So I’m experimenting with windows (8.1, and will move to 10 on release) pondering moving from a mac:

A bit stuck on backups though – what’s good for automated backups?

I want a proper backup solution, so:

Everything. I want to be able to restore a dead system easily.

Automatic. It’s not a proper backup if it’s not automatic.

Versioned, I don’t want bad files to overwrite good ones, I want to be able to grab old versions of files if needs be.

Ideally to a network share, but a locally attached disk would do in a pinch.
Basically I want time machine but for windows. What’s out there?

I know about file histories, but it’s not everything. I know I can image the entire system, but it’s neither automatic or versioned. I guess I need to go 3rd party? Or just work with histories and occasionally image?

I’ve tried to pre-empt replies along the lines of “i copy my files to a usb stick and that’s my backup”* or “I put my important files in dropbox, that’s my backup”* etc – I want all of the above, it’s not unreasonable IMO.

    *no it’s not
