Where'd you see it? Which one?

What do you want to know?

They're a NZ brand, they're all very well specced for the money if a little plain in design, and errr... Well, they're bikes!

World famous in New Zealand.

Been around for donkeys years, realatively speaking. My first mountain bike was an Avanti, circa 1986. 🙂

Good brand, design their own bikes, think they've only recently started being distributed over here.

Good list of sponsored riders, especially in tri and ironman.

Anyone remember that Peter Kay advert for John Smiths...?
(He takes his 55 year old Mum to an old people's home).

"The kids are scared of your moustache and I want to put a snooker table in your room... now come on... Avanti!"

If you're in Worcester, or anywhere near it, we sell them in our shop... (link in my profile)

mboy - it was a Giro 3 looked at it in Bspoke Cycles in Peebles. Just wondered how well regarded they are in the roadie world. Thinking of joining the dark side and this looked like a decent bike to start with.

cheers

You could do a lot worse for £1k, put it that way...

Whether or not it would be my first choice for the money, I'm not 100% sure, but if you like the look of it, it fits, then it would certainly be a good intro into road riding. They're quite subtly styled too, which suits the less garish among us.

The styling is good and as you say not too garish as some bikes seem to be.

what would you suggest for a £1k budget?

cheers

Whoah there! Put the lid back on that can of worms... 😉

Seriously though, as you can probably imagine, the £1k price point is MEGA competitive in road bike terms, mainly cos of the cycle to work scheme. It totally depends what your needs and requirements are though... Some people will tell you to buy a Ribble or Planet X Carbon frame with whatever cheapo bits they've got lying about making the build up, some people will tell you it's got to be steel otherwise it's not "real" (for whatever that means). Some will be a whole lot more practical and tell you that these days, most mass manufactured ally frames are very well designed and are both comfy and stiff enough for your average cyclist to both tour on, or even race on should they desire.

Personally, it's about 2 things... Firstly, and you've already dealt with this one, do you like the look of it? Secondly, does it fit? If you're new to road riding, my suggestion would be to look at slightly more upright "sportive" style bikes (such as the Avanti, a Giant Defy, a Specialized Secteur etc.) than race rep style bikes. It's easier to lose some headset spacers than it is to buy a new fork with a longer steerer!

Choice is yours of course, but if you just want to get out and do some miles as an alternative to a bimble on the MTB, the Avanti (or other bikes like it) would be ideal. If you're planning on going and trying to get a CAT 2 license as quickly as possible but you're on a strict £1k budget, you'd be better off spending your money on something racier.

I bought an Avanti Giro in 2005 in Australia for $500AUD and it rides well today. Changed BB, grip tape and brake cables... Brilliant.
