Conner was real character, I loved him and the era of the Twelves.

He was having a pop at Chris Dixon, accusing the Kiwis of cheating by building their boats in glass fibre when every other 12 metre had been in aluminium.

He reckoned it was so the could make the end of the boat thinner in construction, when the rules demand an equal skin thickness throughout the hull. Easy to check with aluminium, nigh on impossible with glass fibre except by drilling holes in it.

Dixon’s reply to the request was “over my dead body”. Conner, without batting an eyelid retorted ” I can live with that”. Even Dixon had to chuckle.

His time keeping at the start of a race was phenomenal, inch perfect on the line, every time.

First man to lose the America’s Cup, and the first to win it back.

That was when Conner sailed a cat in the Cup, First ever multihull to take part .

The New Zealander’s claimed that the Deed of Gift had never been changed to allow a boat with shorter waterline length than the stated one of 90 feet if memory serves.

They built that monster of 120 feet overall. Conner responded with a 60 foot long catamaran :D Gotta love a lateral thinker.

I never understood the IACC boats. They wanted a change from the Twelves as the boat were not used for anything else and then opted for a boat whose sole use is the competition.

At least the Twelves could be raced in classic events and were great sea boats.

IIRC they’d stop sailing the IACCs when the wind got above 20 knots, when a Twelve is just gathering her skirts and getting up to pace.

They are beautiful boats too, well above the waterline anyway.

Let’s see a return to the J class. :D Probably cheaper that the foilers and better for match racing.

Bring back, Conner, Blackaller, Turner, **** it, even Dixon.

I’d like to see a kite surfer that qualified under the rules for craft entering the America’s Cup. :D Assuming that they’ve not changed them too much.

Mind you, I lost a lot of interest when they moved from 12 metre boats.

    Progress, bah, humbug.

Well the 21st century seems to be beyond him.

I use an old flip phone as it’s small and a Giff Gaff PAYG sim.

Only need to make a call every six months to keep it active.

If i remove the aerials from the house, and only watch on demand amazon/netflix and the like. I understand that i could still watch iplayer, but shouldnt the onus be on the BBC to make sure i couldn`t watch it unless i had a licence?

    No. HTH.

We bought our first house in 1981 for £16,000. sold it in 1987 for £64,000. The buyers sold it four years later for £42,000. Today it’s north of £250,000. If you’re speculating on property it’s best to think long term, or get your timing right :D

If prices had risen would you offer to pay more? Buy a house cos you need somewhere to live.

Count yourself lucky that it ended before you’d sold houses and bought one together. Walk, no run away and thank your lucky stars.

Mad as a box of frogs, women. Married to Mrs Z for 36 years and I still have very little idea of what goes on in her head.

I’m 17 stone and the only trouble I’ve had is standard wheels going out of true. Over the years, I’ve bought 2 sets of hand built wheels from Harry Rowlands and not had in issue since.

They weigh more than standard, but that’s not really an issue :-).

Fit them from new, sell the originals and the cost to replace them is negligible.

Sure, I’d like minimum spoke, blingy wheels, but that ain’t gonna happen.

Just bought the non carved one. Seems fine from the little I’ve ridden on it. £74 from Charlie the bike monger if you fancy trying one. Cheapest I could find. They look good too, but then I’d be a tart if that was the main reason for buying one.

I’m having doubt about paying £60 for the Brooks ergo grips though. But they do look trick

Whatever the outcome I bet the cyclist wishes he’d minded his own business. It’s all very very well remonstrating with strangers about their behaviour, but you never know who you’re dealing with.

Try leaving Watford FC via Cardiff Road after a match. Hundreds of cars leaving and there’s always someone who insists on going against the flow. Parked cars both sides of the road and room for just one down the middle.

It happens often enough that you’d think they’d learn.

Can’t help much as Mrs Z says that I never actually asked her to marry me.

Seems odd that we both popped into the registry office one Saturday morning.

I’ve had a look at them in my LBS. They have volt bikes, better looking in the flesh that on a screen. They also stock Ridgeback but they seemu more mountain bike orientated.

I was thinking about one for when I start my new job. It’s a 12 mile commute against the 4 minute walk I’ve havery at present.

I was very taken with the Trek Conduit+. Hybrid styled and looks more like a conventional bike than the Volt range. With the motor in the crank rather than the rear hub, it’ll be much easier to repair a puncture by the roadside. Going to have a test ride nearer to the time I change jobs.

IIRC Paul Elvstrom designed an earlier America’s cup 12 metre with the winches being pedal powered. An added bonus was that with the grinders below deck there was less windage. It never caught on then either :D

Did you tell the TA that the clamp was damaged before she used it ? If not, pay her in full for the camera. As to the cultural differences, explain that you don’t see others suffer for no good reason.

Failing that, donate a months salary (yours) to a local charity.
