    Tall headtube – tick
    Disc mounts – tick
    Carbon – tick
    Decent price – tick

    Absolutely stupid name – tick
    crap graphics – tick
Badge and brand whoring Sports Direct wannabe company behind them – tick

So in light of the above – who else makes a carbon ‘Gnarmac’ frameset for decent money <£1000 that wont explode and kill baby robins or that looks like it has graphics designed on an episode of The Apprentice?

If you value any kind of warranty or customer care, it seems so.
If you’re happy with a nice handling, reasonably priced HT and happy to take a risk on not needing the aforementioned customer service, go ahead.
Fwiw, as you have asked, there are many alternatives out there now that have an ounce if care, at the same price….

Only with a punt when there’s at least 50% off, ideally more. IMO these days.

i keep saying this every time an on one bashing thread appears, but i’ve had a 456 (zero issues) a titus el guapo (frame replaced under warrenty, 2 day turn around, from 1st contact) and a tomac montezuma (zero issues) from them… and each and every time i’ve contacted them they’ve been an absolute pleasure to deal with… it may help that i’m only round the corner from them i guess…

    ah well… good luck OP

    Chinese!
If you’re willing to build one up: http://www.flyxii.com/en/products/flx-fr-602.html

    If not: http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/ribble-cr3-winter-training-special-edition/#pid=35202

I’ve got a 602 and it’s been great on the road, not taken it off road yet but there’s plenty of clearance for some big tyres.

    ^ I’ve seen that 602 on a few Chinese places – I’ve also found the On-One but without garish graphics – not sure yet if the manufacturer sells direct;

I got one when they were on offer at £500 for the frameset, really happy with mine. Yeh hate the name, the graphics are awful, but as it has frame bags on most of the time so what. That and some black electrical tape in strategic spots such as inside fork legs etc 🙂
Odd that their approach, or lack of, to warranty is one of the factors that puts you off, but your happy to take a punt on a Chinese frame!

That’s the point isn’t it though. You might as well pay as little as possible as warranty and customer service rival faceless corporation based thousands of miles away. You’ll also get one in raw cabin not one with dubious application of crayons.

    and I wont be supporting the Sports Direct of the cycling world trading on brands history;

[/quote]“VINER was founded in 1947 in Pistoia, a small town approx 30 miles northwest from Florence, by Mr. Viviano Nerozzi. The brand name is just a contraction of his first and second name VI-NER. During those early years they manufacture city bikes and by the 1950s, VINER introduced its first road racing bikes.
VINER began sponsoring some amateur cycling teams and the brand popularity grew accordingly. The 1960s were the boom years for VINER as they become sponsors for Furzi-FT pro team and several pro cyclists like Conti and Polidori used VINER bikes during Giro d’Italia. The company was able to successfully export their bikes, to both Europe, U.S. and Australia.
In 1978 VINER bikes were used by the Dutch winners of the 100 km Chrono at the World Championship. The company continued to increase its business volume in the 1980s as they begin to manufacture mountain bikes as well. In the 1990s VINER was technical sponsor for pro-teams like Mapei, Navigare and Scrigno.
In 1994 Viviano Nerozzi, at age 69, passes away. The company continues without interruption, managed by Cesare Baldi and the Nerozziis family.
Then, in 2007 Viviano Nerozzi’s successor, Cesare Baldi, passes away at age 55. Despite this loss, the company continued to be very active and managed by the family…

    until 2013.

Now its nothing more than a devalued catalogue company being whored out by PlanetX / On-One. See also Tomac, Holdsworth etc etc.
I’d rather buy at source and run it raw/decal less.

Well I have a BBB in briiiiight Orange. Apart from the awful cartoony stickers I think it’s fantastic. Comfortable all day long and couldn’t at the time find anything that compares for the money.

As for customer service, I can’t really fault them. I bought the wrong size even after a test ride and after a week and multiple rides they swapped the frame for me including rebuild for nothing.

Yes they can be flaky and I think they used to be a bit poor on support (and might still be a little bit) but I’ve enjoyed shopping there and will continue to do so. That said, if I can order one from China in another colour I would be tempted even now.

As for the Sports Direct comparison, that’s frankly rubbish. I would guess PX pay their staff a reasonable wage and their workshop conditions look rather pleasant to me, the staff I’ve spoken to at both shops and their head office/workshop seem pretty happy. A better comparison would be Richer Sounds who also buy up old names, Cambridge Audio etc. and cycle through them. Doesn’t sound as good bashing them that way though, eh?

Maybe people think I’m a tool for riding my uncool BBB in my Planet X gear but I’m happy and will carry on doing so.

I love mine too – also in bright orange. Bought during one of their discount offers, it was great value and makes a great do-it-all bike.

Oh, and I quite like the graphics

Where am I talking about working conditions? – its the hoovering up of brand names with history and trading off the back of them (see SD and Karrimor etc) as well as the FU attitude to their crap QC (London road frames).

Having now found the manufacturer I’d rather go direct to China and cut out the colour blind primary school graphics designer..

Sorry. To me, especially recently, a comparison to Sports Direct hints at a lot more. My mistake.

I hope you enjoy your frame as much as I like mine. It’s a real peach. I think it’s a wonderful example of not a gravel bike/adventure bike or any other label. It’s just a great bike that does so much so well. The rest of my bikes have taken a back seat since it arrived.

If it helps this is the list of frame sellers that I have come across with good reviews:
    http://www.flyxii.com
    http://www.workswellbikes.com
    http://www.dengfubikes.com
    http://www.hongfu-bikes.com
    http://www.velobuildmall.com
    http://www.carbonda.com
    http://www.miraclebikes.com
    http://www.icanbikes.com

And after my London Road debacle I would never purchase anything from PX again.

nickb and cupotea – have you got the mk1 or mk2 and what mudguards have you got on and were they easy / a pain to fit.
I’ve been looking at one as a replacement commuter for an old Boardman CX. At 6’5″ I reckon I could squeeze on an XL.

I would only ever ride a frame that I’ve built myself. Cut out the marketing. The middleman. The orange graphics designer. The questionable commercial strategies. The boiling kittens alive to make the glue that holds the carbon fibre together that no-one has yet mentioned.

Which are the super ethical bike companies with transparent production chains and environmentally-friendly, sustainable production processes?

that, and Dave Loughram the founder specifically citing Sports Direct as a model he wanted to emulate in a Rouleur interview. Probably figured Rouleur readers didn’t shop at SD or PX so it was a safe disclosure (and oddly links to the article from Google etc now give an error message…)

Which are the super ethical bike companies with transparent production chains and environmentally-friendly, sustainable production processes

dunno, but I CAN name a company with a laughable attitude to QC, poor customer service and a marketing strategy that treats it’s customers with contempt as if they’re too stupid to recognise the exact same frame sold with three different brand names on it.

People are free to make choices based on their perception of a business and the way it conducts itself as well as the quality of their product. Some people (not me) dislike Specialized for their aggressive enforcement of IP rights. I will never buy or own a Trek product because they threw Greg Lemond under a bus in order to appease Lance Armstrong. Luckily there are enough brands out there to keep us all happy. I don’t think you or anyone else who likes their PX is an idiot, just someone with a different experience and a different opinion to me.

My experience of them consisted of them refusing to do a wheel upgrade I offered to pay for as they had no stock, then offering it as an option three days later( liars) Then sending me the wrong mech hanger twice ( apparently I should have compared the one on their site that was labeled ” dirty disco mech hanger” with my own snapped one,so my fault) Sports Direct? Dave Hinde more like. I can’t compare that to other bikes I have bought from them as I wasn’t daft enough to do it again. And that owner seems a fud in the above link. CRC or Canyon( who I bought from this year without any issues)
