• The reason streetlights remain on overnight is that they use the power generated by the big base power stations that take hours or days to come on-line so can’t be turned off overnight. There’s other users of course that similarly can’t turn on/off over short timescales. I don’t know just how much is soaked up this way but it’s there to be div…

Had mine on for two weeks. Guess only below 7 this last week but liking the squidgy ride comfort on the a and B roads to work. Second year of Pirelli winters. Changing them is a bit of a faff. Added bonus is getting a second use out of them going to the alps for a week.

  • Sounds like the turbo was blown.

  • @tallmartin

I went from a 1.6 Honda Civic diesel estate and tried a gtd estate.
It was fine, but no faster than the civic,

That wasn’t a healthy GTD you tried. From Autocar re 1.6d civic

While it’s not particularly quick – it dispatches the 0-62mph dash in a leisurely 10.5 seconds

The GTD does that in about 7.

  • Saint-Vincent – seems to have a decent amount of bars/shops but no direct skiing so was pretty cheap accommodation.

I spent some time looking at accommodation all along the valley from there back up towards courmayeur with key things being parking, a decent kitchen and the right number of rooms and space for teenage boys. As a bonus we’re j…[Read more]

  • Unlike above I do use the DSG manual mode, as well as all the others at various points – just think it’s a fantastic bit of engineering and don’t miss a manual ‘box at all.

Back to golf GTD it is the first VW I’ve driven that doesn’t want to understeer you off the road when speed exceeds grip a little bit. I think it has some inside…[Read more]

  • I’m driving a 2016 GTD estate and really like it. Does everything I need it to in terms of
the boring stuff, relaxed, smooth, economical (50-54mpg if gentle on a 50 mile plus run), load carrying (it’s got properly big capacity if you take the floor and dividers out).

It then goes (as fast as I would want to on the public roads) when you want to…[Read more]

Like Seth and the things he does beyond the biking itself. Like BKXC, v jelous of all his trips especially the recent Pyrenees although his patter is becoming a bit repetitive. GMBN is good when it’s not trying too hard to entertain.

Dave Jenvey is a bit of a tool and he and his mate rode like hooligans past walkers on some of my local cheeky…[Read more]

This thread made me check mine and do a meter reading. We’re on £102 dd pcm at them moment in a 4 bed Edwardian house with good insulation, wooden double glazing and recent extension. I try to be organised with switching as the buggers never give you a good deal for loyalty – currently paying

  • Booked a week in aosta valley with the family. Looking forward to a bit of pila, Cervinia, Courmayeur and Champoluc. Woo hoo.

  • Depends what you want but I wouldn’t bother with the cavern area – it’s pretty dirty and rough tbh. Highly recommend the georgian quarter – go up the anglican cathederal tower, along to where Falkner St meets hope street , nice cafes, Philharmonic Pub if you want a pint (check out the loos) then along to the Catholic catherderal to look at that…[Read more]

Advantage SA for having a bear pit free for all at the breakdown!

I certainly didn’t see it that way – SA countered legally straight through a number of welsh rucks because they hadn’t committed enough men to secure it….

Really looking forward to that battle in the final as England will need to be on top in order to get going with the…[Read more]

Re the carping to the ref I really meant that it was a noticeable lowering of respect standards towards the ref. Not making a point that England are totally innocent in this respect just that I v much noticed the NZ SH chirping away.

Farrell talking to the ref respectfully as cptn is fine. Play acting (I didn’t see that not saying it didn’t hap…[Read more]

More coherently best most intense and controlled 80 min of rugby I’ve ever seen England play. Thought the only disgrace was NZ carping on to the ref like it is a soccer game.

Curry Underhill itoji… gave them one hell of a beating. Absolutely bloody magic.

  • Works well usually as she does too. We have a nice office with two desks – both have offices to go to also so generally rare to both be at home at same time. She seems v studious though to the extent where I seem to crack first all the time on the drinks making front…and no sign of STW type chat either!

  • I’m running the 1600 on my lid as a temporary solution. It’s a bit heavey but Not finding it unreasonable. I did find the helmet mount secure but you end up with a lot of extra height and I caught branches a couple of times so last night I ran it with the bar mount rubbers. It was slightly off center on the lid to fit with a vent but much lower…[Read more]

Liam Williams is out of whatever remains of the world cup for Wales.

May as well pack up and go home now.

1/2p is not a bad replacement to have on hand though.
If it was AWJ out I’d have agreed with you though…

  • If not averse to bike paths/canal paths on your road bike etc have a look at to get you out of town without having to battle the cars too much. I usually adapt what it comes up with but makes a good baseline starting point for route planning.
