Travelling to Oxford from Haslmere. A ticket to Guildford and a separate ticket from Guildford to Oxford cheaper than buying a straight through ticket. Money I saved was almost enough to buy a coffee on the train!

I always build a fire when I wild camp. A few beers and some fish on the griddle – nothing better. Obviously requires a more discreet location otherwise attention of busy bodies/nt rangers/land owner will ensue. Best spots for me are the South Downs and the Surrey Hills. Though aircraft noise rather spoil the rustic idyll.

    – Start Rant
The number of times over the years I’ve had NT ranger dicks telling me where the nearest camp site is… They just don’t get it… They’ll` then start telling me I shouldn’t build fires because of the impact on the ecology. That’s after they’ve clambered out of their 2 ton 4WD having driven over a meadow to reach me. The irony of it escapes them.

I was there about 10 years ago great place. Camped overnight. Disappointing amount of litter – esp Jeagermeister bottles (empty alas) – left by other campers. Was hoping for a beach fire but there was zero driftwood available. Wonderful seascape and sense of isolation.

View it as a challenge not a threat… Really, if you can’t do the jump, no big deal, applaud those who can, take the chicken run, and then work on how you can up your game and emulate.

Worrying how so many people want to dumb down trails to the lowest ‘anyone can do it’ level. Yes there are lines I can’t do in the Surrey Hills – just makes me respect those who can – and reinforces my determination to session them until I can. Isn’t that what it’s all about, challenging yourself and being outside the comfort zone?

Did a winter ascent of Toubkal 5 years ago. Really enjoyed it, great views at over 4000m. Didn’t use a guide just hiked up to the refuge from Imlil. Spent the night – prob the most miserable and cold refuge I’ve ever stayed in. Did the ascent early nxt day.

Really you DO NOT need a guide!! Forget Exodus – adventure holidays for the unadventurous. Just follow the well beaten track – it’s like the M1, can’t miss it. That plus there’ll be hundreds of other people doing it as well. Make sure you’ve got a ice axe and crampons and know how to use them. Also a couple of nights in Imlil beforehand to acclimatise to the alltitude.

Really it’s one of the easiest 4000m peaks you can do. I took my 14 year old nephew with me. He had no probs.

Save yourself a stack of money and buy an aeropress for 25 quid. Seriously it’s the best coffee I’ve ever had! Don’t be put off by its low price and simplicity.

Why the **** would anyone want to live in Surrey?

    Err for the MTB’ing!!

Have you never been to the Surrey Hills and North Downs? Used to live in SW London but was down in the Surrey Hills every weekend riding so decided to move here.

Call it a politics thread in disguise if you want. I’m just trying to understand the fractured society we live in today.

Wish it was all about scroungers and those who don’t want to work. Sadly though it’s people – and kids – in real need. Too easy to condem with the cliched daily mail nostrums…

Whenever I’m out on the bike or walking I always pick up the first bit of rubbish I come accross. Thing is there’s so much of it I need to make it the first 10 pieces!

I don’t believe most rubbish is dropped maliciously, sadly, many just don’t see anything wrong with littering.

What’s worse is the litter on the trails, dropped by the mtb’ing community. Lets not absolve ourselves. Was ar Gisburn forest and could not believe the trail rubbish. Energy gel wrappers – the bikers big mack wrapper!

Actually, it really is as simple as going out, find a jump (smaller the better), and PRACTICE. When I say practice I mean spend an hour. Do it 30 times. Just keep doing it till u have a sense of the dynamics involved. Then find a bigger different jump and repeat. Why think it comes easy? No,it requires PRACTICE. You don’t buy it, you PRACTICE. Nothing sadder than blokes on 5k bikes dodging easy jumps. Just put the time in. It’s really not that hard. Then start building jumps so we can all enjoy. Ooops someone is going to accuse me of trolling… I know they are… I can feel it…

Strange that the chicken run keyboard warriors should be described as ‘the actives’? The prob is that if they rode as much as they punched the keyboard they might not feel so threatend by a bunch of easy jumps…

Actually I’m prob more local to the area than most, and prob know it much better than most. Def been coming to Redlands a lot longer than most. Far as I know redlands is nobodies back garden – and I do own the FC, part of it anyway. Contentious, always has been. But hey that’s where the fun is. Busy, no. They’re all over at Pitch. Most of the time I never see anyone in Redlands. Sadly it’s beyond the skill set of the forum keyboard warriors. Open access, Scottish style, is what we need.

Hey that looks good! If I built anything like that in the Surrey Hills I’d have a price on my head and get hunted down and killed by the keyboard warriors on this forum.

Are you by any chance a troll? Sorry, that seeems to be the standard response on here if you are of the ‘air time persuasion’…

No, the 1 foot lip is to encourage those new to jumping. Call at a service to the biking community… Lets encourage people to participate and widen their skills. Not going to do that with a 15ft gap jump. Those that can do that stuff know where to find it. Shot down and accused of trollery by a bunch of ‘chicken runners’ questioning my altruism.

I don’t force jumps on anyone, that would just be silly. The jump has a new line to it. The old line preserved for those who want to take it. Just offering more options for the ambitious.

Ooops, forget to ask, don’t you ‘rubber on the ground guys’ just get tired of always taking the chicken run? Have you ever considered golf? Ha Ha – I’m even laughing at my own jokes now.

Always the same keyboard warriors on this forum… Do/can any of u lot actually ride a bike? Anything that remotely challenges the received opinion of the inert middle aged is apparently trolling. Phew, that feels better…

PSA – Can someone post a link to their site, I’ve never heard of them, with those prices sounds like I should.

Good man Euro – I share your sentiments. Thanks for the building tips – that’s what I was hoping for. Far too many arm chair mtb’ers on this forum. Too interested in the kit and not the riding experience. Conginitally averse to anything but a middle aged consensus. Now I’ve done it – the armchair warriors will will have their cross hairs on me in no time…

In a secret place, some where on Leith Hill, there will be a new jump. And you know what, it’ll add to the riding experience. IMHO anyway…

I was hoping for constructive help… If I only rode on land I owned I’d never venture beyond my garden or the the public highway would I…

Steeper transitions/longer tabletops can intimidate and result in a tendency not to pump as required on the lip – fear of going too high and losing control. Easy to say but make sure you commit and pump! Just let the bike rise up under you, stay relaxed and you’ll maintain a level flight. It really is all about confidence. Confidence comes with practice. Just keep hitting that tabletop for 30 mins untill you nail it. Suddenly you’ll stop thinking about it and it just gets easy. That’s what I love about jumping…

Expensive? I pay 225 a go for tyres on my “Sports Estate” and to add insult to injury they’re run flats…
