some stuff I have been enjoying recently:

husker du – new day rising
the congos – the heart of the congos
african headcharge – off the beaten track
    the shamen – entact
    the black angels – passover

probably not your sort of thing but anyways…

easygirl – i didn’t know he was getting a kicking, only realised afterwards when a passerby raised the alarm – hence my pondering. Nice to see you have done your homework – shows I’ve touched a nerve.

most of these legitimate protests are hijacked by rent a mob muppetts whose only intention is to bait, assault and wind up the police

dont be so naive to think these are members of the public exercising their right to free speech and democracy.

Are you quoting your boss verbatim there?

I suggest its YOU that needs to open your eyes. The suppression of legitimate demonstrations does not uphold our freedoms, it undermines them. Nob heads shouting stuff is NO excuse for unacceptable and disporportionate police violence against the general public.

May I remind you that you are a public servant? May i remind you that you are duty bound to protect my right to protest against anything i see fit to protest about without shoving your riot shield into my face because someone else is shouting rude words at your colleague?

I am ashamed of the police for the role they have played in recent times and I suspect that many are uncomfortable with what is now playing out in the public eye – are you?

nah Stoner, got to disagree with you. The thing about ‘running’ battles is that the only people involved are the ones who actually want to be there, everybody else buggers off quickly or gets out of the way. The hardcore lot who want a confrontation (police :-) and demonstrators) can then get their kicks.

The kettle is indesciminate. EVERYBODY gets penned. This means that the 99% of people who don’t want a scrap get pushed together with the 1% that do and held for as long as the police want to play the game for. The single biggest outcome of this is that EVERYBODY gets pissed off, including those that didn’t come for a fight. Tensions rise, police get abused, lash out and the temperature rises and we see the kinds of things now on our TV screens.

These incidents were not isolated cases on 1st & 2nd of April. There are dozens of reports of assaults by the police on protesters.

Stoner is right, the police have a very difficult job at these kind of demos. What is becoming apparent is the tactics that were used were agreed and planned way in advance by politicians and senior officers.

Having been on quite a few demonstrations in my time I can tell you that the manner in which the police approached this protest was markedly different to previous times. They had clearly been told to stamp out any potential trouble immediately rather than diffuse any growing issues. The problem is that that order translated to indescriminate attacks on protesters and (ahem) people walking home from work. The use of the kettle to pen people in is always going to raise tensions on both sides and has now been proved to be totally counter-productive.

Heads should roll for what happened but blaiming the grunts on the frontline is missing the point.

Rudeboy is quite correct. Its a tactic known as the kettle. People are penned into a space and denied water and the use of toilet facilities – there are a number of legal challenges ongoing against this tactic. From first hand accounts from yesterday the police used this tactic very agressively. For them it works on 2 levels – firstly it discourages those on a peaceful protest from continuing and secondly it aggrevates those who are prepared to use direct action. There were a numbers of scenes yesterday where people desperate to break through police lines to leave the protest were denied access and arrested when they tried to run.

some good information here on today’s events: http://london.indymedia.org.uk/articles/992

I used to have a 3 mile each way commute along a beach front and I reckon it didn’t improve my fitness but certainly kept me toned if you know what i mean.

Now doing 9/10 miles each way plus a couple of decent climbs and that DEFINITELY has had a positive effect!

If the RTS, camp for climate change and other well experienced groups are involved, then the met are in for busy day. Plenty of diversionry protests. Lots of disinformation in the internet and via mobile phones. Meanwhile there will be some very fluffy, original, humorous and PEACEFUL direct actions going on. I suspect that the media focus will be on other things.

The anarchist groups will be well up for a confrontation if the police are looing for one and I think there will be some problems because the cops have made it clear that they will be all over the demostrators like a rash and they KNOW that will lead to trouble.

I’m kind of glad their are people out there who are prepared to meet state agression head-on. I just wish it wasn’t necessary.

Lets not forget that the reason the G20 are meeting is because the financiers and corporations that the police will be protecting tomorrow have f*cked all of us up through their incompetence and greed.

Mass strikes would likely cripple the UK still further but I agree it would galvanise the authorities.

Don’t you think that the anti-capitalist protestors will feel pretty justified this time? After all the economic mess that we are in is not some random occurence; the lack of regulation and outright greed of our largest financial corporations have got us into this mess.

Maybe it’s unsurprising that given the lack of an audience from the government that the language of protest is become more agressive.

utter crap. the ‘language of protest’ is relatively moderate – check g-20meltdown.org for reference on that.

the reporting language of protest by a select area of the press has become more agressive because it attracts viewers, shifts papers and gets web hits.
