This happened to myself.
Flat next door ,ground level, had burst pipe.Flat was being renovated and I didn`t have any contact with owner.
I phoned cops to tell them that I was going to break in to turn it off and although I wasn`t getting their approval I was nether getting disapproval so I broke in and turned it off as the damage to my property would have been disasterous.

TBH I think your battery has died as even a frozen engine would make a noise/click when starter is engaged.
Batteries die in the cold if they are poorly.

Used socks ,WeissSocks ,today and they are excellent (18″ snow).
Easy to fit and are lasting the pace even using on cleared roads ,I think cheap ones tend to disintegrate.
Used chains before and they are the best for truly awful conditions but take a little longer to fit and the rumble of them on hard surface isn`t the best.Socks are carp on ice whereas chains excel.
So snow socks for Britain and snow chains for the Alps etc.

Done it the opposite way.
Pick your time wisely as midge season is horrendous in Uist and rain is usually horizontal.
When I done it ,early June, it was perfect weather and I travelled on my old Marin mountain bike with rear rack and minimal gear to carry.
Would love to do it again.

Even if serial no. isn`t visible it can sometimes be read as it is deeper than the actual number itself by use of a dye or is it acid ? which police use to check cars etc.
Also it may have datatag or the likes.

Sell it on VW/golf related site or on ebay.
The mk3 16v are wanted for engines and some other parts so worth something to someone.
Other than that fix the fecker and sell it on.

Just fit the tyres as they are not a modification but just a change of tyres.
The difference between winter and summer tyres is quite significant tbh.This video should enlighten the skeptics.

Some like to do it as a figure of eight across string road.
As said tailwind on west side would be the preference though.

This happened to me once whilst my car was in my driveway.
The car blocking was parked with its wheels pointing outwards from kerb so I managed to push the car,handbrake wasn`t fully on, so that it was away from my drive but it was now parked across the road blocking it entirely.

I currently own my second 16v and the first one I had for about seven years which ran faultlessly but was starting to get rusty at the edges and my second which I have had for about six years is a collection of parts from the first and all the better models.
Oak green ,big bumper with G60 brakes,G60 leather door cards,Mk3 recaros fitted and chromolux tinted windows.
Rust will be the main thing to be aware of as mechanics are cheap and easy to replace and there are several usual suspects to look out for that has been mentioned already.

Top Gear showed this years ago with a drag race of a new and 60K mile MK2 golf gti 16v. The 60K miler was a fair bit faster. I’m sure it’s on you tube.

It was a Mk1 Golf btw and the owner later admitted that the car wasn`t as standard as he claimed,reworked head iirc,the same car has done the rounds of every car programme and has the dullest geekiest owner of any car that I have had the displeasure of meeting.
My opinion is that a car will gain slightly after a period but will start to lose as wear overtakes.Blueprint engines are a good example of a looser engine in some cases.
