The rigid Kona may get an outing this weekend me thinks!

    It’s gonna be ice-rink-tastic…..

It was a bit waxy in places last night, especially if riding hard on the singletrack, which is my only strength at the moment!

Forecast is a bit shabby neither one way or other – can’t say I’m relishing the thought of it right now.

Email ‘Cheifgrooveguro’ or something similar to that – on here, speaking to him tonight he’s lost a team member for the ‘dog. He also goes by the name of Alex!

Very nice!! Interesting to notice that they have changed the chainstays and drop-outs in production. Geek alert there, sorry 😉

I’ve got the steel version in medium, the actual one reviewed by ST and it is my fav bike to ride at the moment. Super fast and precise on the singletrack. I probably wouldn’t go for ti myself though – personal choice!

I’ve yet to see another steel Enigma mtb, so post up a pic please djflexture 🙂

I’m sure you’ve all seen mine – ahem – but just incase (sorry) here it is again, after I repainted it from matt black to this whilst quiet at work!

I must be lucky, as I googled them for a Middleburn crank set, phoned them up and paid by card, items arrived next day.

Give them a ring, double check that they have stock.

The Tower is a folly anyway, the land around it was almost certainly cleared when it was built to show it off.

I agree with Frankie – he knows about trees and conservation – it’s also his job too!

A few Scott’s Pines are fine imo, they go well with the other Victorian follies we have in the landscape….

Congratulations Wilkinson Cycles – Best New Builder!

Allot of hours and thought went into making that frame and fork – I dread to think how many. My part was just laying some gravy on a well prepared dish. Love to see some pictures, you can’t miss it – it’s Green!

None of those colours were used on the Alegro – the Alegro was ten years later!

Harvest Gold is the colour you’re probably thinking of – it’s not gold though but beige.

Simon1975 – it was wider with speed links unique to it’s width – bmx type width. Perhaps it was another Sram chain – 1 speed on the box from my local (argh!!) Evans. Are you sure PC1 is 8speed…

Sadly, I couldn’t endorse the Royce BB. I bought one last summer, followed the instructions to the letter, even bought a new crankset Clif suggested. It creaks!! drives me crazy. I’ve spoken to Clif about it and of course it’s not any fault of his, he even suggested using thread lock/bearing fit compound on the tapers as a last resort – did this which I consider a bodge and it lasted three rides. Royce are accepting no responsibility, even though that was one of my main concerns/questions at time of purchase.

Next time Phil Wood Stainless – if there is a next time!

I used a PC1 on my Rohloff’d bike and destroyed it time over on one xc ride, much to the annoyance of my riding buddies who had to wait while I stictched various bits of back together over the ride – we ended up riding back in the dark without lights! Just a little but weary of 3/32 chains from that experience…is a KMC 610 really that much better?

Another numpty question; will the WI sprockets run ok with an 8spd chain or do I need a chunky PC1 type chain?

    Cheers

No not misunderstood anything nick3216 – exactly what I mean. Thinking of perhaps a Phil Wood with a WI sprocket on my fave 819’s (that’s probably more controversial than the hub )

Great, just the sort of info I’m looking for!

Wow! I half expected it to bias against the ss specific hubs. I’m almost sold, one other question; I take it that it’s not possible to adjust the spacing on a screw on sprocket? I have wonky legs and prefer to run a wide Q-factor – ss is a generally narrower chainline so I’d be running a shorter BB axle, whereas spaced cassette hub I can run it out nearer the end of the hub and get a wide BB…

    Grateful of the replies!

A 26” would suit sir just fine!

Seriously, it depends on inside leg length, and the type of riding you do. Long xc’s – maybe if you’ve the leg length, think about it the wheel is 29”…..

I got mine from Roundel the then importers – quite cheap. If not any Turner dealer should be able to order one, if they can be @rsed.

They’re still alive and well – got a rigid custom steel frame and fork on order!

I wouldn’t bother with a package, unless you’re going 29er (Salsa do something good there). Get yourself a nice steel frame first and then source the forks. I found it difficult to get a correct a-c length on an off the peg steel fork – didn’t want carbon, so I ordered a custom fork from Waltworks at around £170. I thought that was good value but undoubtedly someone will say could have got cheaper at on-one or some place similar.

I do most things on my rigid Kona that I can do on my regular hardtail, not sure what that says about me or rigid bikes. I find the rigid very quick on race type singletrack – Big Dog for example – faster than my other bikes, well it feels it anyway! 🙂

I avoid the area, especially at weekends for that very reason. The best riding is away from the likes of BKB but, at some point most people pass through to get to other areas, and Peaselake stores do serve some quite tasty snacks!

I think the official trails are a victim of their own success, and to use another cliche have backfired on the official’s original point somewhat. The publicity of these trails in magazines and forums is drawing more people in. I skipped through an edition of MBR in the newsagents (of course I wouldn’t buy such shite – tongue firmly in cheek)and Surrey Hills was marked on a map as a UK Trailcentre. Easy access from the motorways, what do you expect….

I use the Toro bar mounted and Joystick helmet mounted. As just said fine for familiar trails. I’ll be replacing that set up with a proper spot(10w) for the helmet and flood(20w) for the bars system. I’ll be looking at Ay-ups next!

Get the most powerful you can afford, you won’t regret it if you like to hammer the singletrack…

Evans are handy, but in a Tesco kinda way I nearly always feel dirty having used them.. 😉

Sorry to the couple of people I know who do/have worked there, obviously it is a totally different experience when you’re there 🙂

I’ve read two books on NLP well, almost finished the second one! For me it just re-affirmed what I already knew deep down, but allowed me to bring that to the fore and reset a few buttons so to speak, regarding things I may have been hanging on to in the back of my mind. I found it fun and quite liberating. In fact I’ve just included an NLP book in my packing for an overnight stay after a funeral today.

I have the mk1 type on two bikes and not once have they loosened. I’ve ridden in the Alps and Spain times over and not had the slightest of problems with them. I do tighten them up properly and make sure the lever is pushed over the ‘cam’ to it’s furthest point though.

Withought wanting to sound patronising, I am often amazed that not everybody understands how a q/r works and doesn’t push the lever over enough – as far as it goes! Where it will lock and be over the high point of the cam. Not saying that’s you though OP 🙂

Not tried the mk2 type after reading similar stories on here to this.

I’m the same as Highlander, have had a DHX air 5 on my Turner for six years and it’s not been serviced or loses any air – works just fine. I hope that this isn’t too much of a crass comment but; I researched a little into the DHX air as it was getting a slating on the forums, and I was having no issues at all with mine – worried about the longevity. Anyway, the Specialised version at the time was an ‘orignal equipment’ part, in other words designed for Secialised and with less (sorry) spec. The DHX air problems I’ve read about do seem to be almost unique to Specialised – I have heard of one other though.

My opinion is that it is a bad design – the designed for (and at less cost no doubt) Specialised version. Get in touch with Spesh?

I drove a new Passion 700cc in 05. It had the paddle shifter and was great fun to drive. I nearly bought one if I had the money at the time!

Secondary glazing here too, behind my own design windows. The house had horrible 1960’s poor quality windows, that were rotten anyway when I moved in. I liked the design of some local style windows – featured on some listed buildings and some not, and drew up a template to fit mine , had them made up. The listed building officer was very enthusiastic when I spoke to him about my plans. I wouldn’t bother with a local planning officer – I think I knew more than them (!) go straight to county level listed buildings officer. There will only be one covering a big area! We have one for West Sussex who visits our local authoritory less than a weekly basis – he can overide/persuade the planning officers so get in with him first! Really no hassle at all, they are so used to complete numpties, that if you show some knowledge and more so respect for what you own it’s win win win! 🙂

No probs here – almost 20 years owner of a listed building. Really not that much of a PITA, unless you want to try and make it into something it isn’t, but then you probably wouldn’t want to own a listed building in the first place. Building insurance is the only pitfall, I went with the mortgage company to avoid hassle, contents through M&S.

I redesigned the windows, put applications in for Chimney rebuilds as well – no probs at all! And there is no fee if it’s something that only requires listed building consent and not general planning. VAT exempt if you do decide on extending and no, they do not expect or want a modern pastiche(sp) of the original part of the building! Modern, with local materials desirable, but quality being the main thing.

Don’t let it put you off, unless you have big plans to turn it into something it isn’t. The listed building officers at County level are really helpful and encouraging and not as rigid as you may be led to believe. Go for it!
