use a lowe one – meant for cameras – and used it when I originally mountain biked – 20 years ago. It fits gel bars, drink (small), tube, repair kit, phone, car keys, tools, tyre levers – and is still pretty small. Slips round to front for access, rear for rising. Has wide straps so doesn’t pull to much, but it probably compresses my waist more than a camelbak or other would. essentially, it’s fine.

However, I’m going to get a Camelbak – will take a bit more for days in the hills, easier to drink from on the go (and I need to do that more) – but I’m getting a Charge LR – has a lumbar reservoir so the water and weight is low down around the waist – it seems much more sensible for mountain biking than carrying it higher on the back, and I’m used to the waist weight.

So, make a convincing case as to why it should be free from the OS? (am serious – I’m going to visit them soon to discuss freeing up their data, and having an mtb set of arguments would be good).

Woody, think it depends which you get: mine were £20, mrs £19…..

supposedly a better ride quality too – less of the harshness of aluminium, it damps out the worst. I can’t comment, as I’ve only had steel and carbon bikes – but with weight, strength, rigidity, ride quality, and so on it made the decision for me. Just had to find a decent deal to be able to afford it – was looking at the new Zesty since it became full carbon but found a great deal on my preferred bike – Ibis Mojo.

got some on my mojo – not exactly by choice, just grabbed the first pair of pedals at a sensible price I could find, before I really read up on stuff – think mine are Electron, and they’ve been tough, reliable and look good. Had them on all winter, and they’re fine.

thanks bigsi, though the fs will stay :-) far too nice and so much fun.

about £1k was what I’d guessed it would cost to make up. Makes the £1250 from Canyon seem good value (as ever).

don’t need it, but no bikes =n+1 and all that…..

will look into the Kona ones. Seems the modern geometry is more sorted – guess one answer is to cost up separate kit from Rose, CRC etc. and maybe an on-one frame…..

blimey. I’ve got a 970 original, plus upgraded shifters (XT) and didn’t reckon it was worth more than £40, after checking ebay etc…..

@singlespeedstu – longer days in the saddle cross-country on real terrain, plus the odd dash around the local trail centres. Got bad lower back so won’t be jumping and dropping major stuff on it; mooching along greens and fc tracks with the family – general purpose; not racing…..

so why not small claims court? Can do it online, no need for lawyers, and it’s designed exactly to address this. And if he ignores the small claims, you can send bailiffs round (also online) to execute the judgement – did it once to some company that owed me money; well worth it :-) You not only get financial recompense, but a lot of satisfaction, both n getting it sorted and in giving him appropriate grief. Of course, he has a right to defend himself, which could make for an interesting hearing if he decides to…..

Bishop’s Wood – new area to me – nw of Stafford – muddy, wet, singletrack with brambles across, but fun. got mildly lost when the track was diverted onto the road for half a mile, but not working from memory and no map may have contributed to that. Sandy grinding paste, hail, and whistling wind howling through the bare hedges made it less fun for a bit, but then the sun came out for the final blast down the fc track and singletrack back to the car. Frozen hands from washing the bike at home, but great hot shower, and dozed in front of the recorded rugby afterwards. Good afternoon out.

Xcentric, is that a route from stw or your local stomping ground ..?

It’s about 10 miles from where I live, and it looked quite good on the map, hence the exploring. Think it would be ok in the summer for a whizz around. Bit closer than Cannock Chase – trails or forest – and completely deserted. Saw one other bike track, very faint, in the mud, so it’s not a much-used area. Fun, and some steep bits, but not overly challenging. Great light through the trees at times, though, so pretty.

and for about £2k you can buy a complete Canyon bike with XTR (groupset, anyway)….. swap the XTR to your current, move the current to the Canyon, sell the Canyon on – or use it as a winter bike…..

the travel superzooms have recently been updated (Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, etc) – so the previous models are available for approx £150, possibly less. Good quality in standard light, flexible zoom range, very compact and reasonably tough. Ideal biking camera if you’re into biking, not photography…..

maybe we’re all too gadget-obsessed? why do you need a larger sensor? Ok, if you are shooting in low light, and printing quite large, it makes a noticeable difference – but for 95% of the time, I’d expect that a compact would do. And then it is all about having it with you and accessible, rather than in the car…. I’d take the DSL with a 17-40 /35-70 or 50mm prime if you want decent photos in challenging conditions, and put up with the size, and something like a G9 or any of the travel compacts for the rest of the time…..

checked this recently. M&S t&c’s changed recently so much less good for bikes over (iirc) £1k, possibly £2k – they may not even cover them. Co-op would have been fine (with house insurance) but since I couldn’t say when my house was built, no go.

NFU came up best – great house insurance policy, plus bikes covered, all for 60% less than previous household policy…..

not tried protectyourbubble but some claim they are a pain to claim off – think there was a recent thread on here about it too…. but they may be fine, we all have some bad experiences…..

<edit – ouch – protectyourbubble comes to almost half what I currently pay for house, contents and bike, for bike alone……>

Just got the V8 copy for mrs xcentric – excellent pedals, look good, and if you want to upgrade later, they’re a good spare set. And you’ve not lost much if you really don’t like them.

I used to go with one-on-head-one-on-bars. Then I got an MJ-872, which is just a little more expensive than buying 2 cheaper Magicshines but when headmounted is far more effective than that.

Interested to know why it’s more effective? Beam pattern? Neater?

for many of their bikes, the kit is worth the price of the bike – they are great value. All the ones I’ve seen out are well finished – you need to decide if you like their looks, and can manage without buying from a lbs. But most decent lbs’s will look after it for you anyway, so it’s not such an issue. Main thing is sizing, but you could always sit in a mtb cafe and chat to Canyon owners to get a sit on to see…..

    confirmed 30.9 only
    (if in stock at all)

have chatted to them – it’s a 2012 model, no bleed kit, and available in 380 and 420mm lengths. think it’s only 30.9 though. Right hand lever. 125 mm travel.
pity, as I want a 31.6 and shimming it for the length is not ideal…..

except you then have to post them back to Germany to get any warranty work done if it’s needed, unless you have a very friendly lbs.

great bike choice. But I’m biased as I have one, and I love it. But mine replaced a fully rigid Trek, so almost anything would have been an upgrade :-) But it does flow well, I find. Oh, and their customer service is second to none.

@larrystumbles – those are the 2011 model, and whilst cheaper, are less well sealed and then you have to buy a bleed kit too…..

@honourablegeorge – Rose’s ones have been the earlier versions, which have had a few more issues with them, so am after the later ones – but the price is really good when they have them in.

thanks for the crc codes – are these all £10 off?

    weird.

    first, there aren’t “industry-standard” questions.

second, there are a lot of ethical issues involved in asking people about sexuality and other activities, and getting informed consent from people before you start, and you seem to have missed this…..

also, any questionnaire allows for a range of answers, not black or white perspectives – only poorly-designed ones that try to push a particular perspective have these.

I suspect your coursework is actually asking you to question this methodology and approach. If you were at the University I work at (and sit on the ethics committee of) the you’d get a poor mark from blindly following instructions in the face of so many obvious issues.
