I do both but having skied first I’ve never felt truly ‘comfortable’ on a board despite having boarded for 10+ years. I think that might be the same in reverse although it could be that it’s a case of 2 edges are better than one + it feels more natural for me to be facing ‘ahead’ rather than ‘side-on’.
As you have very limited time on a board it’s probably worth giving skiing a try to see how you get on. Both are very satisfying in their own way and as oldbloke says ^^ boards are fantastic in powder if you can get it !

Edit: should have added that modern skis are very forgiving, so the learning curve will be very quick as you already know how to turn and use an edge.

The hate on display by some on this site makes me feel very sad and disappointed.

It does seem to go beyond good natured banter/rivalry. Odd that some of the more ‘hate filled’ comments come from a few who bend over backwards to be oh so PC in other areas. Pathetic really !

There are 2 ‘proper’ pubs and a bar/restaurant within easy walking distance of my house, which is in a small’ish village. I rarely drink in any of the pubs as I’m not keen on the clientele of one and the other has gone seriously downhill recently, due largely (IMO) to a very greedy brewery and appears to rely on televised football and an previous reputation for good food.

The bar/restaurant on the other hand is brilliant. Restaurant tucked away at the back, meat sourced and prepared by the co-owner who happens to be a butcher, nice courtyard and even nicer huge beer garden and a minimum 3 local real ales at the pumps at £2.70-£2.80 a pint. Clientele is from all walks of life and all very friendly. It’s ace :D

Both parties at fault, however the biker would still be alive if he wasn’t speeding.

Came into this a bit late but the statement above is not true I’m afraid. I attended a very similar incident last year (bike had just overtaken car) where the biker was almost certainly doing <60 mph on a quiet country road but he outcome was the same.

It was one of the reasons I got rid of my bike this year as I had that constant nagging feeling that one day my luck would run out despite riding very defensively. It’s been pointed out already that a quick blat on the throttle can take you to very high speed and on public roads it’s only a matter of time before the inevitable happens.

FWIW there is no way would I have been doing that speed at that point on a bike.

I wonder if there were any ambulances ‘scrambled’………….

New neighbours started renovating a couple of weeks ago. Nice young couple, who had the decency to come round and introduce themselves and let us know that there was going to be some noise and they would need access via our back garden. Not a problem as it’s in the deeds but I did ask then to give us a knock to let us know so we could get the dogs in the house.

A couple of weeks later when the main work started, unannounced, I heard a commotion in the back garden and went out to find a scaffolder, white faced in the back garden pinned against the fence by three very ‘defensive’ dogs. He knocked after that

Other than that they appear to have removed and rebuilt every internal wall and the noise has been huge but have restricted it to 0800-2000 Monday to Saturday, which I think is entirely reasonable. As has been pointed out above, the sooner the work is completed, the sooner peace is restored!

Edit: in answer to the OP – 0735 is a bit early but ok on a Saturday IMO, if they do it tomorrow I wouldn’t be happy!

I feel the guy in the pics pain.

I was at the OD gig in Sunderland and cursed myself for forgetting to take earplugs. The only positive thing was being paid to be there !

Missed the other thread and glad to here things seem to have gone well.

Look forward to seeing you back on here and back on a bike soon. There are fewer and fewer names on here from the ‘good old days’ so all the best for a full and speedy recovery

Got my old Saab back from the garage after 2 days while the owner tried to sort out steering vibration and auto box not being ‘quite right’!

He’d resealed and balanced a wheel, swapped the backs to the front and had the gearbox open to double check all was ok before changing the oil………………. That’ll be £23 please :D

As ^^ it really is a matter of personal taste. I’m still searching for a juice which I’m happy with all day but the problem is that taste/hit requirements vary so much (for me at least) from morning to night.

I really like the DV stuff and am using an apple pie flavour (60%+ PG on 18mg) this morning via a carto, which seems to give a smoother but still satisfying draw and is quite different to the same juice in my usual Protank 3.

The Argos Dyson lookalike at £40 is exceptional value.
CBA to google it, but 3 people I knwo bought one and reckon they’re great.

Bought one last month and despite it looking like a kids toy,it works really well. I got the ‘pet hair’ version and at 1/5 the cost of a Dyson (I’ve had 3) it’s a bargain!

That’s useful inbred456. Current car estate is Saab 9-5 estate which I bought at £1.5-2k cheaper than the equivalent diesel version. That buys an awful lot of fuel and some of the repair costs on diesels are pretty scary.

It towed the caravan for the first time last week and one of the reasons I’m looking to change was the 21 mpg on trip to The Lakes. Some of the figures on a big diesel engine don’t seem much better!

Cheers guys. Anything else I should be looking at around the £5-6k mark?

Thanks all. Some of those repair bills for relatively minor issues are horrifying!

I’ll have a look at the x-trail but a guy at work had his turbo go when it was just out of warranty – I’ll check what engine it was but he swore he wouldn’t buy another.

Kia Sorrento and Hyundai Santa Fe look ok and I suppose a sorted Freelander (is there such a thing 7 or 8 years old) is a possibility. My Father in Law has a ’11 model and hasn’t had any trouble but the one before that was never out if the garage!

Hmmmm will have to check out the CRV and X-Trail too I suppose and have a trawl through the various threads on here again.

Anyone got anything positive about them or other options?

    Cheers

Still VAG AFAIK. Model I’ll be looking at is 06-08.

Surprised at that Bregante as the reviews I’ve read have been pretty good. I was also considering a Disco but the reviews/problems with those are horrifying and mpg isn’t as good.

Lol very funny thread. I haven’t looked at the bike forum for ages and after the first few replies thought I must be waaaaay out of touch haha.

I’ve just built up an Armadillo and it’s great fun…… even with 26″ wheels !

Cheers Mark pics will follow >>>>>>> over there, just been busy ;)

    I like mine – 9-5 petrol estate 170 bhp.

Ver comfy, reasonable turn of speed, 27-37 mpg. Huge space for the dogs.

Turbo went at 96k and recon unit was only £110 which was fine as the car cost next to nothing to buy. Service history is important and main problems seem to be sludge in sump from people putting in wrong oil. I would definitely have another one,

The best he’s done in recent decades was Mrs Brown imo, he was absolutely excellent in that.

i have it on good authority that the staff and cast were in stitches during the whole shoot.

Very funny guy and his ‘travel shows’ showed a warmth and generosity of spirit which was obvious by the genuine affection shown by his friends and acquaintances around the world.

    Damn fine banjo player too!

    Really…… 2 years!

Several colleagues have had it done and been very happy with the results. One of them had his done at least 8 years ago and is still happy with the results and no need for specs/lenses.

I mostly use the same set-up except with the Protank 3. Works great.

Rossi’s racecraft is the thing keeping him up there

There is no doubt it is helping but having seen most of the races this year I can’t see how anyone one can say he’s lost his edge or desire.

I think too much is put down to his age and he is racing as well as ever and in fairness to him (and all the others trailing in his wake) Marquez appears to be something truly special !

Is there a UK stockist of the Alice juice?

I’m really struggling due to problems with harsh throat hit after a while and have tried numerous combinations of juices/strengths/tanks etc. Had some juices from TAFKAS which I found good (especially grape) but faves are a couple from Decadent Vapours as they seem smoother for longer.

Most used kit at the moment is Protank3 (only one I’ve had which hasn’t leaked) with Ego-twist and find the variable voltage makes a massive difference.

Hah! I suspected there may be a bit of ‘them and us’ with motors vs yachts and tbh I’m told old to care – I just want something that suits and provides and interesting way to spend a few days away.

I’m from a long line of trawlermen from Banff and the sea/water has always had a draw. Advice has been great (from both sides of the fence) and I’ll take it on onboard.

    Cheers

Thanks all, particularly TINAS and julians.

It’s a lot to take in but I like the look of that Swift, which is the sort of thing I hoped might be within budget.

Is there a ‘better’ time of year to look to buy? Many of the broker sites I’ve had a look at this week seem to have virtually every boat reduced in price!

I’ve had contacts for a long time and have been using daily disposables from Daysoft ( delivered from Channel Islands at £12 for amonths supply) and they are excellent.

You need a proper prescription, so I would definitely recommend going to an optician until you are confident and know what suits you.

Condensation most likely and one of the reasons I got rid of my tent. 3 x dogs and 2 adults create a lot of it and while it’s ok to keep vents open in decent weather, it’s not good when it’s freezing cold (Lakes in March) and the tent had frozen rock solid!

I’m in Sicily and will be watching it on a big screen by the pool.

There is only one English couple here and lthe others are mostly German, French and Dutch.
I am being given an Italian flag by the barman as I’m Scottish. My missus is English and she is even less interested in the result than me !

Hope it all goes well stox, lovely looking dog.

Not just labradors mind; most pedigree dogs seem to have their inherent faults and their owners expect some other mug to foot the bill.

Who else is footing the bill? You obviously don’t understand how insurance works as most will insist on a hip score and adjust the premium accordingly.

I would hug mine (2 labs and a labradoodle) but I’m in Sicily ;)

One thing I will say- you find the 2.0TDI ‘wanting’? How do you drive it? You know how to ride the torque correctly right?

There you go DrP, a 1/2 hour lesson from driving god Hora and you’ve saved £400

    Woody

That would be brilliant as long as Hora doesn’t want it. I don’t want to upset the sensitive little soul!

I always fancied one but never got round to it when they came out + I like frames that are ‘different’.

I think if you are near Hora the a bait too far away as I’m near Durham. If Hora takes it then he must promise to post a vid of him jumping

I I have a Planet x armadillo frame for free if you want it hora. Make a nice jump bike for you.

    Sorry but

Ps if Hora doesn’t want it for free……… what size is it?

I reckon a number of burly folk will be considerably cheaper

Rather OT but to put that into perspective…………… 2 ambulance staff need to lift that sort of weight and more on a regular basis! And they wonder why so many staff retire early with bad backs!

    Woody

Might not be available to OP but my FiL looked at this for his 3 year old Freelander and found that Land Rover were cheaper and offered better cover than the warranty companies he had quotes from.

No idea if Ford do the same but worth checking out.

If they’d been asleep in the room next door I may have felt some sympathy for them but I don’t.

It’s comments like this that make me despair about the lack of compassion in certain areas of society. Or is it just random STW keyboard knobbery ?

Dammit – just when I was thinking of selling my 9-5 estate you’ve all reminded me what a good car it is, with a paltry 98k on the clock!

I’ve just sold 3 mid to high value non-cycling related items after a long spell of avoiding eBay due to experiences like the OP’s.

All 3 collected from my house and I ended 2 of the auctions early without getting the money first. Maybe I’ve been lucky, or maybe cycling and mtb’ing has a high proportion of ****. That’s been my experience with around 1/4 of bike stuff I’ve sold on here and eBay getting some sort of hassle.
