Bontrager XR4 TLR 26" x 2.2 – How do you rate them?

I'm thinking of investing hard earned cash in a set of Bontrager XR4 26" x2.2 tyres but would welcome advice on whether to go for the 120TPI (foldable/tubeless ready) version or the 60TPI (wire) version. Huge difference in price, so is the extra justifiable given I wont be running them tubeless? Also, would it be a good tyre to use on the Sussex South Downs? Need a tyre for Spring to Autumn that will climb well and be tough enough to cope with varied conditions.

Very good tyre i am running the TLR's tubeless using just gaffa tape to seal the spoke holes and some stans juice , i would say they are every bit as grippy as Maxxis High Roller's 2.35 but roll much better . If you dont swap tyres to often go tubeless with them as when my last tyres came off i had six thorns in it and setting them up only takes 15 mins .

A number of people I've spoken too have suggested the Maxxis High Roller but if the XR4 ticks all the same boxes, grips just as well and has less rolling resistance, than the XR4 seems a better option for me. Given your comment about the thorns I can see the tubless option makes sense. Have you been using your TLR's for long and if so, has the tread worn out quickly or are you happy with the way they have stood up to use? Durometer rating for the XR4 TLR 120tpi tyre? There's nothing showing up on Bontrager's website but I'm assuming it should be a least 60a, although higher a rating of 70a would be a bonus.

Have had them on for a couple of weeks now so done maybe 60-70 miles off road and last sunday i did 51 miles on the road with no sign of wear at all but i recon they are duel compound as the side knobs seen quite soft . oh by the way they are big

Rode today on a pair of new XR4's. Can't believe how fast they are and how well they coped with mud along the way. Fitted them with a tube for the time being and to my suprise I found it easy to get the tyres on the rims. Didn't even need to use tyre levers. Too early to say but initial impression is that these tyres will be perfect for the South Downs.

I have em on one bike-Team issue 2.2 and High rollers 2.35 on't other. They appear near enough the same width, poss the Bonty's a tad wider.Had a good ride yesterday in mixed conditions, roll well, much better than high rollers and shed mud very well, traction was good too in the gloop. Running them tubeless and used Bonty juice for the first time-and possibly last….Stans seems to seal an stay up much better. Overall though, reckon these are good for mixed surface/conditions….

hi guys just found this thread could any one give me a bit of advice on what size xr4's to get to fit to 819 rims to go on a p7 hardtail
i've heard that they come up big
