Superb! Thanks STW’ers, I knew you would come up with the goods. They are staying at the Hilton Metropole but are keen to do the ‘village restaurant’ thing so the Malt Shovel at Barston looks a good option. Cheers Chaps!

I learned to drive in an Austin Metro…. My first car was a S2 Land Rover

Gah, only a part of my reply made it through. I was going to say, she’s at Southampton uni. I love the ideas for taking her out to somewhere new or showing her areas she hasn’t explored yet, she doesn’t drive so I imagine she would love to see some ‘sights’

My advise….. Look elsewhere. I had a Disco 3, 08. Full service history, low mileage for year but the first six months saw suspension issues, brake issues, electric issues, gearbox issues. Roughly £5k spent getting it sorted only to have the garage diagnose the gearbox as a 50:50 chance of it popping it’s clogs soon which would be a mahoooosive bill. Got shot of it after a year as couldn’t afford to throw more money at it. Shame really as it was an awesome car to drive but reliability is questionable.

Awesome, thanks squirelking, I was wondering if there would be a forum for this kind of thing.

So far I’ve managed to pick up a new Dewalt Orbital sander, a Makita belt sander, couple of hitachi drill/drivers mallets, hammers, squares etc. I’m looking at a rail saw for cutting panels, a compound sliding saw for cutting lengths/mitres, a jigsaw for curves and features, a router (large & small) for detailed edging. If I make small cabinets, what clamps would you recommend I use for holding the sides together while glueing/screwing? Thanks for all the help so far. Like I say, I’m a complete (but eager) novice so really appreciating all your help with this hobby.

Awesome guys, thanks for all the info. To start, I’m hoping to just make simple shelving and cabinets…. Mainly from reclaimed timbers from the rec yard. I won’t really be venturing into site work, just fancied learning how to recycle wood into furniture/storage items.

I don’t have the luxury of a tripod so I used the slow breathing out technique

A band saw.might not be ideal for letters requiring the inners cutting out as I can’t split the blade. Will have a look at the others mentioned. Thanks chaps

I went from a Discovery3 to a 2013 Vito Sport, never looked back. It’s faster, much faster than the Disco, granted not as luxurious as the Disco but does everything I want and the running costs are cheaper

Horrific crash but the marshal taking a face plant kinda takes the edge off it.

I had the chaps come out and fit an Alpine Double Din, focal speakers in the doors and an underseat subwoofer. Sounds bang tidy now

Tim Noakes (Banting) diet. Low carb high fat and cut out sugar. Works for me. 7.5kg lost in 3 months and more energy than I’ve ever had before.

Yeah, 35 is what they have me down for. It’s a country lane that has 8 houses on it and the 30 is enforced for the residents of said houses… Like I say, my fault for not slowing down from 50 quicker. Bit of a bummer really as I’m always careful but hey ho.. Momentary lapse of concentration and all that.

What are the speed awareness courses like? Do they have a pass/fail type test at the end?

With the amount of hilarious witty banter on this thread, I think the Beeb need to rethink their new presenters.

I was toying with just replacing the head unit first but the guy gave a reasonable quote for new speakers etc so decided to just get it all done. The Sound is so bad at the moment I was kinda desperate to get change it asap

Don’t worry, it’s only a small sub (plus there’s no rust on my Vito)

I’ve managed to find a really decent mobile car audio specialist. He’s installing an alpine double din unit, Hertz components in the doors and a small sub under the middle passenger seat. It will work nicely with the steering wheel controls too.

Thanks mate. I’ve got a really good Alpine unit with all the necessary outputs etc but was worried it wouldn’t operate the steering controls. If there’s a magic box of tricks that would allow that, that is awesome. its been many many years since I bought speakers for a car and I’m not sure of what are the makes to look out for. Budget isn’t an option as I really do like my music to sound good.

Oh and that T5…. Was sold days ago. That’s the third car in a row now that has been sold and it was an old advert. Slightly annoying.

My current car is a Discovery 3, love it but it’s just too nice and not big on load space for my needs.

Many thanks for all your replies. I’ve seen a rather nice Sportline T5 that ticks the boxes so will line up an appointment to go see it this weekend (if it’s still for sale).

Thanks for all the replies. Can I just ask, those that have commented about how awful the defenders are they referring to the newer puma engined ones or the older type Deafeners? I have heard the newer ones are a bit more ‘sorted’.

Series 2 and Disco 3 owner in a previous life but never owned a newer defender, I thought they were supposed to be a bit more civilised than their older models. I’m all set to go buy a T5 but then saw the 110 and thought hmmmmm

I live on a rural estate with a working farm. The roads are not the best especially when it rains etc I need a larger vehicle for transporting furniture and it will double up as a bike/dog wagon. The T5 ticks the box for space and comfort, the Landy will probably cope with getting covered in shite better…. Unlike our current cars.

Yes, it’s the Wolf Run. TBH I’m only doing it as a family thing so it won’t be anything too serious and not interested in times/finishing positions. Kinda hoping it will kick start me into getting back on the bike and exercising. Lost my mojo for all things 2 wheeled and dirty and it’s been months since I last went for a ride.

Given the how expensive they are now 2nd hand, I’m guessing the T5 will be worth more come resale time. I’m looking to keep whatever I get for a very very long time, so the lower mileage/newer transit looked more appealing than a higher mileage/slightly older T5. But maybe newer isn’t a sensible buy in this case?

Do they not have a quick release system? Un bolting them from the floor every time could be a PITA
