Reply to: New Zealand – North island trip ideas please

My partner is a North Islander kiwi so I’ve been lucky with some extended holidays to NZ. Personally, I rate the Taranaki district. Some great art and culture in New Plymouth. Fantastic surf beaches and coastal scenery. Great hiking on Mount Taranaki / Egmont. Probably about a 3 hour drive from Aukland / Rotoroa

Reply to: A9 average speed camera preparatory work starts today

It would help if slow moving vehicles used the laybys to allow traffic to flow.
It would also help if lorries didn’t tailgate each other, making it impossible at times to safely overtake.
I fully agree with the earlier point about vehicles doing 90mph on the dual sections. The fight to then pull into one lane is horrendous at times.
I’m all for average speed cameras. And roll on the upgrade to dual.

Reply to: New estate car for biking

I’ve got a Legacy. Massive boot, especially with rear seats down. Being kids-free helps on that front! It’s easily taken 2 bikes (front wheel off) and 4 sets of skis and kit. Reliable enough car to run, but cars aren’t exactly my area of technical expertise.

Reply to: Risk of arrhythmia in endurance racers

I had a couple of hospital stays in September with persistent AF. Few years back I was pretty fit and doing a lot of rock climbing, which I consider caused the problem, so it’s interesting reading this post. I know that triggers include food and excercise, but I can’t work out any consistency in precise triggers. My cardiologist didn’t seem over-concerned at me continuing excercise. To be honest, there’s no danger of me overdoing it as my muscles burn out, and I struggle to get a heart rate above 100 BPM during excercise. The consultant seems optimistic that drugs and procedures will get it back under control. We’ll see.

There’s loads of good local stuff in and around the area. Easy enough to find the trails on strava.

Reply to: Any twitchers on here? Whats happened to all of the Finches?

We had siskins and golds last summer, and a few greats and blues over winter. And a noisy rabble of about 30 sparrows. Slowly but surely, the finches and tits have just disappeared, despite a range of food being left. I do sort of hold the theory that the sparrows are taking over. The RSPB has them on a red status, sop I guess I don’t mind that much 🙄

Reply to: Paypal query – my account has been blocked?

Paypal locked my account in order to review and verify after I paid for something via my phone. I suppose the tight security is to be appreciated but they did fail to tell me the payment hadn’t been made, so I got a bit of a red-face when i chased the ebay seller for the item!

Smidge does it for me. I’ve also heard that they are attracted to black clothing. Not tested that theory yet.

Reply to: How long do Five tens last?

Forever. Had my Impacts for 4 years and they have seen serious abuse, including plenty of “hike-a-biking” up munros. They may not look the coolest, but longevity is superb.
