I had a Clio diesel for a week late last year, it was fine, went nicely and seemed pretty efficient (was also a nice metallic red, other colours are available). However, I found the seat had very little support and after a 90 mile motorway drive was ready to stand up for a while. I also had to have the seat almost all the way back so there was very little legroom in the rear seats (I’m 6’2″).

I’ve had a test drive in the new Superb, I think it’s a great mile muncher, handles well (as far as I could tell on an accompanied test drive) and very comfy, loads of room for driver and passengers and plenty of toys (no CD player though).

Not driven the Kia but based on my experience I’d definitely go for the Superb.

    I currently drive a 2010 Superb FWIW.

There are millions of trees there and I’m sure the woodland wouldn’t be any worse off for 2 less fewer trees

    FTFY

And yes, it would be worse off

    Thanks Slowster.
Cable moves the mech ok any the shifter moves the cable.
It appears that the mech simply isn’t moving enough to actually make the chain change cogs so I’m stuck on the middle ring.
The front mech doesn’t reach the stop screw in either direction so it isn’t that.

Mech seems to move by hand.

Not done any fettling of road shifters before so a bit cautious about fiddling and making it worse

“aquafaba. this is the holy grail of vegan yorkshire pudding ingredients.
it is basically the liquid from a can of chickpeas, and can be pretty much used as a direct replacement for eggs in your regular recipe. it’s seriously miraculous stuff. honestly, just google it and take your pick from the results…”

That’s all fine and dandy but what the hell do you do with the leftover chick peas?
Dogs and cats won’t touch them, they’re definitely unfit for human consumption and it seems very wasteful to just throw them away

What does your wife think of the redundancy/3 days in Oslo options?
In reality her support/acceptance of the new arrangements will be a major factor in whether it works or not.
FWIW I’d be trying the short week in Oslo option for a bit and then taking the redundancy if it wasn’t right for you all. I did a similar commute from Leeds into Dublin (I’m about an hour from Leeds Bradford airport) for 2 years, usually 2 days a week but often 3. It was manageable once we all settled into the routine.

I don’t think the OP has disc brakes looking at that wheel!

    Posted 11 hours ago # Report-Post

I think the OP does have disc brakes looking at that wheel given the light coating of dust* on what would be the rim braking surface

*may actually be really thick with mud

IMO it depends on how much rearrangement is required, if you just want to put it back by an hour or move it to the afternoon it’s likely to be much less of an issue than if you want to shift it to Thursday (for example).

    mt & yak, +1 also.

Climbing trad is almost a different sport from climbing bolted routes, part of the fun and the challenge is the gear placement.

The physical climbing may be the same but the consideration of options for protection, the selection and placement of the gear all adds to the experience IMO.

    (another oldgit climber ;-) )

Definitely worth it IMO, means you can ventilate the area without opening a awindow if required.
This can reduce it from “I’d give it 20 mins if I were you” to “it should be ok in 5 mins”

Sounds as though there’s a few of us in the area, anyone up for a forum ride out sometime?

Clearly the 1st signs are a warning about the bit of uneven surface between the yellow lines.

I suspect that the 2nd signs say something like “Cyclists, you can go as fast as you like now because the next bit is really smooth and you’re all really cool and groovy people” 8)

You’re just down the road from me.

IMO you need a car (or to ride 8/10 miles out of Thirsk) to get to decent trails.

There’s some decent riding along the edge of the moors between Osmotherley and Kilburn, the area around Sutton Bank is OK but personally I avoid the waymarked trails as IMO there’s better riding to be had in the area.

But then, I’m only partially Gnarr and can only demonstrate entry-level Radness so YMMV

Thanks folks, I just need to be able to fit a large 29er hardtail inside with the seats down(don’t mind removing the front wheel as I have to do that currently).
My target is to be able to get 50mpg on average from whatever I get as that’s about what I get with my current car.
Off to the local Volvo garage at lunchtime to kick a few tyres ;-)

Well if you wanted to kill the patient then maybe. It lowers blood pressure and therefore would be a very bad thing to take should you already have low blood pressure.
Fair enough avdave. It was a half remembered fact. I remember it was originally intended as another treatment altogether. I really didn’t want to google Viagra while at work!

I had an 09 plate Mazda 6, one of the nicest cars I’ve owned.

Quick, economical, comfy, handled nicely, stood up to family/mtb related abuse well over the 4 years and 90k miles I had it.

Very likely to get a diesel auto estate 6 later this year when I change my current car.

FWIW I’ve test driven in the last 4 months the Mazda 6, E and C class Merc estates, Superb Estate (not the current shape), BMW 5 series estate and the Volvo v70.

IMO the Mazda gives the best combo of purchase cost/running costs/standard kit/comfort/handling. Looking at 2/3 yrs old models for all the above.

I had this (though not as severely) and discovered that the main factors were, in no particular order…

My favourite biking socks were quite tight at the ankle hole so were cutting off circulation to my feet, bought new socks with a looser top and problem diminished, and

I stopped tying my shoelaces quite so tightly.

Crap reasons really but I was surprised what a difference they made.

    YMMV

Edit. Also I now keep my biking shoes (5-10 impacts) in the top of the airing cupboard during the winter months so they’re toasty warm when I put them on 8)

Surely you mean “to pluck arbitrarily” ?

I would have thought “to arbitrarily pluck”.

Assuming you don’t wish to split any infinitives it can be either “to pluck arbitrarily” or “arbitrarily to pluck” but not “to arbitrarily pluck”

This is because “to pluck” is the infinitive form of the verb so should remain as such with any adjectives applied to the beginning or end.

    HTH

    Thanks for the replies folks.
I had a feeling that height might be an issue (although I hadn’t realised how tall my bike was until I went and measured it).
I currently use a towbar mounted rack if there’s a few bikes to transport but like to stick them inside if there’s only one or two of them.
@wobliscot, that internal rack looks rather smart
