fair point, i guess i meant that those who see the ethical stance as being purely a marketing tool are often seemingly (and cynically) implying that they don’t believe it to be true… but yes, you’re right.

some people like howies. the clothes and the ethics (or the marketing, if you’re the cynical sort).
    some don’t.

that’s all there is to it really.

Also in Chorlton you’ve the amazing Barbacan Polish bakery, the prize winning vegetariam supermarket over the road and then the mindblowingly wonderful place The Bar on Wilbraham Road

ha, i regularly visit all 3 places!

aye, today was cabbage, dhal and aloo gobi… with a liberal covering of chopped chillies, fresh coriander and onion to get the dhal just how i like it! top stuff.

where you can easily eat for less than a tenner.

ha, rice and 3 veg (a big plate of 3 different veggie curries with a massive pile of pilau rice) in this’n’that costs 3 quid!
    up yours, lahndan!

i had a curry at lunchtime with my ex (who is my best friend anyway), bought some bargain le creuset kitchen stuff in tk maxx then made socca (chickpea flour pancakes topped with caramelized onions and roasted cherry tomatoes) for our dinner… we never did anything ‘special’ on this day when we were together anyway so it was just like a regular saturday really…

rusty mate, the rice was bob on in this n that at lunchtime today… i’ve not noticed any drop in standards there, mind you i only go every few weeks at most.

don’t bother with the curry mile.
any of the northern quarter back alley curry cafes, in particular “this n that”, will see you getting curries far superior to anything you’ll find in rusholme (on the regular menus, that is)… also, asian fusion in chorlton is pretty awesome, as is coriander (also in chorlton; both of them on barlow moor road). nothing like the identikit curry mile slop you get in pretty much all of the neon signed nightmares on wilmslow road…

ha, no really iain, early impressions lead me to say they’re pretty awesome jackets so hopefully you’ll not get a beating whilst wearing it!

i’m yet to properly read it.
got it last week, looked at the pictures, glanced at some of the bonking tales, read the altura jacket review (and subsequently bought one as i’d been umming and ahhing about it for months!) then put it down on the coffee table… but yeah, so far i’d have to agree that it looks like a good one.

peter, i got an altura attack extreme last week from this place:

    discount cycles direct

cheapest i could find at just under 90 quid. ordered one lunchtime, arrived the following morning. great.
they only have small or large left now though…

if i learn VBA for Access, i could get a 10 grand payrise. is it worth it?

if you install outlook as well though, then use that to open the pst file first, you can go file>import>messages>ms outlook in windows mail and it apparently works.
    never done it myself though…

turn your engine on, turn the heater on and use a window scraper with a bit of effort behind it.
you don’t need water or de-icer or anything. usually just makes it harder, IME.

i’d suggest that the best way around it would be to downgrade your new laptop OS to XP from vista!
but that’s probably not practical for you; one way of doing it is to install a 30 day trial version of outlook on your vista machine, copy the pst file over, open it with outlook and then import it in windows mail…

i managed to pick up a trangia with the optional gas burner extra for the bargain price of 20 quid in tk maxx last year. it’s fantastic; no complaints at all about cooking times etc.

my first one was the michael schenker group assault attack 1982.
it’s long gone now though, sadly.

earliest one i still have is probably the anthrax among the living tour phase 2 from 1987, with judge death on the front… and i have a nuclear assault tour shirt from 1988 that has this weird radioactive skull thing on it, with an extra eye drawn on in marker pen by james hetfield.

hmm… righto, so that’s good actually as i can get the tv stand i want and also the smaller one for my hi-fi, so they’ll match…
    i think i may have a winner.
    cheers fellas!

They’re also lovely people to do business with.

    too right.
spot on there too binners… it seems that it’s always the same people on here who appear to have serious issues with howies, when really it’s not that hard to just ignore the company if their way of doing things offends you that much.

i’d assumed superfi would be well out of my price range… hmm.
ikea… i’m planning on getting a lack low tv stand anyway so that might be an option actually.

the cheapest hi-fi rack richer sounds appear to have these days is about £100, and those AV ones are really a bit too wide for hi-fi stuff.
annoyingly, argos appears to be the best bet…

juan, howies have used both hemp and bamboo in some of their garments.

bamboo has its own issues though, as its increasing popularity is having a bit of a negative affect on the biodiversity in china (farmers are growing more bamboo in an attempt to ‘cash in’, at the expense of other crops).

Did he have to go? No. So its not saving any ‘carbon’ is it?

i dunno, on the one had they get grief from people for having stuff made in china (the usual “so just how ethically produced are your jeans then” type stuff), so when they decide to send someone over there to inspect (and presumably report back) they get even more grief.

i just think it’s a bit sad really; when all’s said and done they’re doing more than most other clothing companies to be as ‘good’ as they can, but i guess whatever they do they can’t win with most people…

and yeah, i like them. i have quite a few of their clothes. i’m quite happy with that. doesn’t really matter to me what anyone else thinks of me for it!

well i’ve got my hands on an old laptop and i’m in the process of doing my first ubuntu install on it, with a view to learning how to use that.
also i discussed learning SQL with my boss so that i can diversify, and since my current job pretty much covers all the A+ certification requirements then i’m gonna sit the exams and get certified…
so that’ll be a means of having an income secured (as much as anyone could claim that in the current economic climate i suppose), so i’ll have my rent and bills covered.
spoke to her a couple of times over the last couple of days- she’s viewing a couple of flats nearby later today as she doesn’t want to move away from the area but she just wants to live on her own.
i’m taking things as they come, but i won’t allow her to take advantage or anything. she wants to remain friends as she says she’s not planning on entering into any other relationships at all, she just needs some alone time to figure out who she is. fair enough.
so, we’ll see. it’s not going to be easy though.

    i’m in manchester.
whilst nothing has changed, we’ve talked a bit today and i feel a bit better about it. we will still be friends; no point in being an arse just for the sake of it. it’ll only make things more difficult and it won’t make me any happier.
we’re just gonna move forward and take things as they come. see how it all turns out. if anything, it’s given me the impetus to actually take steps to further my career (get some IT certification, get more £££, get cytech stuff and seriously look into opening a bike shop)…

nearest ones are withington cycles, bike doctor (in rusholme) and edinburgh bike co-op (other end of the curry mile)…

    so, no! ha!

    thanks mate.
my riding buddy came round last night and that was good, we chatted about stuff. he’s gonna help me out with increasing my skillset workwise (IT stuff, he bluffed his way into an SQL DBA role having zero experience of it beforehand so i reckon i can pick it up pretty easily too) and we also talked semi-seriously about opening our own bike shop…

    thanks.
one problem is that my household income has noe been halved, meaning that i pretty much can’t afford to go out ever. i think i can barely afford to cover rent and bills. i’m pretty much screwed.
