  • I’ve done 2 trips in the last year to the Pyrenees with Basque MTB and on both occasions found 3DO knee and elbows (I use POC VPD Air) do a great job. On both trips I caught a rock to the shin once in 6 days of riding, so personally feel shin pads to be overkill for such low odds. It stings for a few minutes but that’s about it.

I have a Mach 6, upgraded the stock 160mm Fox 36 to 170mm this year. Feels better on proper steep technical stuff than before, doesn’t seem to have affected the ride in any negative way. Worth having a think about.

  • I think the warranty on XT components is 1 year (2 years on XTR) so unless you bought them late last year you may be out of luck. I sent back my XTR M9020 brakes back to ChainReaction for the same issue, replacements haven’t been any better. I have no experience with the latest M8120 or M9120 versions though.

Good and cheap don’t usually go hand in hand. Invest in a Hope BB and GXP adapter then you’ll only ever need to by replacement bearings when they, eventually, need replacing.

I’d really like to give one of those EXT Storia shocks a try, but my frame “…was designed to work with the progressiveness of an air spring.” “Any frame damage occurring due to issues related to any shock that is not what is supplied with the bike or offered as an upgrade…will not be covered under warranty.” Grrr.

I’m not really a racer type but like to do a couple each year, preferably in locations and on trails that aren’t available to ride outside the event. Southern Enduro’s at Milland is a great example.

XM9’s for me too. Did a 2 hour hike-a-bike in the Pyrenees over boulder fields to get to a trail last week and plenty of other wet scrambles throughout the week. Boots were comfy, dry and grippy throughout. Bit heavy duty for summer riding though.
