I think the BAF is hombu/Tokyo style. See if you can find a dojo near to you that teaches Iwama. It’s more aggro/old school and well, martial, I would say.

Nine circles website is good for pj’s etc

There are a number of different styles of aikido. Some are more ‘practical’ shall we say than others.

My security teams have all used it in the real world for pinning, disengagement and disarming. It works extremely well.

Gaming is now a part of growing up for many kids and why not? The key is balance. My two (7 & 8) have a PS4, iPads, a wii and access to a Mac. They use these a fair bit, but between them they also race BMX, play rugby, football and hockey, love Egyptology and other ancient periods (they love the British museum) , cooking, dressing up, hanging with their mates etc blah blah blah.

My opinion is that ‘banning’ gaming is counter productive. Your approach to parenting overall is what counts. Helping them develop a mature and intelligent approach to games which includes monitoring any online presence and building their resilience to being manipulated is no different to the mentoring you most likely already provide for their face to face friends and social situations. Computers, games, VR etc aren’t going away and they aren’t the problem. I’m unsure why, in the technological age that we live in, you would want to deprive your children of those experiences and developing those skills.

What’s the difference between a plastic surgeon and an Ofsted inspector?

    A plastic surgeon tucks features….

    Good luck

My hilarious story involves a student getting shot in the face with a crossbow bolt during and another student having to be physically restrained after going loopy on legal highs. Both on the day of inspection. That was fun.

It’s a load of bollocks IMO

I’m delighted that I’m in the minority and that most folks can transmute the festivities into being about family and friends and happiness. It just seems like a massive, pointless lie to me. One based on consumerism and bullshit religious tradition. I wish I could overlook this bit but I can’t. :-) this is a fault with me rather than others I feel.

Days are getting longer now, which is very welcome.

Mine is on the 18th. The basic ingredients are:

    1. A couple of hundred lecturers, technical and support staff
    2. A 2pm start and a late license
    3. No food

The result, as it is every year, will be utter carnage. :D

I usually take my lot out for some food and couple of slow beers and then head over to main do at about 9 when it’s properly underway. Far too many individual acts of debauchery to list, the Facebook gallery of shame that gets posted up the next day is very funny.

Probably not what you want to hear but…..

    Drink less beer
Eat better and use an app to get a idea of daily calories
    Walk around a bit more
Put time aside to ride your bike every week – you won’t actually melt if it’s raining – just get out and do it.

If your initial response to any of the about starts with ‘but’ then that’s your problem

    :-)

Unless the west is prepared to address the social, economic and political issues in the region after IS have been defeated then there’s not much point in letting off a few brimstones because everyone will be back there in 10 years time.

Oxford perhaps? Lots of healthcare jobs (big field I know) and good access to the chilterns for riding. The Welsh centres aren’t ‘that far’ away, nor is Shropshire.

In some places fleas have become resistant to frontline. Your local vet will be able to recommend the most effective treatment, we use stronghold on our cats which works a treat.

Bombs and hoovers etc are fine but unless you get the cat properly sorted the problem will return. Also the moggy will attract fleas which will hop onboard and then get poisoned by the frontline / stronghold etc.

    Then you can stop scratching.

I think you’ve done very well for the money. Very well indeed. No doubt you’ll be scanning the sales and eBay for shiny bits to upgrade what you’ve got but nevertheless it’s a great base.

One of my many hats is safeguarding in education and my view (from the very limited info in the OP) is that the teacher’s response is not appropriate in any way UNLESS it’s part of some broader, agreed approach (which I cannot imagine that it would be).

There are a myriad of ways that challenging behaviour can be successfully addressed and children supported. This isn’t one of them IMO.

My wife and I spend about an equal amount on stuff that we like.

For her it’s photography, aikido seminars/weekly training and clothes.

For me it’s bikes and odd bit of clothing/footwear.

She earns more than me nowadays (used to be the other way round) but everything we have goes into a joint account and gets shared out equally after family stuff and the kids stuff has been done.

    Is that weird?

Easy stuff that performs ‘a function’ is what I’m doing at present. There seems to be real pressure these days to make every meal a culinary experience and that makes healthy eating/weight loss etc much more difficult IMO

Tonight its quorn mince, peas, carrots, broccoli and kale with brown rice plus some homemade spice mix to make things vaguely interesting. Calorie counter to circa 650

Oh and a pint of water, go me :-)

My 7 year old is hooked on bmx racing and we have a couple of tracks in a 5 mile radius which is cool. He’s currently on a mafia BB Cush but has a proper haro junior bike coming at Christmas. Great fun blasting around the circuit, but crashing hurts more and takes far longer to heal at 43!

Leave my current job and set up my own little thing. Have a good product that most schools and colleges would be interested in, just road testing it at present ready for general release next year.

Ride the ridgeway, South Downs way and the bit inbetween over a few days next summer.

Recent convert to tubeless over here. Using specialized purg/GC on dt swiss rims. Absolute piece of piss to do the set up. Inflated and seated off a track pump first time. Running at lower pressures than before, definitely more grip and can feel the extra traction letting me carry extra speed. No punctures, which is a massive bonus at this time of year when normally the farmers are leaving spiky debris from cut back hedges etc all over the bridleways.

It’s certainly worth researching known good rim/tyre combos, apart from that I don’t see why you wouldn’t.

Sounds rubbish, nothing worse than getting excited about a new ride’s arrival only for it to not happen.

My experience of canyon is a bit different and I’ll post it not for balance, because it’s not right that people have been dicked about, but to show that this is maybe not universally how they operate.

I placed an order for a canyon in mid to late June. I got a delivery date of early July and the bike turned up one day before the EDD.

After riding it for a couple of months relatively small issue arose which was a result of how it had been assembled by canyon. I emailed them asking what they thought was best. 30 mins later I got a phone call from a mechanic at their London centre asking me to pack the bike up and they’d arrange a courier to pick it up. As it turned out it was easier just to drop it in to them in person which I did. The issue was fixed FOC in a couple of hours.

Got last years 7.9 CF SL

Fits really well – 5 ft 10 on a medium

Climbs great, is pretty light (10.3 kg out of the box), descends like an xc machine and I’ve found it to be extremely comfortable – have put in plenty of 50 milers and rides over 5 hours with no discomfort at all. Carbon all the way IMO
