very finely sliced cucumber on the windscreen always works well. it dries to rock hard very quickly and is an arse to get off.

    agree with stoner TBH

juan has jumped on me for allegedly being a racist/xenopohobe etc etc in the past but has also forgotten that I started the thread on here calling for him to come back after he was treated pretty roughly by some forum members on a thread he started about motorbike helmets.

juan – you seem unable to distinguish between well intentioned banter and genuine unpleasantness. From what I can see 99% of the problems on this issue on STW are caused by you.

If riding is making you feel worse then don’t bloody do it! Sounds like you have enough going on.

Your mates, your bikes and the trails will still be there after you have mended yourself and had some time out.

Seemed like a reasonable sentence (the indefinite bit) given the crimes – still can’t even get my head around how people can be capable of that sort of thing though.

no neither can I. Maybe its cos i have 2 little boys, but I have found it near enough impossible to watch any coverage of this case without getting insanely angry or welling up :(

personally i’m more concerned with landfill and waste – our allocation of bins is full without the extra load of disposables.

see now i find that very interesting because our friends who are filling up wheelie bins with disposables have gone mental on reducing packaging waste in all other areas because they have no choice. As a result they reckon they’ve cut down on over half of their waste packaging which shows what can be done.

being running the same combo for ages without a problem. try putting a little spray of lube/grease into the area where the saddle rails go into the saddle shell.

    I think the main problem with the surveys carrie is twofold;

firstly most surveys have been instigated by people with a vested interest in the outcome which casts a lot of doubt on the findings. Secondly as you say everybodies circumstances and houses are different.

‘ am sorry is there a reason NOT to be worried about carbon footprints? Have you got some secret knowledge about the subject that the vast majority of scientists are missing? Is there a reason to not try and reduce it?’

no, i was attempting to make the point that some get very excited about single issues, in this case one that is open to debate on its genuine value.

don’t let it get to you mastiles_fanylion. In my experience some people get very bent up about the nappies/landfill/carbon footprint thing.

The bottom line (boomboom) is that having kids increases your carbon footprint, using cotton ones might increase it a bit less but it depends on your circumstances. Think about some of the other things that have an effect on the environment wrt kids. Are you going to buy premade baby food or mix up your own fruit and veg sourced from local suppliers? Are you going to buy brand new clothes for them or get second hand stuff from family and friends/boot fairs etc?

If you are in for twins then i reckon there’s nothing wrong in getting them birthed, home and getting aclimatized before even thinking about this stuff.

best of luck by the way

We used cotton bottoms on our first and found them to be easy peasy. its like everything when you first have a child – it seems unsurmountably difficult to begin with but after a couple of months getting into a routine its fine.

If you look at some of the comparisions done between carbon footprint of reusables and disposables you will find they are about the same. The main issue after that is the landfill one. You can get biodegradable disposable nappies form most places these days and i know a lot of people who have gone down this route.

don’t have kids so am just speaking from experience of my friends, but it seems the problems come when blokes expect time off but the wives don’t get the same, so I think it sounds like you have the balance right.

yep, mrs yoss rides a bit but also goes out with friends one night a week and does other stuff during the week too. If I compared ‘hours off’ she’d probably be ahead of me but then i don’t have to look after 2 kids for 12 hours a day so i reckon its all good.

Agree 100% with oldgit about riding with ‘non-dads’. 2 kids is a totally different proposition to one.

I get an early morning ride in most weekends (out at 7ish – back by 12) but thats about it for the mtb. I commute 18/20 miles a day to work so still manage to stay reasonably healthy.

Personally i think you need to accept that you will ride less and at less sociable times when you have kids, end of.

Geetee1972 is spot on – I would set £150 aside from the 1k for a decent helmet, gloves, shorts, a hydration pack, a few tools and if you are commuting some bright lights.

£850 will get you a nice hardtail. Go ride a few, there is a massive selction at that price point; orange, GT, giant, kona, felt, charge, trek, spesh, cube etc etc
