Soon, I'll be needing a big (big'ish) 29er tyre - I'm thinking 2.5 kinda size, but only seem to be finding 2.4's (and 2.4's that appear be be on the slim side of 2.4 at that). Wide 2.4's are fine, I'm not stuck on the numbers.
😉
What's out there please?
WTB look to have done something in the past, but maybe not now ...
Bonti 29-4's are very wide
see www.mtbtires.com for all your tyre width needs.
as above racing ralph measures up at 2.4.
2.4 ardent is supposedly smaller
interbike photos show 2.5 maxxis minions (size tbd)
HTH 🙂
WTB do/did a weirwolf LT 2.55, it was huge...
wtb also made the dissent - 29er downhill tyre
Racing Ralf 2.4
The Dissent is rather heavy.
The Dissent is rather heavy.
a pair of racing ralphs each heavy!! 😯
But with a lot more grip!
It really depends on what you plan to do with them. Ardent and Ralph's come in 2.4s, Conti have announced Mountain Kng 2 and Rubber Queens in big sizes (and the new tyres are supposed to be to size unlike previous efforts), Schwalbe Hans Dampfs look like they'll be big too.
Bontrager FR3s in 2.35 are pretty chunky.
I have a pair of WTB 29er 2.55 weirwolfs, they measured 71mm on a Halo 32mmm rim, now on 47mm Kris Holm rims they are approx 83mm, but they are now running at 25 PSI instead of 30-35 PSI and could easily go lower with little risk of rim damage/ pinch flats, not draggy but now loads more grip, wider rims make more differance than the tyres width as long as the tyre width keeps up with the rim width or you will get rim contact which = expense 🙂
I have a pair of WTB 29er 2.55 weirwolfs, they measured 71mm
ORLY?
Hang on...back in a tick.
Just double checked my measurements (Id made a note, but they were in the shed).
RR2.4 @ 35mm rim = 61mm wide
RR2.4 @ 20mm rim = 60mm
WTB 2.55 @ 35mm rim = 60mm
Ignitor 2.1 = 52mm
wtb dissent is the biggest at the moment but is a chunky monkey. Having said that as its a 1.5 ply with all sorts of trickery in it you can run it at 8 psi with no issues and it's ace! on a 42 mm rim at 8 psi it's 72mm knob to knob at higher pressure it's bit bigger
cheap deal on them at unicycle dot com at the moment as well which is nice
bonty FR3 is also rather wide but looks anorexic next to a dissent
I absolutely love my 29er 2.4 racing ralph... great tyre
2.35 nobby nics also come in at a very decent size on a wide rim as well
cheap deal on them at unicycle dot com at the moment as well which is nice
Can't see any?
me neither.
But I like the look of that 42mm kris holm 29er rim for £56. Esp when Gordos cost twice as much and weigh only 80g less.
Kenda Nevegal 2.2 comes up pretty big.
are these internal or external rim widths you are quoting?
What widths and make rims are people using with 2.4" and upwards tyres?
Looking for some decent but cheap rims to build some wheels with (and then try my first wheel build - gulp)
External rim widths, the dissents have gone, but 15 quid for some stouts is very good. Andyl L if you want some cheap wide rims look at the nimbus dominators, or kris holm freeride rims. The dominators are tops as they have a mahoosive bead hook so it prevemts the tyre rolling of the rim even at very low pressures.
updated. Just been faffing swapping my wheels around and moving Noodle wheel to another bike.
Got RR 2.4s on both. Ones on an Sun Equalizer which I think is 19.5mm inner bead width, the other is on the 35mm wide Salsa Gordo.
56.4mm carcass width on the EQ27

a bit wider at the nobbles

[/img]
On the Gordo its 60mm for nobble and carcass, showing that the narrow rim brings the nobbles round to the edge of the profile more than that wider one.

Looked up the Dominator: http://www.unicycle.uk.com/rim29nimbusdominator2.html
903g 😯
I don't mean that wide and heavy. Looking for something 20-24mm and around 500g. So far the Halo 29R is looking the best value for money.
I've got a Velocity P35 on the front of my jones - 35mm wide - it's the one in the pics here

bontrager rims are good value for money. you will need to speak to a dealer as they don't list them on the website.
mavic 719s are also nice. build up sweet too.
@ andyl nowt wrong with a bit of girth young man 😀
