Maybe he needs a second opinion or is undecided on something, want's to be sure before letting you know any results. He could have said that to you in person though – hey you're entitled to be feeling shity, it's that strong attitude that's pulling you through! keep fighting – repsect!

Let us know how you get on with that hungreymonkey, the Rohloff runs the sprocket outer edge of the hub, in theory a 113 won't be enough, as ss tends to be in more towards centre. I think you'll possibly need another 5mm. It'll be interesting to know as I would like to run a Uno or Eno crank, just having to get and expensive looong bb like a Royce is blowing it out of the water, for me!

Those peak injuries are nothing campared to 'chuffnuts' – he may be along to explain, or maybe he's trying to put it behind him now. Basically he lost a significant part of his nose due to peak and slicing action. A few plastic surgeries later and only his Mum would know 😉

That's interesting that you are running a Uno system, what bottom bracket lenth are you using to get the wide-ish 54.5 chainline?

Piriformis eh, I sometimes wonder if I have that – more hope that I have that. It's where the sciatic nerve takes a more unusual route through the glutes, than normal. I suppose an MRI scan would reveal all.

Glad you've not got disc probs stumpy – a real mofo!

I did the overshoe thing for years, it does work, I think I must have spent over the cost of my Lake boots on overshoes in the past though. Only really got one winter out of a pair, tend to rip up a bit.

    Lake – the ultimate IMO!

I bought a pair of old model 301's I believe from All Terrain Cycles, they came out at £100 exactly – last year. I've been through one winter and I'm looking forward to using them again in the coming months. Fabulous boots, comfy, warm, waterproof(so far), such quality – you'll never buy Shimy again. I bought some summer riding shoes(Lake)this year!

    Can't recommend them enough.

I would think aP is refering to historic/old birckwork, where the bricks are softer than today's. The bricks draw in an amount of moisture, then as it freezes the brick expands, with modern hard mortar, the brick cannot expand, as the mortaris impervious, resulting in the brick cracking, or blowing the face of. In victorian and earlier traditional lime mortar was and ideally should be used. This isn't harder than the bricks, and breathes with the fabric of the old building. It's also much more enivironmentally sound than using cement.

I did take it that you were a chiro or osteo, and I didn't ask what you did btw! My prolasped disc (undaignosed) was damaged further by such treatment.

My point exactly is that, 'most people don't know what sciatica is' as you say. And that piriformis syndrome and other ailments give sciatica symptoms but, aren't sciatica.

The best advice is to hold back and take it easy, which is what I gave, based on my own personal experience. If the OP had wanted professional medical advice he wouldn't have been posting on an MTB forum! One would assume, and he has seeked medical advice.

I'm sure I read on Hope's site that the bearings are Cane Creek anyhow – think it was on their exploded diagrams that they inadvertantly published the bearing manufacturer – possibly for the MK1, I've had both and found them to be not so good – worn them out basically.

I so wish that Hope would make a headset to rival King – I'd buy it for the quality and not because it's British. Obviously I'd prefer to buy home grown. If we buy because it's British alone, then the product could become like British Leyland of the past, relying on loyal customers and not bringing their product up to the standards of the best of the competition – ultimately it will fail! Don't get me wrong, I've plenty of Hope products, brakes and hubs on my bikes which I am very pleased with but, the headsets just aren't worth the money. They are near King price and no where near the quality. I did have one Hope headset last three years until it crapped out, I've a 8-9 year King which is silky smooth still, and another second hand on my other bike.

How much of the Hope headset is British – the cups and spacers is my guess, maybe some rubber seals. Certainly the case on the mk1's. ?

There is absolutely loads of options, just avoid the street with all the amusements and chavy clubs, plenty of places to eat and drink. Lion and Lobster towards the Hove end of town but still feels central, great Dark Star beer, food upstairs although I did hear that they had a kitchen fire recently!

Or if you don't want to book, go to North Laine's, beer in the Cricketers and if there isn't a queue, Jamie Olivers place a couple of doors down, food good and they don't take bookings, so you could get in. It wasn't overly expensive either when I went, queued for 10-15 mins from memory. Food is simple and wholsome.

It's due to a prolapsed disc. You will not make the D2D ride if you have sciatica! It is caused by a bulging disc pushing on the sciatic nerve. Rest and do not over stretch!

A year ago I went through similar, it does get better, almost a full feeling of recovery but it takes time. If you go back to early it'll last longer. Slow rides when you feel up to it, not when things are acute!

I'm not sure if everyone above had sciatica, a session at a drop in centre would not cure a prolapsed disc – maybe you had something other than sciatica, as nickhart say's, it is horrendous! I couldn't even put a pair of socks on in the morning, the pain was so intense, and it would just set it off again for the day. Kneeling at the table to eat, because I couldn't sit etc etc.

Getting back to the point, it does slowly recover, six weeks is the time you should see some improvement however small. Then you will be on the road to recovery, just don't do anything silly in the meantime!

Easy to make a cr@p job ot it, hard to make a good job of it.

Angle grinders should be banned for pre-pointing!

Flush, slightly recessed and never raised like crazy paving joints.

tuck pointing is a bit too technical for a garage surely aP

Looks great, I must go sometime – next year maybe. I've remember chatting to Ady and Jo a good couple or perhaps three years ago, on a Surry Hills ride, about their set up over there, they've made a great success of it by all acoounts.

Loving mine – no gear slippage issues under load or otherwise. It would appear that it's not for everyone though!

IIRC – the torque flares open inbred track ends!? It would be worth doing a bit or research on that before purchase.

If you get a black one and don't like it I may buy it from you – for my other bike… 😉

The Hood if fully booked alas – The Olde Cider House is a contender at the mo, I'll look into the others mentioned too.

We should have some numbers after the weekend.

Thanks guides' – we're looking forward to some singletrack Q's style and the cider of course!

I very much like the 'handmade bike show' articles of the past, with the 'mental lugs' already described! he he 🙂

I've also been looking at the Euro and Inter bike stuff too, if only to frown dissaprovingly at the latest re-design of the wheel – mostly 😉

That's your new role that is – Chief! 😉

I've contacted the cider house, they have accom, and waiting for the Hood to get back to me – only emailed them today.

I won't be making the night ride, going to head out local again. Give me a call/text if you fancy a bimble over the forest tomorrow late afternoon/early eve Alex.

Aleigh, what have you got going on for the 31st weekend. If it's in the Q's we could join you for one of the days perhaps?

sharki – as long as we have a guide for the day, who will be well fed and watered with ale or cider of course, fancy dress or not we don't mind.

I'm not sure what Zukemonster has arranged with anyone – he's chief organiser for this one…..

Thanks again sharki, I've just googled them, it's not the place I had in my mind – it looks really nice! Sent them an email regarding the 31st weekend – part of Zukemonsters group. 🙂

There is a youth hostel at Patcham/Preston on the A23. No idea of prices and bike friendliness. You're going to struggle to get anywhere central, on a Saturday and for anywhere near that price. It may be your only option.
