Carlton Reid (of BikeBiz, Bike Hub, QuickRelease.tv, IPayRoadTax and roadswerenotbuiltforcars fame) has been knocked off his bike, apparently as a deliberate "punishment tap"
"not terribly injured" fortunately.

No need for the quote marks there I'd have thought. Nasty-looking business, hope matey in the Punto gets the book thrown at him.
Wouldn't want to prejudice a jury 😀
Hope the little muppet gets a stern telling off, or whatever the maximum sentence is these days.
(And as for the police who said not to bother pressing charges... 👿 )
Unbelievable! Attempted manslaughter would be a better charge.
Attempted manslaughter = LOL.
"Vehicular Assault" or "Aggravated assault with a motor vehicle" would seem reasonable charges but I don't know if we have anything like that in the UK.
I know that junction, you usually have to wait for about 10 buses coming the other way so bikes are often expected to sit in no mans land waiting for a gap in traffic.
The speed limit along there is 20 also. The guy in the Punto is clearly an ass hat and deserves his next bowel movement to be full of glass.
I've had a few run ins on that junction myself.
20mph limit but drivers don't seem to notice the signs or choose to ignore them. Strange as there's also a series of lights so not quick even if the limit was higher.

Seems to be a common problem in the toon.
I bent Councillor Nigel Todd's ear about it at the Newcastle Bike Festival after he was crowing about Newcastle being a 20 city.
Incidentally that road, John Dobson Street, is supposed to be part of a new North-South route.

|It's depressing that Carlton isn't that optimistic about the driver recieving a properly proportionate penalty, and his expectation is that "hopefully, the guy will get 'careless driving' as a minimum". This is assualt with a deadly weapon, surely? If you smacked someone with a baseball bat, you'd be looking at a fair few months inside, minimum. Why shouldn't this be the case with assault with a motorvehicle?

Because if you're in a car you can basically do whatever the **** you want in this country.
I wrote a massive rant about this but then deleted it because it turns out that for once there's actually something more productive you can do than bitch about it on the internet. There's a debate in parliament a week on Wednesday. Bug your MP about it, ask them to attend:

Re: ignoring signs. The road on the Gateshead side of the Millennium Bridge is a 20 zone AND the section by the bridge is also a Pedestrian Area (no cars - buses, taxis and disabled access only). With no (legal) throughway it should be very quiet.
Today, like every day I pass it, I watched cars from both directions driving straight through the "pedestrian area" at 30mph+ 😡

Basically comes down to what they can prove... Yes it could be a higher offence, but will be difficult to establish intent vs incompetence. So careless/dangerous driving is maybe more likely to get a result.
Careless Driving - he'll probably get 3 points and maybe a £100 fine. It's not much of a deterrent is it?
He *should* never be allowed behind the wheel of a car again.
