Doctor advice - Scoliosis

Hi all,
Our 3 month old baby daughter has developed a sideways curve in her spine which has been suggested may be scoliosis. We have now received an appointment for the x-ray department at the local childrens hospital, and then an appointment with the orthopedic consultant a few days afterwards. The problem is that they have sent us an appointment for a hip ultrasound? Is this correct or should I contact the hospital to get it changed? From what I can gather, an x-ray is the usual scan or possibly in rare cases an MRI? Appointment line is closed this evening but just wanted any opinions before I call in the morning.

Also, we are terribly worried about her, and wanted to see if anyone has any experience of this condition and what we should be expecting in the coming months / years?

Phone the hospital to check its the right thing. NO great hassle to do and it sounds like a mistake here is possible.

As for the future - i don't know much about it it but it does have many degrees of severity and need not impinge on a persons life much at all if it is only mild.

I take it you found the scolisis help group on the net?

Not a doctor but both our girls have developed adolescent scoliocis, Katie has to have an operation next year [55 deg curve] which will see her of the bike for 6 months and 2 ti rods in her back for life, Abigale is using a brace for 20 hours a day to try and stop her getting any worse

Both have had back xrays and also some other kind of image thing. Katie will have to have a MRI scan befor the op

Know exactly how you feel but keep your chin up, most of all enjoy every thing you do together.

Both our girls are just getting on with life and try not to let it affect them, they still bike and board on a regular basis.

Not scoliosis related but, was your daughter a breech birth? The reason I ask is that I was told by our daughter's doctor that the hip ultrasound is routine for all breech babies.

I'd give the orthopedic consultant's office a call and get some confirmation of what they are expecting.

It sounds like mine was/is less severe, but I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was about 11 or so. An operation to insert rods was discussed but my parents weren't too keen so instead I had a lot of physio (or something similar, not so sure). In the short term I had to stop "one-sided" sports such as tennis. In the long term I guess I am lucky that it doesn't cause me too many problems. I get backache fairly easily but as long as I keep my core muscles strong it's okay (although I can't ride a bike with a heavy rucksac). Otherwise, when I do rowing I can only stroke on my left side, and I can only sleep on one side. In some types of clothes it's noticable but I tend to avoid it, and people are often suprised how obvious it is in a swimwear. I'm not so fussed about it though.

Not sure if this helps, but maybe puts your mind a bit at rest.
