I think that the people in the borders hate the english a lot less than the welsh hate the english!

(grew up in the borders, lived in glasgow, now in south wales for 4 years).

I suppose that in Northumbria at least you’re not that far from Newcastle.

    Nice replies cheers,
I’m on 26″ wheels and will mostly be riding the smooth jumps at clyne in swansea. Just want to make sure I can pedal back up a bit and can also ride the seafront cycle path to get there as well, so will probably go for something like a 36/16 (depending on what old chain ring i can lay my mits on).

Well it’ll be full of novices but they’ll mainly be on proper bikes. Wouldn’t worry about it, will definitely be good fun.

podgy – you used the phrase “the tension held in the grease” this would imply some friction.

And yes when grease gets dirty it does add friction and makes things sticky rather than adding lubrication.

Have you ever heard someone say “sticky grease”?

Could possibly be a crossmax freehub on a crossride wheel? Best check with a good bike shop. Kev at Skyline cycles at Afan knows his stuff when it comes to mavic wheels, or any other mavic accredited mechanic.

“he tension held in your rear mech will be higher than the tension held in the grease. therefore it cannot contribute to chain suck.”
That can’t be right – surely friction has something to do with chainstuck and the grease adds to the friction? no? Equation me!!!

Austen, the 1000’s were the 70km and the 2000’s were the 50km.

However that spreadsheet can tell you your exact result as lots of people who started the 70k on a 1??? board only finished the 50km. This is noted on the day by the marshalls but not reflected in the results published online.

On the day you can see your result printed up and posted to the back of the high5 finish tent.

matt_outandabou – thanks for correction on mandatory threshold for code. Didn’t know about HA requirements for code levels.

I like to be corner really quickly all the time, whatever the terrain, and never find myself hitting the brakes half way round.

To confuse matters further you should also look at the Strategy for Sustainable Construction 2008 which again sets lots of high level targets with little intention to produce new legislation.

However, there are lots of links to the CSH and you can see where other existing bits of regulation overlap with the code.

Think at 4hrs I was about 81st from 400ish riders. 3.5hr would be top 50ish. Top people were all under 3hrs.

I quite like the competitive element of the meridas, it’s not xc race “coughing up your lungs” pace but is still definitely a race if you want, as well as a personal challenge and a great day out in the hills.

Oh and it was rowan sorrell top welsh/international downhiller who designed/built the final downhill, so if its good enough for him its good enough for me :D

Grumble grumble. I haven’t ridden the raven but on the gorlech it’s a case of practice makes perfect.

If you were a bit better more practised you would ride the entire berm, I’d bet that you are missing out the first part of the berm and therefore getting spat out before completing the turn.

For what its worth I’ve just learnt that I can ride berms a lot better if remember to commit early to them.

You need to read the UKGBC consultation reports on definitions of Zero Carbon.
    http://www.ukgbc.org/site/resources/showResourceDetails?id=180

The code is currently entirely voluntary. However, as often happens voluntary measures become regulated after an initial testing/bedding in period.

Except in Wales where all houses planned after 1st April 2009 have to meet Level 3. So its a regulatory requirement enforceable by LA Planning Depts.

Also Wales has an aspiration target of zerocarbon newbuild homes by 2011! Though is this case aspirational target can probably be read as ministerial slip.

For your essay it might be useful to note how the Code reinforces/extends other regulatory regimes such as Site Waste management Plans, bits of the Building Regs and flood risk planning.

Mtb has definitely become less friendly as it has become more popular. But that’s normal right.

I remember when I were a lad, I could ride all day at glentress and not see a single other mountain biker. No hassles at all, although it was 80% fireroad.

These days afan is my local and you do meet a few people who aren’t the friendliest. Some people just aren’t used to speaking to strangers but most will chat if you rant at them for long enough.

Overall I do think the sport benefits from its popularity. And there’s still lots of places to ride if you want to get away from it all.

The ride from Port Talbot Station to Afan takes about 30minutes and is all offroad once you get past Tescos petrol station.

Train costs me about £2.20 from Swansea, though I know trains are a bit more expensive on the other side of the severn tunnel.

Oi TJ where is your evidence? You seem to be quoting from another website, hardly quality evidence?

    Evidence TandemJermey – evidence please.

Perhaps you have the Scottish Border Tourist Stategy 2009/10 to hand and to link. Or maybe some reports that were quoted on the internet blog site that you have linked above? (e.g. the actual presentation made by the Tourism Resources Company)

Since when was innerleithen.tv definitive? You’d be better off asking grannies in the tea shops than believing anything published on that link. Did you write it?

Hey I printed off a picture of her on here and pinned it on the wall of my office, right next to Allison Stokke (pole volt) and that amazing Aussie hockey woman.

What more attention does she need?!?
