[#7090532]

So for the first time ever Im heading off to Wales to try a proper trail centre, Bike Park Wales this Sunday.
Giving the bike a thorough fettle and going over and I find a nice crack in the chainstay weld.
Sadly because of its age and that its a chainstay not the main frame Specialized wont warranty it or offer me anything else at a reduced price.

Im investigating getting it welded up properly, so was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or recommendations.

A new bike is out of the question at the moment as Im buying a house in a month, so I've swapped over all the bits from the Spesh onto my Marin Nail trail for now, so BPW is going to be interesting on a hardtail.

That's not an uncommon place for them to go, they had a bit of a rep for it, which is annoying as they are amazingly good frames and have stood the test of time better than most.

Your best bet is probably to buy another one (or two) frames off eBay for spares, checking of course that they haven't got cracks first!

You could get it welded locally but chances are it will go again in the same spot relatively quickly unless you get someone who knows the alloy and can do any necessary post weld heat treatments.

I can't help with the welding, but you're clearly tall... I have a giant trance frame in XL i've had kicking about waiting for me to sell for 3 years now and I keep forgetting/not being bothered.

It's now at the point I just want it out my way, no use to me as I'm now all about 29ers, as you're maybe close (i'm in Bristol, will be at BPW on saturday) you're welcome to it if you can fetch it off me at a convenient time & place. Needs forks with a 240mm+ steerer tho IIRC, long headtube.

Pah, I did Antur on a hardtail*, a C456 admittedly, but still a hardtail. I'm sure it'll be great fun.

*Wi' no more than gravel for breakfast. And brakes?! We didn't have none of them fancy brakes when I were a lad, had to grab the tyre between your teeth to stop etc, etc...

What would you want for it? Drop me a mail to bigyinnAToutlookDOTcom and we can discuss further?

Thats cool, never been so not sure what to expect. I can usually ride most things on FS or HT so im sure it'll be ok, although my arse may be a little less cushioned......

most of the runs are rollable on a HT so you should be ok.
you just need to be careful on enter the dragon, dai hard and 50 shades as they all have some drops on them (not big but noticeable on a HT)
also be wary about going on rim dinger with a HT as it can be very unforgiving

I have a 2002 Rockhopper FSR chainstay - yours for postage if it fits. Pics of the BB pivot and seatstay pivot, and dimensions, and I'll check mine when I get home.

so BPW is going to be interesting on a hardtail.

Done it twice this year...you'll be fine, the blues are great fun and arguably a FS makes them too easy as they're hard pack and well maintained anyway.

The reds were more tricky, no change in steepness but the trail builders just seem to chuck load of rocks/slabs at random points down the runs making line choice critical on a HT and unforgiving if you get it wrong!

Didnt do any blacks on the HT so cant comment on those.

Sounds like good fun then! I'll have a go at black or two im sure.

if its dry (not likely given the current weather) some of the trails at the top can get quite dusty and loose so be careful on some of the turns as you'll be carrying some speed going into them also if its windy (more likely) its quite exposed at the top so be careful...once you're in the trees its fine...but TBH this weekend i think the conditions will be perfect for riding and make sure you try the A470 line.
you'll have an awesome time there OP! 😀

Indeed, I've been talking off group to both and IA has made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

Im hoping to pick up his frame on my way home on Sunday after a day blasting round BPW. Sounds like a perfect day to me! Just need to fit in some beer and we're done!

Thank you both teethgrinder and IA, you are what makes this place special at times.

With that seatpost extension I'm amazed no other welds went earlier

It's very sad to see such a distinguished bike finally bite the dust, but it's possible that it could be rescued with some welding work. IIRC, it was a weak point on those Enduros, my own was retired in 2011 and now hangs from the living room wall.

And IA is most definitely the forum member of the decade for his shout out to BigYinn.

Hora, if you look carefully, you'll see the bottom of seatpost poking out of the seat tube. Unfortunately nature made me 6'5" and that was the biggest size they made the Enduro in. Oddly the Enduro Expert that this frame replaced (warranty replacement) did crack at the top front of the seat tube.
PJM the main frame is almost immaculate and as a bike it has served me very well. My first FS bike and its done some miles around the Isle of Wight I can tell you.
Im considering getting the crack ground out and welded at some point, but for now its going with my Pine Mountain, Zaskar LE and Rocky Ridge in my [s]trophy cabinet[/s] garage eaves.

There were no stays left in 2010 🙁

Your chainstay would weld up fine ,but that's a great result on getting a frame sorted.

Another thumbs up for the good guys .

I've a mate of mine who's the same height as you and his 2003 Enduro died in exactly the same way - a crack around the top front of the seat tube.

He got a warranty replacement identical to your frame. I haven't seen him around in a while so I've no idea if his bike is still going or not.

My previous was a 2003 Enduro expert. When I compared them, the 2004 seat tube had slightly thicker tubing there than the 2003 one.

Nice frame that big yim, sorry bigyinn. If you were to try and sell it make sure you mention the crack to anyone who might buy it.

My Stumpjumper bottom bracket cracked badly (& was unrideable) I had it welded up by an engineering shop, they welded the crack, then put plating over the top, and welded that as additional bracing. I took the frame back to metal & made the plating, so they only charged about £60 for the welding. It was still going strong when I sold it some months later.

My '06 Enduro went in the same place, Spesh sold me a lower chainstay for £80, or at least that's what the bike shop told me, I have trust issues with that particular shop.

I personally wouldn't have it welded, I can't imagine it would represent a huge saving over getting a new one - however it's worth noting that my Enduro was silver like yours, the only stays they had were a sort of pinkish-red and I was told that was the only colour they had or were ever likely to have as they weren't making any new ones - different frame of course.

I have one of these frames hanging up in my garage. You're welcome to the back end, which is a very similar colour (2003 S-works), for postage if you still want to make yours live. I'd like to keep the front end for sentimental value.

Nothing wrong with it, but it has no fitting bolts and the bearings may need doing.

On a hardtail with 140mm forks? F'in excellent! Was keeping up with my mates on their gnarpoons nicely. Thighs only starting to feel better today!

It sure was! Im not planning on selling it and certainly wouldn't consider selling in a cracked condition anyway.

P-Jay, different chainstays to the later enduros. Plus the supply of 2003 / 4 chainstays had dried up a few years ago.
