Stop and sweep up the corners first.

    Singlespeeds look cooler.

    True.

All the single speeders I know also wear wooly hats inside as fashion statements and have bead bracelets.

It's poor form to mock people who need a mobility aid designed to allow the old and frail to continue using their bikes…

It's as bad as the Apple fan boys jumping up and down every time a Mac is questioned.

I run 1×9 but I can see the arguments for s/s Quirrel.

    a) less to go wrong/break.
    b) less maintenance/no cables to stretch.
    c) different riding experience (are you a spinner or a grinder?)

would sir like a coffee to finish?

I see the benefit of a 1×9 or a 1×10. You have a chance to get up those hills, but SS, either legs of steel and tungsten or not bothered about pushing up them.

However on a flat city street, then it would be pretty good, or a dirt track, but then it that just saying ss are glorified BMX's. If that is the case, then I see the point, BMX's are great fun, even though I look like a clown riding one with my long legs.

Seems a little strange you even bothered to open the thread to share that nugget of wisdom with us. What I "don't really get" is people's propensity to open and reply to threads and decry something which they have no direct experience with.

Maybe you can share some wisdom rather than jumping around on your single speed high horse.

Replacement locks are dirt cheap on Ebay I paid 9 quid for 4 locks. 12 quid for 6

I don't really get the whole single speed thing, unless it's on relatively flat ground.

I always feel that I might as well just get my Raleigh Grifter out of storage and ride that again.

I go with cake, cake, carrot cake, brownies, coffee, cake, anything made locally by grannies that resembles cake with a good 80 years of baking experience.

    Some cake.

Seats in store for bored wives/husbands.

Even a bike shop with a proper coffee bar would be excellent, sit and drink a real cup of coffee (paid for) whilst thinking about what to buy

It's got darkish down here in Newcastle now.

It was always a lot lighter back home in Fort William when I was a nipper

800 miles – that would cost me under 100 quid in diesel.

I take it you live in the far north of scotland or out in the islands then?

Boba Fatt – he had physically turned them around 180 degrees.

They were the innovators of the FS market. Dirty great big bits of yellow rubber for rear shocks.

Did Missy Giove ride for them?

    Where is the bike located?

Maybe there is a trustworthy member willing to go and pick it up for you.

True, everybody has a duty of care to take care of their own belongings, but still I would expect better security at events.

Or is this really such a new thing?

I've seen superstar wheels recommended on other forums, they have some cheap ones on offer just now, 89 quid, but I've never really heard of them which makes me wary.

Is the company as a whole a bit naff or is it just certain components?

Bin bags – stick your wheels in one, frame with bars sideways in the others and carry it on. Stick it in the luggage rack or on the table and stare aggresively at anybody trying to complain about you taking up the table, not like you are going to doing it on a daily basis.

If there is an organized gang going around events, then one would expect future event organizers to take some duty of care and setup a registration system for bikes.
It would be a bit of a fanny on, but then at least you would know that if your bike was going to be nicked, they would have to mug you for the ticket to get it out as well. Although putting stuff in a van might not overcome this, not sure if they would be allowed to search a vehicle when it left, surely though, honest people would happily show their bikes off.

Would a touch of mineral oil ease it in?

Is the parking just open then? Strange that event organisers don't check who is coming and going during the event.

Surely having some sort of ID ticket that is matched to the bikes going in and out would help. It would slow things down a bit but would increase security

It's for XT calipers, I'll crack out the ruler and measure the thread properly.

Just wanted to check and make sure it was M6.

    What size frame?

Winstanley had some 2008/9 female marins in for ~350 quid

My missus is all of 4'11" and finding a bike was a nightmare.

Giant Boulder 12.5" just wasn't right and even with the shop offering to change stems, bars etc, it just was too much of a chew on.

Specialized Myka was a really good fit, but the only 13" we found got sold, and then the wait was until end of May for one.

She eventually got a Trek Skye S – it has a dropped cross bar,but it fitted her first time, no messing about, at 13" it's light enough for her to lug up and down the stairs into ours.

300 quid discounted from 325 – if you go up the spec I think it was 390ish for the Skye SL that had disc brakes.

I know it's not really that cool and off-roady, but it does what she wanted it to do.

Even had it around the Chopwell rollercoaster (parts of it) although I got knacked for taking her on it, it wasn't quite the nice ride around the woods she was expecting.

The Cycle Centre on shields road were really good when my wife was looking for a bike, so good in fact that we bought her bike there.

The Bicycle Repair Man in Prudhoe came up second for us, he would have got the sale, but she just didn't like the Giant Boulder even though it 50 quid cheaper (grumble grumble), they were excellent with her though, offered lots of suggestions on how to get the bike to fit her better, changing bars, tyres, seats adjusting brake reach etc.

Steels – nice fellow, not much stock
EBC – won't shop there again, didn't like the staff, not a patch on Hardisty cycle's of old.
Ride – nice people, tried hard to help, but no bikes in the right size for her.
Evans – ignored us for 10 minutes as we looked at bikes and then couldn't be bothered to help when we asked.
