I agree with him. They’ll piss air through the sidewalls without sealant.

Riding specialised the captains 2.0 on a Trek Topfuel 9, which is the xc race/all day bike. Ride pretty hard in most conditions and I’m really happy with them. Riding tubeless.
An mbr review gave them 7/10, saying they’re not amazing on wet roots but I’ve had no problems.

Specialised the captain 2.0. Really like them for afan and other rocky rooty trails. They come in a 2.2 as well.

Try some of training articles on bikeradar. I’m perfectly happy for you to rip off their pics.

e.g. this and the related articles.

    cranberries
    pinenuts
    raisins
    banana (is good for chewyness)

oh yeah, and a little bit of treacle instead of the syrup gives a certain something.

Also don’t bother with microwaving the butter, just melt in the pan before adding the rest of the stuff.

If I’d just lost two bikes, I don’t think I’d be leaving the 3rd one unlocked outside shops! In Bristol!!

Off to the spar now to buy some milk, will take lock.

Generally I ride reasonably expensive 2nd or 3rd hand kit bought from people that I know.
    so that would be:
    Forks – fox rl80s – 2nd hand
    Frame – trek topfuel 9 – 2nd hand
Handlebars – carbon monkeylite things – 2nd hand
Wheels – mavic crossmax sl’s – 3rd hand going strong and super quick.

old bike was a bit of a keep it going on as little as possible job, but now I’m getting into it again and have been splashing the credit card a bit.

New stuff generally off the crc, wiggle or merlin or edin bike co-op

LBS keeps the old 70’s track frame singlespeed on the road.

    Anyway what about enduros?

The mtb-wales lot have got some quick people – anyone for all 4 at afan?

njee, yeah well he wouldn’t be so fast now if it hadn’t been for a bunch of 16years olds (including his big brother) kicking his 14year old ass at every race :-)

Last summer I honestly couldn’t believe the size of him when I saw him for the first time in 11/12 years .

I was 7th fatest youth in Scotland in 1996. I would beat Gareth Mongomery at every race! (although I was a year older and he was about a quarter of the size he is now).

Hey mudshark, I just find the chrome to be a much cleaner interface, marginally quicker for the things that I do. Also when you open a new tab recently viewed and favourite websites are shown which is a brilliant feature, using space otherwise wasted.

Yeah on the balance I think you might have a bit more fun on the full sus.

Where you start depends on which cafe you prefer and if you want to have a tea/cake stop halfway round or at the end.

The link leaves/joins the whites at the end of windy point/start of energy, and leaves/joins the wall just before the final little uphill singletrack section before the descending starts.

Frog corner is quality, I ride it almost every weekend and its not always a bog. Even when it is you can still carry your speed round the bottom corner and blast through the quagmire. Plus there is the opportunity for getting your wheels off the ground.

True the climb out is a bit of a killer, but then i quite like the odd climb!

Also, from brakeswithface above, its the penhydd and whites which are relatively smooth, with the wall being the most rocky and brake bumpy.

    Nice1.

A lot of good suggestions there.

Haven’t made the choice any easier tho!

I just serviced my fox rl’s yesterday. Bought all the bits direct from mojo but I’m sure you can get similar oil cheaper elsewhere. They foam rings are supposed to come with a “pillow pack” of float fluid that is a gloop that lubes the foam rings. Mine didn’t come with that though.

Also remember all the servicing info is also linked off the mojo site.

You should do the front one yourself and get a pro to do the back – you would learn a lot.

It’s easy enough and satisfying when you get it right.

Or pay something like £10 for a wheel build…..?

Then have an epic planned for Margam on sunday, probably going over the top to drop in on Afan.

There was recently an article in a popular mountain bike magazine about the impacts of colds over the winter months. Matt Hart wrote about prevention, nutrition and cure in STW Dec08

On getting over colds the advice was as follows:
    – Takes loads of VitC, like 4 to 6 500mg tablets/day (based on the ability of other mammals to synthesise high level of VitC during illness) – interestingly he also noted that vitC is probably not that useful during normal periods if you eat a healthy diet. Apparently you’ll know when you had enough vitC when you feel the need to shit.
    – Take echinacea twice a day (i can vouch for this definitely has helped me in the past)
    – Take some L-Glutamine amino acid – helps immune system function properly
    – Take zinc as the body needs it to recover
    – Take cod liver oil
    – Take garlic pearls (or a big curry as suggested above)
    – Drink lots of water.

Also, personally i think the sleep lots and eat spicy food suggestions are really good.

Today afan was pretty white. A group of ten of us did the penhydd in about 3 hours at a leisurely pace with a few mechanicals. Conditions on the singletrack was pretty good but the fireroad climbs were tough going on the compacted snow/ice. Felt like singletrack all the way.

I then did the wall climb, link over to the whites and then down to glencorrwg – took bloody ages cos those trails are a lot more exposed. Was about 8 inches of snow in places over the parsons nose link. I saw a fox in the snow (where did you go) and then a few meters later loads of foxtracks and the blood of something that had been eaten,.

Really beautiful as the sun was setting, then bloody cold cycling back down the valley to the get train back to swansea.

So yeah, penhydd pretty good, whites/wall/skyline much harder work.
