Totally believe it. If you look at dendrochronology (tree ring dating), there is always it seems, a cluster of similar rings, so expect a few wide (wet) years after the narrow (dry) cluster of years leading up to and including 2006 that we've had!

We were spoilt, if you like it hot and dry, this is more like an English summer.

Good for tree growth of course, and sapling survival, plus the sale of winter/mud tyres! 😉

Flamejob, can you give me some details on those silver Syncros crank arms? Did you get them local – recognise that drop at the quarry Leith Hill?

As Zukemonster says, come along to the sports centre car park, at Sussex Uni, Falmer 7 pm on a Thursday and ride with B'mtb – you'll prob need lights for the last hour or so though. Or, email them and they'll let you know if there is a local (same meeting place) ride on that weekend. Or, you can ride the open South Downs – your choice.

I don't think you'll get any weld fatigue cracks on that! Sort of standard of welding I can relate to http://www.peterflynnclassiccars.com. Nice workmanship but it looks like a harsh ride to me…

Frames look good, agree the pics and the site aren't doing the product justice.

I think a more simple site with gallery and some lighter pics, would relate better to the hand made bespoke product they're marketing. All that black is jarring I feel.

There is a car repair garage which sells some bike stuff, and hires bikes. It is very basic though so don't expect much in the way of spec. That's about it. A lovely place I'm very envious!

Doug, that does sound complicated, definately on my list of places to ride, I speak a little Spanish so that's a bit of a relief!

Should have some pics of a ride I'm leading tomorrow, I'll put a link up when they get added to the club site.

From my experience, you will possibly need to weld the corners of the roof, but certainly the steel bar at the back of the sunroof is rotten and that it what you are feeling. The roof with need to be taken apart and rebuilt to do it, the vinyl may not be good after this, especially around the rusted back bar.

Are you sure it's a Webasto? As there smallest roof is a bit big for an MGB GT, the majority if not all that I've seen are Britax – again expensive to replace, new if you can get them 1000 min (last time I tried not available). A specialist trimmer should be able to restore though, or a second hand item. 'Richardsons' have been breaking MG's for decades, google them or get hold of an MG magazine for their details.

Curious too! I like the concept – ride as good as steel, yet no taking care of paint or corrosion issues. I don't know anyone who's owned one for a good lenth of time, and 'rides it' it's not cracked, normally through the weld. The welding process is specific and has to be in a controlled environment for it to work, long term it appears. I think you're fine if going for the top boutique brands, Indy Fab, Jones etc but I wouldn't risk the more affordable brands. Stick with steel, at least it can be repaired/resprayed if anything happens – it is the most plyable material, which is why fatgue cracking on a decent steel frame is rare. Some get bent, some are poorly made also before anyone states, that their 150 quid steel frame has cracked!

I'd love a Ti frame, just that I don't know anyone who's had one for a good lenth of time, that hasn't cracked!?

[The welding process is very specific and controlled to be successful]

If you buy or aquire a listed building and it has previous unauthorised modifications or works, that would have rquired consent, YOU are liable. It's a system that works, to prevent the scenario you paint having any influence on the buildings future.

Having said that, the rules and regulations are not as rigid for the majoritory of listed buildings, which are grade 2, that you may imagine. I've lived happily in mine for 15 years, had no problem with the planners what so ever. Changed my windows, no problem. The conservation officer was nothing but encouraging.

There will be comprehensive records of why the building was listed, and it's construction. Also, listed buildings are gradually being photographed along with the 'list description' and added to the English Heritage website. So, as above it will have to be reinstated, also fines and possible imprisonment is possible.

I watched the Beeney program, and thought the owners of the listed house by the road were idiots. Buying a listed building, and trying to remove the features it was listed for – people would want to buy it for. They didn't give a fig about the building, just profit. That's what listed building protects against.

I live in a listed buildingm by a busy road. If it didn't have the features it was listed for, I wouldn't have bought it, and lived in an ordinary house in a quiet location.

How about the Langshot Manor, Horley, as I see you appreciate a bit of culture. Situated, similarly to The Six Bells, close to Gatwick, tucked away but again, near the housing (privately owned) areas, but full of character again. Historic listed manor house, with the generic Horsham stone roof I've already mentioned, ahem, yes I am an old buldings geek! They may have a restaurant, but you could walk to the six bells (mile and a bit), have a beer in The Farmhouse (very close) on the way. Or cab it to Reigate (5 miles max).

I tried one a few years ago, thought it was a good all rounder, wore a bit quick is my memory, and that I thought it gripped well!

The Six Bells in Horley, Church Lane(I presume) is very much still there, a listed building with a Horsham Stone roof (geek content there, sorry). I used to go in there at school lunch time (well once I did). I think it may well have been taken over by a chain, can't comment on the food, but the beer was dreadful the last time I went. Great building, and full of character still, and only a mile or less from the ghastly hotels at Longbridge Roundabout, you could walk there.

If you don't mind the trip to Reigate, I would say book a table at The Dining Rooms if you're after fine dining or, a table at the Parador if you like authentic tapas. I would go for the latter. There are the standard Italian-esque eateries in abundance too, better than the cr@p you describe eating at the hotel.

I've eaten as most of twig'ers recommendations, in the past, they're all good. The Bell at Outwood was excellent when I last ate there last, some years ago to be honest. The Dining Rooms in Reigate is fine dining, it will have to be booked I'm sure, also it will cost. The trouble is none of the recommendations are that close to Gatwick, a cab ride 5-7 miles each way average. I would just put up with the hotel restuarant, it's only one night.

The Plough at Rusper may be worth a google, phone call, or the Star in same said village 3 miles Gatwick.

CK – no brainer for me next time, after fitting shonky Hope headsets in the past which didn't last THAT long, and were getting close to CK prices. CK headset, 10 years still smooth. I would buy cheap Shimano or CK if I was thinking of upgrading – wouldn't consider Hope.

'pop a cap in it's ass'

Seriously, report it or it could be more serious next time it attacks. I was chased by a Doberman, on part of the national cycle network. The owner was powerless over the dog, and histerical. I got away with it – just, it was a harrowing experience. I reported it to the police, who put me in touch with their dog people, they paid a visit to the owner, gave them a stiff talking to, told them to keep the dog under control in a public place etc. Now, I ride past in bliss – not had a problem since, that was five years ago or more.
