Not particularly interesting question I know. Our Dyson DC05 has died after 16 years faithful service.
What would STW recommend?
It needs to be powerful as we have two cats and its got to be a cylinder rather than an upright. Budget is around £200.
I've seen Dyson DC39 and DC54s new for around £200, are they any good for the money?
Dyson cordless was a game-changer in our household. Reasonably priced on the ebay dyson outlet store
What's up with it? Is this any use to you?

At the moment I don't know, it "just stopped" was the message received. It could just be a cable or a fuse. She might have just pulled the plug too hard and its come out of the socket!
I've fixed it a number of times over the years and it doesnt owe us anything.

MIL has one. Not impressed with the run time TBH. The V6 is ok for her, but more than 15 minutes on a single charge, forget it! The V8s are supposed to be better, but they are way over budget.
Henry.
How about a Henry?
They're cheaper than Dysons, are reliable and have a good sook on them.
Awkward to keep in the cupboard though.
Just as an alternative idea.....
Thought my Dyson was great until a mate gave me a Karcher wet or dry vac thingy.
Dyson went in the bin after one use of this bad boy.

Two out of three. They're great for industrial environments but I can't imagine why anyone would have them at home.

My mate got one - said professional cleaners use em so they must be good. Didn't like to tell him it's just because they have big capacity (and a funny face to cheer up your cleaning days).
He has got a big house though I spose.
for today only, this is in the top ten most interesting things to read on STW.
tis a great time to hide a dull thread.
Thanks for the suggestions folks.
Im not too keen on the henry or the karcher, they look useful for cleaning sick out of the back of taxis, but not around the home!
Its not the plug or the fuse (typical!) so its either the lead or the motor.
Looks like i'll be balls deep and up to the elbow in Dysons this evening!
Just got a Miele bagless pet hair one. Awesome in comparison to the Dyson it replaced, filled up the container twice in one go over what I thought were reasonably clean carpets!
EDIT: Might be a tad over your budget though.
sebo, very much like a Vorwerk, but cheaper.
Sebo X4
I wish they could invent a vacuum cleaner with a bag in it that you can just cleanly discard when full.
Wouldn't it be simpler just to Sudocreme the cats?
The Pinkster - MemberWouldn't it be simpler just to Sudocreme the cats?
Yeah but, no but, yeah but, no but. NO. It would render the house like something from a coastal oil spill, but in white.
Another vote for the sebo x4, it just works properly.
Henry.
a) it works
b) its got a smiley face that follows you around as you hoover
c) what more could you want than a and b?
I'm third-ing the Henry suggestion.
We got one after faffing around (and losing money) on a couple of other machines, and we are very glad we did.
Plus, it has a smiley face.
what more could you want than a and b?
A vacuum cleaner with more suction than a henry?
sebo x4,
Nah, the Sebo BS36 is far superior. ours is about ten years old and is still excellent.
We used the x4 at some work units and while lighter, they are just not built as well.
In true STW fashion you lay down a number of criteria and people suggest items that don't fit that criteria. I hate upright cleaners. They're a complete ballache on the stairs, they're no use when trying to hoover the car out either.
I shall carry investigative shenanigans tonight.
Have to +x the Dyson Cordless (we have a v6 total clean), run time is relatively short - but haven't run it down yet, dirt container is small and fiddly to empty (again meant to be improved on the v8) but it's always ready to go and the Total Clean has all the bits we need.
We also have a Sebo K something or other and a Henry (which I borrowed from my office for the duration of building work) and the Dyson can't be beaten in terms of its covenience.
Nah, the Sebo BS36 is far superior
But also far more expensive.
They're a complete ballache on the stairs,
Sebo comes with an additional long hose and rotating brush head so stairs can be vacuumed from the bottom.

Sadly the latest professional ones are faceless 🙁
We've got one, it's reliable, tough and transfers dust and dirty from floors into a bag.
It’s a bit loud, but I’m yet to discover a vacuum cleaner that cannot be noticed when it’s on.
Henry every time, if you can't vacuum your carpets right with one of them then god knows what kind of mess you're making.
I thought all vacuum cleaners were called Henry... what colour is Dyson??
Red trousers with a pink shirt.
My dyson broke so i followed the youtube vids to check wire, motor etc. 1 hour and a bit of faffing, cleaned all filters, tightened connections, works as new now. Mine was due to people pulling the wire out too farfrom body so had worked loose.
A vacuum cleaner with more suction than a henry?
What are you trying to hover up? Gravel?
I would, in the great tradition of recommending what you have - recommend a Vax.
I bought one a while ago (Vax Air - quite light and exceptional suction - with a very long tube to do the stairs)
They come with a 6 year warranty which I have used a couple of times successfully (ours gets a battering with pets and a Victorian house - plenty of big carpets to clean)
There are also many offers on Vax stuff, not least through their website - email offers are keen!
I really like Henry (and bought one), buy NB It's a bit of an awkward design as it trips over quite a lot and requires strong hands etc to manipulate the cord rewind and drag it around over rug edges etc.
OTOH it's very powerful in terms of airflow, reliable, has large bags and can be bought cheap (check Makro).
We have a Henry...well a Harry actually, the green one for pets. Far more powerful than our previous Dyson...which I hated. Then we have a cordless for a quick run around.
Would definitely recommend a Henry or Harry.
If you have carpet then the only way to clean it properly is with a rotating beating head - upright or more expensive cylinder with powered head.
If you are sensitive to dust then proper fleece type bagged with extra filters that can be replaced.
Sebo X series worth a look as the way the pipe/wand works its like a cylinder
type for quick access , and the filter/bag system makes sure you never see dust.
Major surgery completed. Patient doing well.
Turned out to be a carbon brush problem in the motor.
Sorted for now. I suspect it may return, but I've bought myself some time at least.
Still can't use it as my son decided to wash the filter, but, as you've probably guessed, the non washable one!
£5.26 on ebay for all 3. Probably needed replacing, so no loss.

Ironically, that's one of the situations where you'd be better off with a Henry.
Unless they've changed since I last used one (which admittedly was 20 years ago so it's entirely possible), they're large capacity, indestructible, and will vac up any old detritus you care to throw at it. However, their actual suction power is sorely lacking compared to pretty much everything else I've ever used.

They must have changed over the years as mine is often too powerful on the high setting....I have had to refit a badly fitted carpet because of it. Was the bagless trend not to up the wattage to rediculous levels not to just get a comparable amount of suction as a decent bagged vacuum such as a Henry.
Then I sit corrected.
If she prefers pink then get a Hetty instead of a Henry 😉
They're a complete ballache on the stairs
You know you're going balls deep in your Dyson and getting a ballache on the stairs? Maybe a new vacuum cleaner isn't actually what you need...
Shark! It's awesome!
I've used a lot of different cleaners when in customers homes and the biggest pile of shit is a Dyson.
We have a Sebo a well thought out machine with a 12m cable, it's a pleasure to use, can't fault it.
Henry here too, he's become a part of the family.
Sucks up whatever you throw at him and never complains.
Sebo. End.
Get the Dyson repaired?
We have a DC50. Works well. But since getting a Dyson hand held I've rarely used the DC50. The hand held is ideal for a quick vacuum or even a couple of rooms and the stairs. And it's rare that I'd venture to do more than that in one go with either.
Another vote for SEBO.
Miele cat & dog ..
Missus is a mobile hairdresser..with a 50/50 split of home visits & clients visiting ..
17 years of faultless service ..it would blow Henry away ..
This thread sucks.
Anyway, you can have mine, it's just gathering dust here.
Miele. Cheaper, quieter, more effective and more reliable than the Dyson it replaced.
Ah, I love a good old vacuum thread.
I was out shopping for a small vacuum to leave in one of our holiday cottages the other day. In Currys on one side of me were an array of Dysons looking like rejects from the Blake's 7 prop department - and then I turned slightly and a little pink lady with a lovely smile caught my eye. Hetty from Chard. Anyways I scooped her up and she's now living fritzel style under our stairs.
Wouldn't give house room to the offspring of creepy brexit clagnut Dyson.
