How %^&*ing much?

My car is cheaper and worth 5 times more and when used incorrectly quite capable of killing yet I am getting comparable insurance quotes.

Who with, and how much?

The issue is how often they are stolen, not the damage they do.

With the home insurance we have I can insure up to five bikes to the total value £10,000.
However it does slightly more than double the quote for the combined buildings and contents insurance compared to not insuring the bikes.
Still considerably *cheaper than a specialist bike insurance quote -

* the bikes and house insurance cost is less than the quote for just insuring the bikes

Direct line want an additional £400 for My Spitfire, a Dartmoor hardtail and a Planet X roadie.

I get that its more probable that there is a payout for stolen bikes than for a fatal road accident but given the fact one is a max of £6500 and the other could be a payout of millions then the numbers still seem at odds.

I think it depends if you live in an area where there's been lots of reported bike thefts. Obviously low in my area as my buildings and contents insurance, including all my bikes, is only £190 a year.

As far a personal liability is concerned, you may well be covered under your houshold insurance already-many policies include this as standard ( but not all....)

It is worth checking as this article suggests:
https://www.theguardian.com/money/2010/jul/02/bike-insurance-covered
The important part may be how seriously you use your bike

If you are a total amateur, you are likely to be protected; but if you are someone who regularly enjoys time-trialing, road racing or circuit racing it's likely that cover will be invalid unless you have added a racing extension.

Just renewed with AA plus. £7500 for bikes in outbuildings. Underwritten by AXA who were very good when I had to claim. Good price too.

Another vote for Pedalcover. Thankfully not had to claim yet but very helpful and a personal service.

We went with John Lewis Specialist cover - total bill is £400ish for a year, including £20k away from home, 7 bikes of significant value, 2 canoes and three kayaks, thefts from sheds, some landlords cover, new for old on all items, buildings cover etc etc...

Like insurance with brass knobs on.

We reduced by £120, by not going full accidental cover.

Recently switched from Direct Line to Pedalcover, mainly due to the cost of insuring the bikes. Actually I couldn't find any way of getting cover for expensive bikes away from the home with Direct Line. Even using their "plus" policy (which was working out at just over a grand a year) it looked as though it was only covering bikes away from the home to a limit of £1K. With Pedalcover I've got what looks like fantastic cover for the bikes for a fraction of the price.

Plus, Charles couldn't have been more helpful and both times that I rang I was through to a person almost immediately. As opposed to having to be told endlessly how important my call was to Direct Line while I sat and waited. Obviously not important enough to actually employ sufficient people to answer it in a reasonable time then.

I forget who my better half insured us with for this year, but whoever it is, the payout limit is £500 on a bike for home or away.

Now when I bought the Wazoo, I thought no problem, RRP is £500.

But recently I totalled up all the upgrades I've bought since Feb and they cost more than the bike! 😯

Admittedly, if the bike was stolen while I was out, I would only have one set of wheels with me... But still.

Pedalcover for me, real people on the end of the phone straight away and cover to suit my requirements not what they think will be best.
