Last group ride I went on had:

    29er, full rigid, singlespeed
    29er, hardtail, singlespeed
    26er, hardtail singlespeed
    69er, hardtail, singlespeed.

Thus, I concur that 29ers are in the ascendency and 26ers are as popular as 69ers…

    and no-one uses gears.

OP – same prob. I properly stripped and re-lubed all with a light lube. It made just enough difference to make the downshifts work. Now he’s used to it, its all fine.

I’ve been to one of these at my kids nursery sports day. I didn’t really know what to expect beforehand and turned up in work clothes and leather shoes.

The mum’s race went first and it looked fast. The face was fairly close as the usual Olympian bobsleigh mum wasn’t there. Then it was the dad’s race. I noted that most dads had gone for the subtle “normal clothes but running shoes” look, but some were fully ready in shorts and t-shirt on what was quite a breezy and cool day. Hmmm more serious than I thought. Anyway I got a bad start, but came through for 3rd I think. My kids were a bit disappointed, but it wasn’t a total embarrassment. I’m going to aim for this kind of mid-table mediocrity for future sports days and hopefully never raise the expectation of a win for my kids whilst not being too embarrassing.

    Its a fine line.

About 6 months for me before they become sloppy and have vertical play.
Riding is about 2x a week and 1/2 the school runs are by bike.

I’m surprised at how long everyone else is getting out of their cleats.

We were running a mixed sport singlespeed team, and despite injury and an early home with the kids for one of the team, we all enjoyed it.

I appreciate the course has to cater for all and the difficulty in arranging purpose built stuff, so overall it did well enough. I reckon Gee has nailed it ^(a few pages). Maybe a few too-many pushing climbs for the majority of people and the first descent became off-putting for a few folk. Everyone on course imo, was polite and enthusiastic which definitely adds to the occasion.

The camping was great, well drained. The arena seemed close-ish despite us being near the far edge of field 2. Plenty of nice hot showers. All good.

Overall, we had a great w-e racing and caught up with plenty of mates.
I reckon this is a better venue than Eastnor. Possibly some course tweaks would be nice, but the reality is that some more firepower in my legs is probably whats needed.

Ps – 32:18 on a 29er which was fine really. I didn’t start my laps until the late evening, so it would be interesting to go back and have a crack at the hills when they are dry/not cut up.

Less grip and volume on the rear.
    Tubeless and low pressures 15/19psi

One set of ‘summers’ and one set of ‘muds’

Cheap as chips and try and run till worn out, patching any holes too big for sealant.

Really, really try hard not to have a great big bag of ‘nearly worn, but might be useful tyres’.

that’s the sort of thing I usually do :-)

Most similar was on a first ride with a nice new wheelset. The front mech was mucky and jamming a little, so I thought i’d help it along with my foot on a nice fast bit of downhill. Obviously I slipped then jammed my foot in the back wheel, which threw me off the seat, and part onto the ground, whilst the bike still stayed upright-ish. I ground to a halt many metres later to the sound of spoke after spoke snapping on my jammed foot. Knee, back and sides were grazed to bits and my foot had lots of deep red lines cut into it.

    that’ll learn me…

Mrs Yak has got enduras and dhbs. She rates the top-of-the range dhbs (whatever they are called) as having a better pad than the enduras. The cheaper dhbs definitely have a thinner pad. Also goes for bibs over shorts. I think the dhb ones now have a bib that unclips.

Chamois cream too if you are not already using some. I reckon this adds hours onto the comfort scale.

Gee – nice one. Me and Mrs Yak will be up for this.

Mrs Yak has just killed 2 sets of kevlars – front and rear in about 3 weeks of wet gritty/sandy riding. Properly bedded in. Bit disappointed really as I have done a similar amount of riding using Clarkes sintered and theres plenty of life left in those.

Andy – I guess it down to whether your mud is sandy/gritty or claggy. If gritty definitely go for sintered.

As Ianfitz/ Stans said, but I go -1 for the rear and – 5 for the front

    2.2 x-king or race king at 19psi

I wouldn’t bother upping it for road sections. I doubt it will make much difference. I had mine down to 12psi by mistake recently and whilst drifty on the descents, I doubt it slowed me much on the climbs.

Anyone ridden there this week? How’s it running at the mo please.

For a 1- 1.5hr early ride on straightforward trails or road, i’d get straight up and out the door but take a banana or apple to scoff once i’d got going. If it was going to be tricky riding i’d have a coffee first.

2.75mm? pah- that’s barely bigger than a 2.6mm pea. You’d never get an appreciable extra amount of wasabi on them.

Joe – fwiw, my loose-until-cut crown race was a fsa steel one. On reflection I think the steerer was too small as I just remembered that the previous headset (ritchey) on the same fork also needed a cut crown race.

    Yak
    Full Member

Yes, me too. Although I assumed that the crown race had stretched as it had been fitted quite a few times. I just cut the crown race and it all works fine.

Now you’ve posted this I wonder whether it was the steerer. Anyhows- all fixed.

Standard X-Kings go tubeless fine with stans fwiw. I don’t think a ust 29er X-King is out yet. They come up a little narrow for the stated width though.

Yes worth it. Used everyday on the school runs and off road for fun. Proper parts on them, so all easily serviceable. Light and everything fits well. Recommended.

I’ve got a few. However, my strava leaderboards are mere targets for my wife to go out and better. Obviously I rule the downhill segments household battle cos i’m a bloke  , but uphill…i’m getting had.

Razing around on a bike that feels like a big bmx is great. But my back is too old for that now, so I’ve swapped my little ss for a correct size ss.

    Yak

Out of the saddle – possibly ok if you’ve enough room to move around, but at some point you are going to be grinding out a climb sat down. Surely the right size is essential for this?

    Yetiman – sounds like a perfect lead-in to a pedal bike. :-)

    Yak

You could always get the cnoc 14, or whatever fits and if she’s not ready for pedals, take the cranks off and its just a bigger balance bike for a bit. Put the cranks back on when ready for pedals.

Had a lamona integrated cooker and gas hob before. Only 1 year of use mind, but no problems. Oven ran 10% hotter than stated though.

Seriously though, thats a great choice.
Cracking location for all cycling, plenty of good local shops (check out peakpies in the butchers, drinkwaters for stwbuildingtrackworld stuff etc), rail… its all there. Enjoy!

    Plenty pubs in Whaley

Navigation – Buxworth – good outdoor spot.
Old Hall – Whitehough – tolerates southerners asking for flat ales

hold on, these are near Whaley Bridge…….

    The same…
I suspect all kids -boy or girls do this.

School fixes it though. Its school uniform only and nothing to get petty over.

IHN – no worries, but i had initially responded to this thread with a branded product – so i’m not all what I preach

The homemade ones are tastier and much cheaper though.

Although not yet tried by me, there are some receipes for sushi rice based cake/bars which i’ll dig out at some point. Basically normalish food, but made to fit a jersey pocket. This thread has reminded me to get some made.

It’ll work well with more nuts in lieu of the fruit. Will swing in favour of a ‘marathon’ flavour and less ‘picnic’ minus the chocolate of course.

    Yak

IHN – I agree – certainly for most, expensive products are not required. But when you’re hungery on a long ride, a jersey pocket full of nice, cheap, homemade bars – see above is just the ticket.

Are we not after stuff to go in jersey pockets/ water bottles here for maximum ooomph for what you carry? Isn’t that what most mean by ‘energy’ food/drink?

Also, if you’ve got the inclination, this is the business:

    Ingredients:
    • 3/4 cup nut butter (almond OR cashew OR peanut)
    • 3/4 cup golden syrup or honey
    • 1 1/2 cups roasted raw nuts and / or seeds (almonds, pecans, walnuts, cashews, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds- use your favorites in any combination)
    • 1 cup unsulfured dried fruit (cherries, cranberries, blueberries, apricots, pineapple, raisins- use your favorite dried fruits in any combination)
    • 4 cups GF brown rice crispy cereal
    • 1/8 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    Preparation:
Line a large baking sheet with baking paper
    Course grind the nuts
In a large saucepan melt nut butter with syrup over medium low heat. Stir and watch carefully to prevent scorching. When the mixture is smooth and bubbling cook for about 1 minute. Remove from heat. Add salt and vanilla and stir to combine. Use a large spatula to stir in nuts, dried fruit and cereal.
Scrape mixture on to the prepared baking sheet. Use the spatula to evenly spread the mixture on the pan. Place a large piece of baking paper over the mixture and use a rolling pin to smooth the top of the mixture. Store in the fridge.

You may need to increase the nut butter and syrup to get it to hold well as a bar. (I’ve doubled it before, but its definitely verging on chubster food then…tasty though!)

decorative, but as birky said- check if the tyre is directional.

but cookeaa has a point too

It is worth a check all over, bar alignment, are the hubs/headset correctly adjusted, enough grease in bearings if cup and cone? I’m not recommending a complete strip down and rebuild, although thats what i’ve done before on new bikes when the hassle/time of going back and moaning is far greater than a little of my spanner time, but just a check that its not a fri afternoon build….
