Hi, sorry for the delay, I forgot my mate's on holiday in Bali – they're starting from Les Gets on the Sunday. I'll have to pass on this.

    Thanks for holding on.

Dibs please! I could be, I'll find out if it's the same start point as my mates and confirm on here asap. How easy would it be to transfer entry?

Had a wheel built by them, and like forge197 there was an issue with an ancillary, a Rohloff axle plate which they hack sawed off due to rounding the torx. That element resolved at no cost after I complained, I must say the wheel is probably the best I've had, and is still absolutely true today. I'd use them again for wheel building, or purchases if needed. I do the rest myself anyway.

I know where you're coming from, I'm three rides in on this – all for the cost of a top end headset.

I used manitou M-prep grease on the seals fwiw.

Does anyone have an online link to full service of Rev Coils. I've done the lowers but need some detail, oil capacities etc for a full sevice.

    Cheers

My back and shoulders were killing me on a hardtail. A light-ish xc suspension bike would be ideal for me and my ailments.

Apparently – 'peer pressure' to quote Mr Warby. Someone will probably take on the warden role from the club that is to be formed, to coincide with the CTC take over. I think that is to be formalised at the meeting I mentioned.

No worries glen, glad you can see where I'm coming from a bit more now. The land at Tilgate is a mix of Crawley and Mid Sussex councils with the bulk middle part Forestry Commission.

I had a candid hour long telephone conversation with Ian, and this is a scheme in it's infancy that the CTC are keen to roll out across other areas, Forestry at the start, then privately owned areas where trail building is prolific, and deamed a problem/risk by the land owners. Basically, the fees are compulsory CTC membership with added top up fees, to make the £6 per day permit, or £68 annual. It's to relieve the land owners, public or private, of any responsibility and the third part risks, as the CTC will take the resposibility, and waymark/grade and inspect the trails. They will not provide any actual trails/materials or labour other than inspection. I can see the benefits for and against, although I probably don't need to state my view. 🙂

glenp – really, well you may not know the history regarding Tilgate, they are taking over a public access area, and charging for it's use, and we don't seem to have a choice. Details will be thrashed out at the meeting.
I wish we had a choice as to whether or not to have their £68 per year, per cyclist charge, or £6 per day permit to ride, proposals for monitoring the trails Tilgate. They will not provide any trails, just inspection and CTC membership.

A conversation with Ian, revealed that they are looking to roll this out across other privately owned ride areas too. You never know, it could be coming to an area near you, some point.

There are other areas going through this, that were free to ride up until now, Rogate is one that I recall, and there was a thread on here regarding that recently.

Oi! you lot, looks like I've received a flaming in my abscence 😉 No worries we're all entitled to our opinions – I'm not feeling the heat too much, I'm actually chuckling here. After being informed on yesterdays night ride that I've been flamed, I think all is reasonably good humoured.

    Cheers Si and Rob!

I guess I'm a little sensitive to this type of 'trail building' as we're facing a CTC Ian Warby take over of our local forest at Tilgate, they are planning on charging £6 per day to ride it, and WE have to provide the trails etc etc it goes on. There is a meeting with the officials at the K2 leisure centre 29th April 7.30 if anyones interested.

I rode Abbazabba on Sunday too, I can't recall any logs in the way, not to say that there wasn't – I didn't notice anything unusual. Did 'blind terror ' ending though, so could have been on the other section s'pose.

As to the Nirvana comments – sounds about right ,although anyone going out expecting a hard xc ride on the Sunday will be dissapointed, it really isn't that – more of a cruise to the technical trails. It must vary, and I am a intermittent regular.

I've got both. Revelation 426 coil Pushed, and Vanilla's.

Vanilla's by a huge margin for me. Plushy plush, full travel, soak up stutter bump nicely too. Rev's, none of the above really.

I'm certainly not talking about 'built' trails, there is so much nice natural.

I'd doff my hat to anyone who could ride both parts of two head dog, or all the pies on a road bike – respect if you can.

As for the trails you mention njee20, I'm hardly surprised that you are so blinkered and opinionated, if that's your representation of the riding in the area.

freeridenick – I'm agreeing with your last post. I tend to avoid those trails where possible now, they were good some years back! There is still some good riding to be had, it's way off track so to speak, and I would be careful who I told in fear of the 'sanitisation police' getting wind of it, and implementing their 'road bike' strategy to it. I'm sure you know where it all is though.

    Sonor 🙂

glenp, there has always and is, a choice of trails in the area, where you can ride fire trails and some twisty stuff with a road bike if you so wish, it's all on a OS map. To turn an existing trail into that is surely going to be provocative, especially to the people who rode and possibly created it previously. That must also be selfish surely.

Exactly my point – it isn't a trail centre, and hence my comparison, to geetee72's point. But, the publicity (informal or formal) that this trail is receiving is far more than it warrants.

geetee72, that's an interesting point that I hadn't considered up 'til now. For me if I travelled to a visitor centre which I rarely do, but non the less do on occasion. I would expect lots of long challenging trails, and that has been the case. I think BKB is getting a lot of publicity since the reworking, people travel as hora has said, perhaps from London, expecting to find a section of trail, shorter of course, but perhaps similar in technicality to say, end of Whites Level in Wales; where there is some line choice necessary, a few obstacles to contend with, options to hook off some rideable lips etc. Only, to find a bit of natural at the top, going into huge berms with quite frankly nothing after but surfaced straights.

As a local trail, surfaced to cope with erosion and resident complaints of noise (there is only house and that's beyond the ending)I think it works well enough, but to advertise it as something grand, which I'm afraid will happen if you involve the CTC and Mr Warby, people will be expect more than it is, which is why I think you are getting this intervention. All of the singletrack in the area, not just Holmbury and Pitch but also Leith has evolved and changed in my experience, never has a trail been created and it just stayed as it is.

I was riding the area Saturday, and we used BKB to connect with the other side. I had to stop a couple of times, I found myself riding behind a guy at one point, with full panniers on a road bike – I'm not sure he'd be able to do that at the trail centres you perhaps refer to geetee72.

Firstly I would like to make it clear that I do NOT condone any of the rogue building mentioned on this trail. But, I really think this is going to be difficult to control. By building and advertising on forums and magazines through articles, this 'wonder trail', many many people are flocking to the area to ride it. The traffic around the area leading to the trail, and the erosion is the worst I've ever seen it in the 12 or so years that I've been riding the area (BKB didn't exist in any form then).

Having those huge berms just followed by straights is going to attract other, non-sponsered by CTC (Ian Warby) type trail builders. There are adverts at the shelter (Peaselake) saying how great Mr Warby is for having involved himself in the making of the BKB – it is his paid job BTW.

It is fairly uninteresting for the experienced but still pleasurable, and is likely as said to attract the eye of the folk who may have built other stuff in the general area, is my guess. It is going to be very difficult to keep as it is, it is a great all levels trail, and I do enjoy it, but I only use it as a means to get across to the other side. Oh, and I haven't mentioned the cars parked at the top every time I ride past, people putting on armour – I find it embarassing to hang around too long!

You could say it is a victim of it's own success.

I remember feeling as you describe after coming out of a ten year relationship. It does get better, make the most of any opportunities in the next stage of your life.

It is hard now, as said keep busy and just think of all the other people that must be going through this too – they'll survive ok and so will you.

    All the best.

Just had a look at those axles on CRC, say for the 540, doesn't mention the other models, I'm sure it will fit the same, but they could have a better bearing system. At 19.99 PER AXLE it's cheaper to buy a new pedal set!!

I haven't really paid much attention to them until this thread. The pic on the site doesn't do a great deal, but if you 'launch the microsite' it looks a whole lot of rucksack.

I wouldn't mind something timeless like that but not much bigger than say a Camelback Mule, myself. I'm looking for a new backpack, but I want it to be made of basic but rugged materials, and I don't want it to be 'camo', or look like I've just jumped out of an assault helicopter! Which the 'handmedown doesn't)

    Suggestion anyone?

Chipps – 'fancy dress' yeah well, call it what you will! 😉 I remember in the autumn, he was showing us around the Q's over a weekend, on the second morning he turns up, with fancy camera and proceeded to show us the pics from a party the night before – he was wearing GOLD HOTPANTS ONLY in all of them! Why don't you turn up to ride at 11 am Sunday at Nirvana Cycles!? You'll get to ride the interesting stuf rather than the overated touristy trails like BKB. Anything decent isn't mapped IMO.

Saturday isn't that busy surprisingly, Sunday (sunny) can be embarrassing to be around the numpty hell that Can be Peaselake.

Looks great, and the stem does look like an early one, with the cable guide part of it. I'm sure you'll make a great build of it.

Cool! Be interested to see a pic when you get around to it.

Same here, got a very original 95, still on it's original brake blocks, chain and BB, all in good order too, not sure it's been off road yet! All original except the stem that is! Oh well, one will turn up sooner or later.
