The good thing about Elm, is that it dries well and cracks less than most other indigenous woods, due to the franetic direction of the grain. Hence, it’s widespread use for ‘Windsor’ chair seats in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Hollowed out sections were also used as piping in London’s first mains water system!

    Any other random Elm facts……

PS: Where abouts are you BigJohn?

As damion says! I think the authoritiories incinerate or burn any infected limbs to aviod spead to other Elms, but, if that’s not the case and you are Brighton way, I would take some firewood off your hands – once it’s felled. I wouldn’t pay for it though, Elm has a reputation for not being the best firewood.

BTW, the disease doesn’t come from Holland, it was a Dutch scientist who discovered the disease and that’s where the name came from, and it stayed.

Unless something has changed at the Station in four years, the food and the ale was bland and tasteless when I visited. Afan Lodge is better but, the new visitor centre is ace, if you are prepared to eat a bit early! Otherwise, take your own food………………

Neil Pride type bike bag, pipe lagging, bubble wrap, that’s it oh, I did unbolt the mech and taped it to the frame (cable still attached). I didn’t remove the discs as the bag comes with seperate wheel bags, that go inside the main bag. That’s it really. Not had a problem.

I’ve done it for 20 years now. It just evolved really, I didn’t need to borrow money to set it up, just bought equipment as I went along, I already had enough to start and replaced that as I earnt. The benefits being time to use as you wish to use it, the downside – salary. If you need premises, think not only of the rent/lease or purchase costs, add 40% plus for business rates, like council tax but higher, every month with no late payments tolerated by the authoritories! Think hard, the grass may or may not be greener – just different on the other side.

nickegg, if your wife’s an antique furtiture restorer and is working her ass off, and you are a cabinet maker – why not help her out and go into business together!? A £600 tax bill is surely not enough reason to leave the country ffs!

Leaving the country won’t leave your problems behind IMO – there must be more to it (your problems)…my two penneth worth.

Eat oily fish, ride your bike and have plenty of sex – don’t freak over 600 quid! That’s got to be the most ecclectic statement ever……

It gets like that every year, with the exception being 2008, the motorcycle enduro was cancelled for some reason. There is a thread on it from one of the organisers over at Sussexmuddy@arse if you’re interested in the whys and wheres – bit of history too.

I ought to get over there for a reccy, in the next couple of weeks as I’m hosting a ride, which takes in Tilgate as well as other lesser known parts! Pretty much guess what to expect.

NLP – I’m surprised no one’s mentioned it yet. Get down to Waterstones or any bookshop, under the self help section. NLP, Neuro Linguistic Programing, a beginers/introduction/how to improve your mind state level of book. The one I recommend is ‘NLP – the art and science of getting what you want’ easy reading positive thought enhancing book.

Start there – do it today.

I have suffered hip flexor pain when on long walks, only notice it walking not before or after cycling. Simple stretches have eliminated the problem for me, google hip flexor stretch.

bigyin, well if you fancy showing us your route, one weekend late summer (prefer to split it into two rides over two days – ability wise)…..not sure of numbers but we have four so far(three guys, one girl), with a possible two to four additions is my guess.

We’re over at Brightonmtb.org if you want to have look, that goes for any of the Daves too..

    Cheers

    Cheers both Daves’!

Thanks for the gpx, I don’t have one myself but one of our group may, so I’ll forward that on.

daveatextremistdotcodotuk, we plan to do the IOW in two days, so the 55 sounds about right for social pace. BTW, we could see the island from a view point (stone, flint folly) near Slindon, on a local ride Sunday – if it wasn’t for the water, it could be a local-ish ride for us!

I do remember an overview map of the whole island with a route circumnavigating the coast line though………

bigyin, thanks, a well kept pint of bitter is a serious consideration to our needs! Do you have any local breweries on the island, out of interest?

We’re not really sure where to ride, remember someone posting up a map of the island, with a coastal off road route circumnavigating the whole island. Sounded intrigiung, but saying that, we may prefer to take in some of the local secret stuff along the way or, just ride a few different areas. A small group of up from the south coast(mainland) are thinking of a long weekend trip over late summer.

    Your thoughts welcome..

I had a look in, on Monday lunchtime. I would say clothing is the only bargain area. Lots of womens stuff, tops mainly. Worth a look, if you’re local-ish I would say.

I picked up a 60 quid Gore top for 30.

Your two posts seem somewhat contradictory ChrisS, but if that’s your experience…..10 year warranty on the CK, hope (no pun intended) that you made use of that.

Inzane, sounds a very valid explanation there on using long travel forks, I run 140 Vans on my 5 spot so, not quite in the same territory. I did go through a period with my old Blur of creaking headset (same headset of course). I was finding, in hot dusty conditions over time, that a small amount of grit/dust must have been getting onto the crown race taper, as when I cleaned this the creaking would dissapear.

I can’t see how you would be aware of the CK bearings filling with crap, without removing the stainless snap ring, ChrisS!? Or did the headset fail in some way, and that was your assumption?

    woodsman
    Free Member

You obviously haven’t taken a CK headset apar ChrisS, how about the stainless snap ring and seal system – have you removed that, and have you had a CK headset fail?

    woodsman

I’ve had both, the Hope is in the bin, the CK is still on the bike(three different frames) nearly ten years on and super smooth, with one grease up about two years ago. The Hope lasted almost two years, at £60 as opposed to the £100 King – which is still good after almost ten years, it doesn’t represent particularly good value, or prudence to get the Hope.

I wouldn’t ever buy a Hope headset again, the new ones are a bad design too, I had one of those as well, a standard FSA type set up but with lots of seals, EXTERNAL vulnerable seals which won’t last like a King. The bearing showed signs of spinning in the cup as well, if you follow Hope’s guidlines of packing all the contact and other surfaces with grease. Which is the only way they can attempt to waterproof it. When I took it apart after a couple of winter rides to service the fork, the headset had water between all the components, and there are quite a few in the Hope, this is when I noticed the evidence of the bearing race spinning in the ali cup – yes it was fitted correctly. I have a King on that bike now, second hand and of course it’s faultless – fit and forget.

I wish I could say otherwise, and be patriotic, but they are sh!te from my experience.

It’s rideable weather here (at the moment) in western Sussex. May go for a bimble over the local forest later or the Surrey Hills. Tomorrow Box Hill is my intention provided it’s not lashing down.

I’ve been taking glucosamine for about 8 years. Unfortunately, the cheap ones (Boots own, or the mail order cheapies) just don’t work. Expect to pay £19.99 for 90 tablets, I’m currently using Holland and Barrat Glucosamine with MSM. Don’t get their cheap stuff either. High5, the energy suppliments brand, used and may still do ‘joint formular’ I found these worked well. But, having done a bit of research, there was a suggestion that CHONDROITING was shown to have a affect on prostrate problems – making them worse, there was some advice in the Sunday Times that men over 40, should avoid chondroiting. I’ve stopped the chondroiting with no noticeable effect.

I have found that good quality glucosamine, with MSM (can be taken seperately) does have a positive affect on my knee joints. But, as already said, needs to be taken as part of your daily regime. It’s not a pain killer and a couple of weeks or a month isn’t going to produce the effects you may wish. High5 state 6 weeks use before any benefits are noticed on average.
