but then I do this for a living http://www.peterflynnclassiccars.com

I could do them for you, it is a fair bit of faffing though and obviously cheaper to do it yourself – if you can.

email me for a price with colour choice if you're serious

Hopefully there will be some more pictures to come, as there were lot's of flashes going off around the course!

Mr Joolze's pics don't seem as comprehensive as Mrs Joolze's were last year…..

Ooh, I don't know, but worth a try J. If you're at Stanmer Sat perhaps you could bring them along?

I'll be on the silver Rohloff'd hardtail – which you had a go on once outside Morroco's few years back!

I would hope it's 30 miles or less – so count yourself in RealMan!?

Just be great to be shown some local stuff rather than ride with head in a map, and some insider info on the best lunch stop of course, and after ride beer maybe! 😉

Two definates here – maybe more to come.

I and at least one other can make the 12th, how about meet on the Ryde side of the Catamaran docking point (there is a cafe and plenty of space for bikes) at 10, and maybe aim to get back to that point 6 ish?

    Bigyin – whadya reckon?

It was dry apart form a small amount of gloop at the top last night 'classic Stanmer singletrack' which didn't really amount to much anyway. Should be dry as a dry thing if we get the two dry days now forecast.

Don't bother with SS, I don't think you'll get through the windy rooty climbs at Coldean. Normal XC tyres and the rest is personal preference.

The ground is hard and fast, the climbs are little toughies! Some nice off camber riding too…..

There a load of Combo's for sale in the 'Friday AD' a south east freebe paper, mostly trade, but lot's of ex Gas Board etc.

    Think they have a website…..

Let me know how you get on, I'm thinking alons similar lines.

I can get there, the last train back in 9.30pm though, I'd prefer not to need lights, and if we move the cat crossing forward 15 mins it's two for one (may need to check that still applies for weekends).

If you click on the 'trail guide' tab on STW home page, it brings up a route from Ryde – I didn't do that one when I visitied last week, so no idea what it's actually like. It would be ideal if we could get a local to show us a day's ride, I think we would be back at Ryde early eve….

Have a search under my name, I have started some Isle of Wight threads recently.

Of course I'd be up for it…..

Ok, well here's a start – riding from Ryde, as it's easy to get to from Portsmouth rail station, and the catamaran sets off from there. £14 return or half price ticket is apparently available after 9.30 am.

We got the train from Brighton, 6.50 am, and were boarding the 'cat' at 8.30ish, not bad eh!

Be great if we can get some local knowledge/guide as map reading and trying to find the good stuff is a bit of a faff in a day..

Hey, I think all you hampshire locals ought to do a STW Isle of Wight ride!? I think that'd be ace, after my first bike trip there during last week. Didn't know where to ride but thought the place had amazing potential!!

    hint hint 🙂

Ok Rep, if I see anyone dressed head to toe in white, I'll say hello to you! 😉

Just remember to change, if you're heading out for a beer in town after – you may attract some unwanted attention!!! Avoid an establishment called 'Revenge' [snigger]

Do a basic course and learn as you gain experience, as there is a lot to take in.

Bike shop mechanics are bodgers in my experience, not engineers. The only thing I use them for is wheel building, the last two wheels I've had built, they've (different shops) fecked up a rotor or another part of the hub in the process. I now need to add a wheel building stand to my kit!!

By the time you've done a basic course, ridden your bike through a couple of winters, had various parts fecked up by shop mechanics (spotty kids – normally), and read the odd book or magazine article – you'll be competant at fixing and building your own bike. Plus some expenditure on tools of course!

    🙂

I'm pretty sure you can just rock up and enter the 'onederdog' which is one lap! You can enter as many times at £6 a time, which gets you tea and cake, and go for the fastest lap – top gear leader board style.

That's as it was from riding with one of the organisers, couple of months back, may be worth an email if you're thinking of that.

I recall having a conversation about this with someone from the inside, so to speak – you echo my sentiments at the time regarding this scheme.

How about a helmet with a built in hairdryer ……….to compliment the drive to get women on bikes – in bubble gum pink or course! 😉

It's all making sense now James, yep it must be as adaptor as it has a screw thread on the inside, which fits over the presta. I have a compressor at work so that's cool!

Shame they didn't provide any info with the rim, the shop could have binned that when they built my wheel I guess.

I guess the other bits are, spare 'o' rings and schraider valve bits. Thats good, I plan to run a UST tire, but will put in some sealant for good measure. Probably doing a race next weekend – Big Dog at Brighton. Lot's of thorns in the south!

Tomorrow morning! Coming over for the day with my GF, she may not be up for a full on lads ride, thought it would be nice to do a bit of quiet tarmac, and a couple of hours of downs or preferably singletrack. We'll be doing the tourist thing for the day (lunches, cake stops etc), with a couple of hours of decent biking in too – holefully.

Looking for a nice little loop, or area to look at on the map, few miles riding distance from the ferry port at Ryde, ideally?

That simple eh! Lots of other parts in the bag!?

Thanks for the recipe for sealant, but by the time I've sourced all that I could have bought a bottle of DT Sealant for 9.99.

Any more experience with the 819 tubeless set up?

I gave Matthew a ring at Middleburn after hearing on here. The 38's are stock, just not on the site, which is in the process of being revamped. The contact details are on their site.

Ok, so a standard 8spd chain works ok, bit confused by the statement on crc site regarding ss chain only, as I destroyed a PC1 in no time, and won't be going back there.

    8 speed chain ok then?

    woodsman

The 38's are too new for the website – apparantly! What chain are you using?

Plan on going all silver btw.

Yep, look at the free air delivery, it's a bit like horsepower ratings in cars, quoted at the flywheel i.e engine on a dyno bench and not in a car. The horsepower at the wheels is probably 30% less on average. Don't know if that analogy helps.

Buy the biggest you can, as air tools consume loads. 3 horsepower motor is the most single phase power, but you need to wire that directly into the fuseboard. To get your 7hp you are going to need most of 12-13 cfm. You'll need all of the 50 litre tank, again go for as much as you can accomodate, space wise.

I have a 370 litre tank, with two 3hp motors, that start staggered, to give a 20cfm free air, 29.5cfm quoted by manufactuers. That's wire direct into 30 amp single phase fuse box, via a switched fuse of course. I believe that's the biggest single phase available.

I use it for car repair tools http://www.peterflynnclassiccars.com

Update:I called Middleburn and found them very helpful, they do indeed do a 38T ring for the Uno, trouble is the chainline on SS is much different to running a Roholff, it can be done but bottom bracket lenths would need to be changed to suit. The Rohloff sprocket is right on the edge of the hub, where as a SS is further in towards the hub. An RS7 arm with a 'Dual' spider is the way to go – apparently!

I'll let you know how I get on calling Middleburn later – they've still no replied to last weeks email. I've got the gearing spot on for me 38*16.
Good point on the campy road rings – guess other rings may fit it?
