You know those people who stop you in the street when you’re walking through town?

You’re like one of them, you are.

    “Well bloody sod yer then”

I was trying to get a serious answer and once again it descends into the usual drivel and talk of Mitch’s nether garments, or the lack of them.

How old are you? – 40
How much would you spend on a bike? – As much as I could afford. If I had the money I could easily spend 6k+ but I’m materialistic when it comes to bikes.
How much would you spend on a jacket? £150 – Endura Stealth
How much would you spend on a set of front lights? Lumin Liberator Mk2 – £165 and still going strong.

I think Hora needs an extra question:

How much would you spend on a pair of cowboy boots? Just to lend this exercise some perspective

Wierd that. On some things I’d go ‘mental’ whereas on something that gets lots of wet gritstone slop, stones banged up etc etc I really don’t see the point in spending anything close to ‘silly’.

Are we talking about cowboy boots now?

Assuming you are talking about bikes, and “gritstone slop” isn’t some ghastly euphemism, I agree.

I got my main bike in 2005 for £1300 and will keep it going until I kill the frame. Everything on it has been swapped out as it wears or breaks. A £3k bike wouldn’t make me a better rider. In fact the best upgrade I ever had was spending £80 on a skills day.

My SS is made of bits. The CX was a 40th present from the wife and the road bike was on Ride-2-Work.

My only bike currently has a 12yr old XTR rear mech and a mkI saint driveside chainset with a mkII XT non-driveside arm, 6yr old Chris King headset and a bashed up Hope wheelset.

If I was buying a roadbike it’d be totally different though.

I’m 41, and this is where I’d probably start to cop myself on and draw the line- so what I would spend if I had the money:

    Bike £2500
    Jacket £200
    Lights £200

I’ve never actually spent that much on any of these things though, and probably never will!

Just anecdotally I’d say the amount of money people spank on bikes tends to be inversely proportional to how much they actually ride them.

I probably don’t even need to mention Llandegla car park as the obvious example of this. The people I generally see out all the time on my local East Lancs trails – usually on very ‘lived-in’ looking hardtails) – being the opposite end of the spectrum

    Just turned 40!
The only complete bike I have ever was my ss, 2nd hand for £300..
Jacket – £20 (nice ones have been pressies!)
lights – £90 for the bars (got my helmet light on a long term loan from a mate!)

Does this make me a middle aged cheapskate 😳

How old are you? thirty eighteen
How much would you spend on a bike? Don’t, they are built from bits – so c£250 for the SS (my only bike BTW)
How much would you spend on a jacket? £80 or less
How much would you spend on a set of front lights? £50 from Ebay.

But, I’m a tight Yorkshireman whose teenage kids are bleeding him dry.
