[Closed] Do you carry a Leatherman tool?
Pretty bloody handy. Had a Micra on my keychain for a while until someone borrowed it and lost it. Replaced with a Juice S2 which is bigger but a bit more solid. Out on the bike I have a Charge Ti tool with a bit extender and bit kit. Such well built bits of kit. I've looked at Gerber tools but they seem cheap and poorly made by comparison. Then there's SOG and Swisstool / Wenger stuff.
Do you carry one in your ride kit?
Nope
A small pocket knife and a multi tool. There is not much I can't do on the bike with those 2. If I had the stupid split pin brakes I might consider it.
Ah, not as a sole tool.... I've got a Crank Bros 17 too. Combined with the LM it pretty much covers most issues.
Nah, and I don't say 'lets off road' before every ride 😉
Wife bought me one years ago. Left it in my pack, unused for years. First time I came to use it for something unrelated to biking, all the pivots had rusted into one solid mass. Never did use it.
Yep.
I run tubeless and there is pretty much no way of shifting a tubeless tyre valve if you need to put a tube in without pliers - not that I've ever had to.
But since most of my riding is remote natural stuff, better to be prepared than have a seriously long walk.
yep, clone - for pliers/knife mainly
also topeak 2 part alien multi, park chain CT5, plus some specific allen keys, zippies and small roll of insulation tape and latex gloves and mini sealed hand wipes
re rusting - I keep my non waterproof toolbag inside a placcy bag in my rucksack, I also wd40 it every so often
Yep - am a bit of a multitool fanboy.
Have a Leatherman Micra on my keyring, use it pretty much everyday.
I also have a small Gerber in my riding pack, alongside a Crank Bros 17.
I've got a few othersw knocking around that get taken on camping trips etc.
No. I'm in IT, why on earth would i ?
gerber crucial in glovebox of van, Leatherman Juice in Camelbak and Leatherman EOD in 'manbag'.
One of those things that isn't useful unless you're used to having it, then you realise how many silly jobs are mde easier having a knife or pliers or screwdrivers with you.
I don't work in an office though, which may have something to do with it....
Gerber, in my experiance much better made than a leatherman.
Amazon were doing the suspensions for £23 a while back which is robbing them
I have had one for nearly 20 years ever since we did a job for some men with big moustaches who had them as standard issue, no Gerbers for them. 🙂
Mine used to go everywhere with me even on planes, the only time I was ever asked to put it into the hold was on internal flights to Edinburgh. It's also been into bars and clubs all over the world in the past with never any issues. I'm a bit more careful where it goes now though.
I've still got my issue Letherman somewhere, but I bought a Gerber Suspension the other week when they where £18 on Amazon.
Always stays in the bottom of my bergen, or daysack if I'm riding.
Yep! I keep my leatherman Wave in my pack.
The saw gets the most use when out and about for clearing trails in the spring/summer time.
It has got me out of a few pickles and is handy for cutting up salami and what not.
If you have a split pin in you disk brakes and no pliers, have fun trying to change the pads...
The Village People? Maybe you misunderstood the term 'Leather Man'?I have had one for nearly 20 years ever since we did a job for some men with big moustaches who had them as standard issue
Yes, and have done for over ten years. Incredibly useful.

Never had to cut and cables, zip ties, unscrew desktop cases, peel an apple? Or is that all done at the call centre now? :p
I just bought the Gerber suspension the other week too. Damn threads on here will have me bankrupt. It feels a good solid piece of kit though. Looking forward to using it.
I bought a Gerber suspension for £18 following the recent PSA.
Its not a patch on my Leatherman Wave. I'll probably gift it to someone and keep the Leatherman.
But yes Leatherman style tools are very handy
I have a micro on key ring, had it or over 10 years and have used it to help install multi million pound equipment on many occasions. 🙂 causes me no end of hassle when I fly as obviously they are no longer allowed on planes, which I always feel is a bit ironic I I bought it at Hong Kong airport as I was boarding a plane.
Have a charge TTi for my back pack when I ride (and CB 17, seems to be a popular combination). Have always wondered we're I stand on the legal stand point, as its a locking blade. 😕
Those big heavy ones? Nah. If I was carrying one of those I'd have a wire-saw and one of those army fishing/surival kits too and expect to be in the Yukon )
I do have a micro-keyring size one that came in a cracker or something like that. Good for taking pointy stuff out of tyres and stubborn latex- gunked valve nuts etc. Tiny blade has been useful for 'cooking' on bivi trips. One of my least used tools but some kind of blade+pliers tool isn't a bad thing to have on longer trips.
When I managed to jam on a pump to my rear shock (dirty thread/in a rush/stupidity) I was mightly relieved to borrow 2 leathermen from 2 different people in the nearby pub in order to remove it. From being a mocker, I now think it should be a necessity for all pub goers to carry one. Except me, of course.
I have one i always carry at work, and another that lives in my Camelbak (alongside a Top peak bike tool thing...)
I'm a bit of a Leatherman Fanboi... I keep looking for an excuse to buy another, but i can never justify it. One of these days i'll buy a Wave in that Black Oxide finish...
I got a Juice CS4 for xmas and I've been carrying it around every day since. Very useful. Also has the advantage of being legal since the blade is not locking.
I have Topeak 19 which has all the driver bits, tyre and chain tool you should need but I DON'T have pliers or a knife. I'd like to fill that hole but Leatherman (-men?)don't look light and £90 seems a lot:

Maybe a spare pair of workshop pliers might be OK at less weight. Even an old Army Swiss knife...
Nope, it's a Gerber. Much better imo than a leatherman
Yeah, lives in the Camelbak with a few other tools. Actually ordered a different multitool a few years ago and the shop was out of stock so sent me the Leatherman instead (at no extra cost). At first I was a bit miffed but it's actually really good.
Got a Gerber MP400 that I use at work and around the home also got a tiny Gerber keyring tool as well, cannot remember the name but both come in bloody handy.
There like Dremmels you always wonder what you will use one for until you get one then you find yourself fixing all sorts with them.
Used the Gerber the other day to help replace the syphon/flush on my toilet cistern.
Are leather mans lighter that the gerber I've just got?
Just ordered Gerber Suspension (& Bear Grylls) cheap on previous PSA link; cheers.

There's loads of Leatherman tools so likely one will be lighter.
Personally I find Gerber tools a bit weak and heard of numerous incidents where the pliers have failed.
25 year warranty with LMs
Pliers is the only thing on 'em I can imagine needing, so I just carry a small pair of pliers.
Why would I need a file? Or a saw?
APF
Crank Bros Multi 17 and a Leatherman. Occasionally a pocket chainsaw.
Claimed mass:
Gerber Suspension: 9.6oz | 272.1g
Leatherman Juice C2 Weight: 4.3oz | 122g
Leatherman Wave: Weight: 8.5oz | 241g
Yep i had a Leatherman style until someone robbed me of it these days key ring duty is commonly taken up by a Leatherman style.
Also in my multi too arsenal
Leatherman prst II
Leatherman Squirt
Leatherman Wave
Gerber something or other
Ive had the prst II well over 15 years now, its having a well earned retirement and generally hangs about the house for odd jobs where i dont want to get my tool box out.
The Squirt lives in my Commuting bag along with a couple of handy bits and pieces.
The Wave i use in my Camelbak for longer rides.
The Gerber? well the least said about that the better.
No. I'm not in IT, why on earth would I ?
HTH 😀
lol.... my bad.
Still have no idea what you're on about though.
