will look into it being actually cheaper from .de, but for me c2w works out at a significant saving (~42%) so it’s worthwhile – and I’ve looked into it reasonably carefully…..

The c2w schem we have gives us a £1k voucher to use, so should be fine as long as the shop makes out the invoice for the value of the voucher, or more.

    happy to be overbiked :-)
like the look and spec of the Cube, but can’t find a 2012 in my size…..
Canyon are the obvious choice but no c2w, ditto s/h, sorry…..

got dodgy back and so was probably planning on starting with front suspension. Used to ride a fully rigid Trek all over and down the mountains, but was younger then.

    On-One don’t take c2w vouchers, unfortunately…..

CX I’d considered, but I really don’t want to focus on the road, and having something that may be usable as an alternative mtb for certain days is probably a better bet for me. And, tbh, the look of CX vbikes doesn’t really do it for me…..

congrats GregMay – look forward to reading it….

actually, it’s not going to be me – I’m not Brian and not in Dublin :-)

But one piece of advice – it’s a thesis *defence*, so there’ll be bit that you need to fight back on, and bits that will test you to beyond breaking – and both those scenarios are ok. Good luck.

loads of threads and reviews and stuff on here.

After lots of reading and angst decided that the first light I’d get wouldn’t be the luminator, which seems excellent value and quality, and would be a bit cheaper – but decided the chinese ones off ebay were slightly too much risk. So just bought the candbseen 1200 light – excellent build quality, bright light, and good value. Got two torches too – one zoomable and one standard, one of which I’ll give to someone for Christmas and keep the other one. All good quality, with UK warranty and backup. Seemed a great price/performance/longevity/quality balance point to me.

surely a heavy bike gets you fitter, so the heavier the better is the best bet for winter fitness? Sure, if you’re heading off over mountains on an all-day epic, take your 4-figure dream machine, but for a pootle to the pub or shops on a grotty winter’s day, the heavy bike will keep you in shape better….

would have thought it’s an ideal opportunity to try out a few bikes (Mojo, S-Works – all those listed above) and then pick up the best one for you second-hand. Ride it like mad on some similar trails beforehand, and if it’s better than your current bike, train and use that – then when you’re back, have both for a few months and sell the one you don’t use. Shouldn’t cost much at all, esp compared to the opportunity you have….. Same goes for your wife’s bike too…..

NFU are worth checking out too, esp if you want home & contents cover. Bike covered with no hassle (Mojo) and less than half price of previous insurer.

I know about both the porsche official solution – expensive and no longer made – and the bird automotive one – expensive, and probably no longer made…..

so no-one has used a Saris Bones on a Boxster, it seems? will have to try and see I guess :-)

op – as others have said, sounds like poor wood – easy to check…..

may be chimney is too low so you’re not getting a good draw on the fire – this was the problem in our old house and a trip to the roof soon fixed that – made a vast difference.

charlie, others – am assuming the fan sits on the stove top – does it look aesthetically fine, or a bit odd? silent in use?

went through them all recently – gone with NFU for home insurance which covers bikes (~£2-4k), cheaper than previous home insurer.

CoOp would have been good. M&S limit for new customers is now £1k.

    GF – what’s that? :D

(not that it really helps, but I have a Mojo and it’s a great do-it-all bike: light, fast, great downhill.)

Camelbak Charge LR – low reservoir for stablity and space in the top part of the rucksac. Wide mouth to bladder for easy fill plus good hose and bite valve. I can get basic tools, inner tube, light waterproof and softshell (just) in the pack, plus camera and phone in side pocket, and chocolate. Would be tight, but doable, for a full day out. Good, light, well-made product, happy with mine. Colour matches my bike, too :-)

glad you’re ok. Did a ride over Dartmoor a couple of weeks ago. Even the fast descent on rocky rutted track fine, until I came to a closed gate with short drop after it. No problems stopping for the gate, but rather than open it, wheel bike through, close it and then set off, convinced myself that I could get through, gravity closing the gate, get balanced and drop down the largish step, and be fine, all without dismounting. All true, except the be fine – got through the gate, gravity closed it, went down the largish step, and dived headlong over the bars. Hit the ground hard, especially with my right hand around the base of my thumb. Thankfully only 200 m back to car, but couldn’t move it at all. Mrs Xcentric is an A&E doc so no sympathy or trip to hospital needed, but still can’t hold handlebars as bruising is deep and painful. So, whilst I agree it doesn’t always hurt, it can sometimes….

road bike is not really an option for me – roads round here are either full of heavy lorries rushing past, or windy lanes with not too much room for a bike and a car – and I don’t fancy getting knocked off. Love them as pieces of engineering beauty, but it’s not for me. (Also did it as a kid and found I was either bored, or knackered – it just doesn’t float my boat).

Cannock was ok the first time I did it, and since then has been okay too, so it’s probably just the initial steep stuff when not so warmed up that kill me – should try and find some mellower starts to my rides, I suspect. Running is a good idea, but a knackered lower back means it’s not ideal for me. Got a trainer-type thing that I’ll stick my old rigid Trek on and try it a few times a week in front of the t.v. and see if that helps too.

Have the standard Mojo, and you’ll have great fun. Just ride it as hard as you like, and enjoy it. It’ll take whatever you throw at it, and if not Ibis customer service is indeed excellent – emails from the MD on a Sunday are not uncommon…..

can’t advise on your main issue, though, I’m afraid, but it’ll certainly cope with anything in the UK, and almost certainly the Alps too. I’d only start having doubts when considering clearing small buildings in a single bound :-)

one q for all the enthusiastic customers out there – or jedi – how fit do you need to be. Am getting back into biking, and need to up my skills for sure – but am unfit. Should I get fit first, then go, or go anyway. Concerned that I’ll have had it after an hour :-)

similar situation a few months ago. Much cheaper to get it with house and contents policy. Good ones that were on my final shortlist were M&S, Co-op, and NFU. Slightly different terms and so and, and ymmv so check out what suits you best. E.g. co-op would have been best for me but needed date of house build (!!) which I cundn’t give them. NFU, with bikes, and house and contents, we 1/3 what I’d previously been paying for house insurance only 8O so a great deal overall.

or they have a 514 available now, and offer up to 36 months interest free credit.

I don’t work for them and didn’t buy from them in the end, but they were great and helpful on the phone numerous times when i was close to buying a 514/714, and offered me a great deal on a 914 too…..

Do try to negotiate down from full retail though :-)

was going to buy a Zesty 714 then tried a Pivot Mach 5.7 (alu version) and whilst only around a car park (with some decent curbs in :-)) the DW link suspension was a revelation – lots of immediate surge forwards under power. Then found a Mojo (standard) at a great price and went for that, and love it – DW link excellent again, light and nimble. So, I’d happily have either of them. Not tried the Yeti.

In your position, with a great bike already, I’d want ot ride others for at elast half a day on decent (and typical for you) riding trails, before I got rid of something I liked for something ‘new’ – it won’t be ‘new’ for long, and so also needs to be better, else this could get expensive…..
