I've got an old tv that I would like to be able to stream some movies from a NAS drive to. I've got a WDTV play which works really well but it has been discontinued and replaced by a more expensive sibling. It there anything good and cheap on the market, preferably less than £50.

I managed to get a raspberry pi to do this following a few instructions from various websites if you fancy tinkering. That cost £30 for the pi.

Chromecast with the Videostream Plugin for Chrome works excellently.

Xtreamer also good, or WDTV Live

Chromecast is a brilliant little device and will do this just great (plus other stuff like netflix). £30 full price but been on sale for £15 recently

Just got myself a Sumvision Cyclone Micro 4 Media Player. I got a "used" one for £27, looks like new. Happily plays everything I've pointed it at: all sorts of formats, from a USB stick, from a portable hard drive, from my PVR using dnla. Works fine over WiFi but will also take a network wire. I've even got an app on my phone to control it and which will cast content from the phone itself

Worth pointing out that the main output is HDMI, there's also a composite output (3.5mm to red/white/yellow audio plugs) if you have a CRT telly still. I'm plugging mine into an "HD-ready" LCD TV so I can use the HDMI, not tried the composite

Run Plex through my Chromecast (as well as Netflix, etc). Costs peanuts, takes 10secs to set up and just works, but I suppose it depends how you feel about Google.

hmm, I received the Sumvision the other day. COuldn't get it to talk to my wireless network, ran the V1.2 firmware, fixed that after wasting 45 mins pissing about with it. Now there is interference coming from the unit, every 20 seconds or so the screen fuzzes up. Doesn't do that in the NowTV box I have (also side loaded with Plex) so it's going back and I'm going to buy a WDTV instead.
