i personally think that danny’s scottish videos are almost works of art – the landscapes, the filming, the music and of course the riding. almost every frame is a poster id happily put on my wall (if i still did that sort of stuff)

i suppose the question is were to take it to next and stuff like this probably draws in people that may not be coming from a ‘biking angle’. its just an attempt to attract a bigger general public audience.

its not a bad thing in the grand scheme of things (as it leads to bikes) but this video is the second one I’ve seen to the last few days by ‘hairy’ bike blokes that I’ve thought – ‘mmmh, you’ve done better’

id go lower – i swear by gato’s on the rear (and front if i run a 29 rather than 29+ or a fat front)

I’ve got velocity p-35 rims and run the back at 21psi (front at 19psi), the wide rims help but the tyre hooks up on everything (the best 29 tyre in my opinion, the fact you can get it so cheap is a miracle). my recommendation is to drop the pressure as low as you can get away with and try some more…

    good luck.

what pressure are you running the back at?

Not the best photo but experienced a mind-blowing autumnal equinox up the Pentlands in September

The first sun rays of autumn chasing the last night of summer… And a beautiful inversion hanging around the Kips.

first mtbing on an actual ‘mtb’ rather than my raleigh bomber…

id got a ridgeback 601 for christmas 1988, 15 speed with red s cantilevers and bull moose handlebars. and 1.5″ centre ridge tyres. my dad has also specced mudguards and a rack.

more that real off road stuff, my strongest memory was how really low gearing made so much difference going up steps and generally made climbing stuff much more realistic. i had no idea that almost 30 years later, id still be spending my time effectively doing the same thing…

the weather around edinburgh has been stunning all week. glad to get out for a few hours this afternoon – trails are dry and fast. very un october-like. it will all become a memory pretty quickly though, forecast is to change as soon as tomorrow up here.

erm, my rigid ti frame cost loads. and i had to do the whole customs thing to get it to the uk. courier needed almost £700 in import duty before handing me the box.

I’m not rich by any stretch of the imagination but this once in a life time purchase thought thats still making me smile… the best thing i ever did.

six months with a kona unit. loved it but it was a ‘dipping my toe in the whole single speed thing’ fling. happened at the same time as i moved from the city centre to the hilly countryside.

i remember a few years ago on very early morning very rural ride flying past a parked taxi with the driver giving himself an erm ‘massage’. a few minutes later, an owl flew along side me for a few moments about a metre from my head. yin and yang i suppose

    love the on-one certificate idea.

surely honestly is the best policy with bikes? my wife doesn’t understand the first thing about jones bikes and i don’t understand the first thing about ‘alexander mcqueen collectibles’. we both understand what it means when the piggy bank doesn’t rattle though…

the fife coastal path is ok, you could always cycle it to north queensferry, cycle across the bridge and then dalmenys estate to edinburgh… train home or vice versa? nice afternoon out rather than amazing trails…

im a designer and between my phone, pad, laptop and desktop, spend an awful lot of time with apple.

for me, i think that there is a whole lot of clever stuff going on but i secretly pine for things to get simpler and more striped back. just like the old 29/650b/26 discussions, its all about the same stuff being offered at different sizes with other ‘features’. having recently upgraded my phone from a 5s to a 6, I’m reminded that my hands haven’t actually got bigger, so why has my phone?

an apple pencil? I’m easily seduced but i like the 3d touch of a 2hb pencil on a daler rowney pad – old skool or what?

was very much an apple fan boy, perhaps I’m just getting older and grumpier.

my jones is the only bike i own. set x10 speed.

with a 29er front, fat front option and a load of different tyres and various bike packing bags etc i feel i’ve got a bike thats adaptable for anything id want to do on my bike.

had a few other second bikes (carbon hardtail 26″, single speed 29er) but when the jones is about nothing was winning the ‘which bike today’ competition other than it.

having said all that, I’m talking to a mate about an old kona 26″ of his for use as a hack bike for local messing about/scooting to the shops etc. ill see how i get on…

    Uncle Peach.
No idea why or what his real name was.
Knew how to ‘read’ slot machines, was banned from several pubs in Edinburgh due to the fact.

Another guy called Paul turned up at a pub football game.
    What’s your name?
    Paul.
We already have a Paul, choose another name.
    Erm… Susan.

    Still Susan 20 years later…

can’t stand loads of bands beyond the many already mentioned that give me that weird ‘transferred embarrassment’ feeling.

toploader, mpeople, stereophonics all spring immediately to mind as really clear examples. comic sans in sound.

give me a lo-fi droney druggy mess anyday…
