Be there at the moment, don't miss it. Its amazing when the head starts to appear and then out they pop! First took about 8hrs from call to hospital, second was fast 2hrs from making the call to the hospital! Also its hard sometimes to distinguish real contractions from what you think are Brackston Hicks.....

and whatever you do, stay at her head end and don't look down. Seriously!
Like watching your favourite pub go up in flames, so I heard (probably on here).

I'll be within an hour. Otherwise I'll have to take the missus to work (and everywhere with me).
I think she will be more than happy with the trade off of not having me there if she really did give birth within the hour. Our friend had a 36hr painful labour last year and mrshora is dreading that!
mrshora isnt worried about being alone- she actually thinks it'll be a marathon

Hora - in the delivery suite you want to get hold of the gas and air mix. Its laughing gas FFS - you might as well get a few laughs out of it all
Posted 2 years ago # -
My first child arrived 15 minutes after getting to hospital.
All labours are so different that it is hardly worth the risk.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Of course you should go into the labour room with her. She's made you life hell for the last 5 months or so and you'll not get another opportunity to laugh like crazy on the inside while presenting a worried and thoughful exterior.
"Yes, I was there at the birth of my child, it was a terribly distressing experience watching my status within the family drop to the same level as a pair of wellies."

spoke to someone at the weekend who dropped within 3 mins of the first twinge...
Trying really hard here to avoid fanny jokes...

I'm riding tomorrow. She can sodding cross her legs!
Posted 2 years ago # -
You silly sod. What if something happens to you?
Your missus and your baby need you more than you need a pushbike ride.

Just back from an ante-natal class/meet the health visitor thing, shortest she has know is a few minutes, longest was a week (yes she was asked, a week of proper labour 'cos they wanted/insisted on a natural birth, apparently physically and mentally still in bits unsurprisingly) so take your chances.
6 weeks and 3 days until my other half is due, planning on staying basically within an hour tops (time to get to her side and ready to go) but who knows when and what will happen?Posted 2 years ago # -
This is all too soon.
I still haven't got my head around Hora being some poor wretches 'Dad'.
Posted 2 years ago # -
'arry, that can happen anytime. I managed to make it to work this morning without being sideswipped by a bus etc.
wwaswas- I haven't. I am still in shock. The good thing is mrshora is supremely fit so the little fella has a fighting chance that he wont be a podgy-sloth like his old man

On reflection I was a bit harsh in the above post but I won't edit it.
Do whatever you want.
I went on a ride the day before my lad was born. But I didn't stray more than 2 miles and spent most of the time sat on a wall thinking about what was about to happen.
It may be the last chance for while that you get some thinking time but whatever you do don't injure yourself because you are going to be very very busy.
Good luck.

+1. Thats my thinking. I need to do. I'm stressed out and I'm not being a help. I avoided riding some steps on Sat that the others did purely as I know its not the right time to be sat there with one arm in plaster.

My son's 14 and my daughter 8.
I still haven't really come to terms with the whole 'being a dad' thing yet - I still just feel like me (but with less hair and permanent sleep deprivation).
I managed to wait until my daughter was 3 months old before I fell off my bike and broke my hip, I'm sure my wife appreciated me waiting and also that I was in a hospital relatively close to home.

From first twinge and feeling of oh sh*t it's happening our first arrived within 4 hours and second within 5 hours.
I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else when it all kicked off, it's scary and exciting all in one and not something you'll experience too many times in the future.
It could all be an anti climax and not happen for a few more days of course but to echo other comments it's not really worth the risk is it?

Ha, the giving birth thing is mad.
With the first my misses was 10 days late so taken in to be induced... I was sent home at 22.00 & told it wouldn't be that night ... a couple of stellas & a kebab & a bit of tv, went to bed about 01.00 ... 02.00 I get a call saying come in but no rush, hahahaha, like I wouldnt rush, anyway I got to the hospital very quickly to be rushed upstairs & told to hurry as the baby was being born. I looked down as I passed ... it took ages to get over the trauma of that, I couldnt look her in the ahem "eye" for months after & he was born at 02.20.The second was close to millies description, "no dear I am sure you are fine, only a couple of contractions so far but as we are quiet we will just check you over.....GET HER INTO THE DELIVERY ROOM NOW!" I think that was about 30 mins from arriving at the hospital to born & about 2 hours from first contraction...
My advice is dont go too far away.

you'll have loads of time to go riding when the baby arrives. I went away and raced DH the weekends after each of mine were born.
I'd just go for a local play in the woods type ride, and stick a change of clothes (for yourself) in the car incase you need to leave in a hurry.

I'll see what the missus' wants me to do. This is her time/moment on stage.

Is it possible that the date we were given could be slightly out? (11th March was given to us as an estimate at the 12th week scan).
Her bump is still sitting very high (right up in fact) and she doesnt feel anywhere near.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Well this is all very reassuring I must say...
Currently working in Edinburgh while pregnant wifey is two-and-a-half hours away in Northumberland...
Posted 2 years ago # -
Hora - the date is a guess - within a week or more either way. Many countries they only give you an approximate date - end of march or whatever
Posted 2 years ago # -
Dude don't be a plank, if something happens to you and you miss the birth you will regret it.
Posted 2 years ago # -
The waiting is killing me. I can't concentrate at work. She'll have to come with me with her bags in the boot. Worsecase the nipper will be born in Hudds (like me)
Pcb I rode down 4 sets of stairs in Castlefield/Manchester with no helmet on the way back from lunch today. I would have seen it as childish before but I'm frustrated!

DO NOT GO TO THE FEET END!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT GO TO THE FEET END!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT GO TO THE FEET END!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT GO TO THE FEET END!!!!!!!!!
enjoy your new family

I've erm, been 'naughty'...I've had two rides since I last posted
Posted 2 years ago # -
Don't forget the nitrous cylinder at the birth. Makes it all much more entertaining
Posted 2 years ago # -
Never mind the 'stay at the head end' crap! You need to see your child being born , it's the most amazing thing you will ever see.
Of course you'll wonder if you'll ever touch the sides again but there's exercises for that.
I'd definately ask the missus what she thinks and be led by her thinking.
Mrs carlos went into labour 5 weeks early , her waters broke just as I walked through the door from work at lunchtime (actually the baby had kicked his hindwaters through) our son was born at 6.30pm the next day but she didn't go into labour when the waters went ,contractions didn't start until 14 hours before he was born.
Most of all enjoy being a dad , and be there for your wife!
Posted 2 years ago # -
She is (actually) more bothered about me building a wadrobe than being in the room
Posted 2 years ago # -
I would try to be in a different country.
Posted 2 years ago # -
all labours are different - two kids, wife has spent a TOTAL of 128 mins in labour.
enjoy your ride dude
Posted 2 years ago # -
Can I just say thank you guys.
