Stans notubes sealant is what you want (or similar)

Also – is the rim sealed? i.e does it have proper tubeless rim tape or just the bog standard rim strip that comes with regular wheels?

do just as Stimpy says. Make sure not to cover over 40 PSI – unless you want to cover yourself and the surrounding area in latex sealant. (been there done that)

My Stumpy was doing this, I tracked it down to the suspension linkage, took apart packed with grease and the noise has gone.

Oddly it didn’t sound like it was the linkage as the noise reverberated through the frame.

I used the plastic version for hanging a heavy mirror, hasn’t budged in 4 years.

Also, I’m fairly sure I drilled mine at an angle downwards into the wall (will probably be told that is the wrong thing to do…)

Troutie is the good price £250 as per your website?

I’m torn – I love the all in one simplicity of my Maxx-D but would like something a bit brighter and wider beam (I’m never happy and always want more

How does the Troutie DD compare to the Exposure Six Pack or Maxx-D does it have a brighter and wider beam pattern?

My max speed on both a MTB and road bike is around 50MPH, I regularly see over 40MPH however I’m now the wrong side of 30 and find myself often thinking “what if”… someone pulls out, an animal jumps out, my tubeless fails etc etc.

I feel a lot safer descending fast on my MTB rather than road bike – maybe its the bigger tyres and brakes but on both bikes my bottle for top speed has gone.

I had in the back of my mind that the apple store charges £50 for a screen and £100 for a replacement handset seems reasonable to me.

Cleeve is my regular ride – I’ve ridden there both today and yesterday, I have to say I was amazed with how hard the ground is and at the lack of puddles.

Some of the routes off the hill are a tad more challenging at the moment as the storm water has washed away some of the stones and exposed the rock beneath them but it’s all good.

As for GPS routes its more of a case of follow you nose and remembering to turn at a certain bush etc.

There is plenty to explore up there, put a post on here next time you are visiting and I’m sure you’ll have plenty of volunteers to show you around.

Thanks All – first port of call this morning is my LBS for the nut, failing that it will be “all-in” on another new mech as the sun is shining and I want to ride!

I have the stock SJ setup – Purgatory upfront and Captain on the rear, I run them tubeless and find the combination to work well (although to be honest I stick with what ever comes on a bike and replace them with like for like when they wear out so have nothing to compare them to)

I’ve done something very similar – I bought a pair with the maxle lowers from eBay – by the time I sold the other forks it cost circa £60.

Yep – my LBS rang Specialized and ordered it… the label on the bag says “Spec DMD Mount” and the barcode number is 91596813 (not sure if this is LBS or Spesh barcode)

I’ve got the Deores and am very impressed with power, and seem to enough modulation and the fact that they are about £35 per brake from Germany makes them a bargain!

Brake levers are very short and feels right to have mine in the same place against the grips

I had the same problem after replacing pads a few months ago and attempted to bleed the rear brake and ended up with mush (the front was perfect)

The issue was cause by the lack of height difference between the lever and caliper. I had a moment of insipration and hung the bike on a hook by the front wheel, repositioned the lever and bled it as per the Avid procedure – hey presto one rock solid brake that no longer went to mush when the bike was inverted.

Also – make sure you reset the pad spacing as per the Avid instructions (install pads, squeeze lever until they are a few mm apart and then insert the pad spacer between the pads to set the gap)

Like I said once I followed this procedure I ended up with perfect brakes. The draw back of Avid is that they require regularly maintenance to keep them tip top, something that I’m too lazy to do hence going for the new Shimanos. In fairness to the Avids though once they are setup properly they are very powerful.

is it the front or the rear brake?

I’ve now got mine setup the same as the Nomad above and placed the shifter inboard of the reverb. I swapped the left and right shifter brackets (SLX) which has allowed the shifter to be placed perfectly under the brake lever.

In time I’ll probably go for the new generation of SLX I-SPEC shifters to tidy the bars up but for the timebeing it functions really well.

what DanCake said… after two BBs on my GXP I went for a Deore HT crankset and BB from Bike Discount De – was less than £50.

I’ve ordered mine from Bike24, around the 80 euro mark.

All you need is a pair of Hope Tech 2 matchmakers (they are available in black and silver), a file and a drill.

The holes don’t quite align properly so you’ll need to elongate the holes, its a bit of trial and error – when doing up the bolts if there is too much resistance elongate the holes further.

I used the bolts that came with the matchmakers as they have a bigger head than the Avid bolts and hide where the paint has been filed away.

I was always told not to use a pressure washer as the water is easily forced by bearing seals (forks, wheels, headset, BBs etc)

+1 for the specialized airtool, had mine for a few years and works well.

Well I took the plunge and very happy with my sub £50 Deore crankset (Bike Discount De)

If anyone else is looking at getting a M590 crankset I really recommend it for value for money.

Schnor – thanks, that bracket is exactly what I’m after. I will email Spesh to get the part number

Ok – understood, thanks for the clarification; I did think it strange when the fella in the bikeshop told me they wouldn’t fit (but foolishly) I believed an “expert”

On the plus side following the bleed yesterday and resetting the bite point the Elixirs feel like they are new, here’s hoping they stay like that for at least one or two rides.

Next time the Elixirs fail I’m going for either Deore or SLX as looking after the Elixirs is too much like hard work.

Assuming the Elixirs are having a good day which feel better to you the Deore’s or the Elixirs?

When using the Avid mounts have you done away with the cone washers and do you the bolt the caliper directly into the mount without any spacers?

    wurzelcube
    Free Member

I had originally assume I could run new brakes with my existing Avid mounts and rotors but was told that will not work so my Elixirs are on their last chance as I’ve re-bled the rear brake, this time with the bike hanging on a hook to help the air escape, but failing this I will be going for the Shimanos.

I had a squidge on the Shimanos in the LBS and was really impressed with the lever feel, the Deore M596 look excellent value for money also and as far as I could tell similar to the M666 but without ice fin pads and a reach adjust thumb screw.

Aside from the bleeding / maintenance aspects how does the stopping power compare? Is there a significant difference in the “throw-me-over-the-handle-bar” ability?

For what it’s worth whilst I only have the Revelation RLs I think they are the best fork I’ve owned / ridden. Very plush and soak up everything without fuss.

The last two bikes I owned had Fox forks (only the open bath versions), the Revelations blow these away.

I’m a Project Manager in the outsourcing space – mostly infrastructure and transformation projects.

The package is likely to be somewhere around 30K (it may not seem like much to some but being offered a year’s net salary is very appealing, particuarly as I’m 31 with a very long way until retirement). We could survive on my Fiancee’s salary but it would make things tight until I find another job (the aim of the game is to save the redundancy payment and use it in time to buy a bigger house)

Aside from the well know websites (Jobsite, Jobserve, Monster, CW Jobs etc) are there any other good job boards on the web that anyone has had success with?

I can see the next few days being spent looking for roles in Brum, Bris’ol and the surrounding areas, moving to London isn’t an option due to my other half’s job I’m firmly planted in the midlands.

    Er, I don’t get it.

With the Hayes mount you just pull the brake on full and then tighten the mount bolts? That gets it straight…….

+1… I’ve always used this method and works a treat on my Avids, Shimano, Hayes etc…

I think the race and tech brackets are different – from the research I did I read that the race brackets are not suitable for use with the Avid brakes.

I used the tech brackets and elongated the holes – Hope make a black version of the tech bracket, I got mine from Cycle Sports UK
