I have just seen on the classifieds someone selling a conversion kit for air to coil on pikes.

Has anybody else done this to forks and if so how? It is easy etc?

I have set of Pikes 454 AirU Turn and was looking at changing them for some coils forks but if I can convert them great.

    Any words of wisdom?

Im refurbishing a set of pikes and as far as i can work out you can convert air u-turn to coil u-turn, i could be wrong. It looks easy enough to convert but it depends how mechanically minded you are. Having just stripped down some pikes i can assure you its messy!!!

I’ve got a medium Pike U-turn spring you can have for cheap if you need it. Not sure how easy the conversion is sorry.

It is as simple as removing the air spring tube and replacing is with the coil. You’ll need to take off the Uturn adjustor, remove the 5mm foot-bolts then use the correct socket to remove the air tube. (let all the air out first. IIRC, you’ll need to remove a circlip from the bottom of the stanchion on the spring side, but if you keep the whole lot horizontal as you do it you shouldn’t loose any oil, and it is dead easy to top up.

    dead simple.
Lowers off first and drain oil
unbolt the spring side at the top and drain oil
remove circlip off the bottom of the stancion
    remove air sping assembly
put in spring assembly fill up oil (tighten up bolt top)
    lowers back on
    oil in lowers

    DONE

    Thanks guys. Sounds doable.

    Will the UTurn still work?

And do you keep the air valves on?

Can it be converted back if necessary?

    Cheers

u turn is on the spring so yes
no to the air valves as you are changing a whole assembly.
Take the fork apart – dead simple inside

Can it be converted back if necessary?

Somebody over on MTBR told me that can’t because the spring scratches the inside of the stanchion meaning it doesn’t seal properly. If you already have the air gubbins then you’ve nothing to lose by trying it though!
