I had a 60 plate SE 140 bhp hatchback/Twindoor with the DSG box until last September.

Excellent car in so many ways, quiet, comfy, plenty quick enough, I got around 46 mpg average during my ownership.

I had it for 3 years and put about 70k miles on it, nothing needed doing apart from normal service items. Got 35k miles off a set of Michelin Cross Climates on it.

It had a towbar already fitted<span style=”font-size: 0.8rem;”> I got it so I used a Thule towbar bike rack, 3 bikes on the back and a adults inside didn’t affect it at all.</span>

    I’d certainly recommend one.

£4.5 k for the car you describe looks about right to me but YMMV.

The race goes past the end of our road tomorrow.

However, as I’m chief Tourmaker in our town I should get a prime spot at a potentially tricky right-hander 😀

    Thanks folks.

It’s for on road, touring rather than racing, hence wanting one I can access easily for snacks/camera/other things.

Will have a look at the light extender thingys, there is a sort of plastic extender thing on the Topeak handlebar bracket but the loop handle on the top of the bag gets in the way of the light *rolls eyes*

Indicators built into the front light cluster and inboard of the headlight is very poor design IMO & IME, makes the indicator very difficult to see, especially when the headlight is on.

This design feature was one of the reasons for rejecting a couple of VAG vehicles when I chose my current car.

Headlight cluster with built in LED DRLs plus a completely separate front indicator (and a mirror repeater) FTW.

Wouldn’t it be easier to have the studs in the ground and the ice on your feet? Would mean we don’t have to throw away some perfectly good pedals at least.

Now that is a brilliant idea

    My 2p.

I looked at the (2/3/4 year old) A6 and E Class last year as well as the Volvo V60 (different sizes I know…)

I found the seats in the Audi far too firm, coming from a 7 year old Superb.  The Merc seats were too wide for me and I didn’t feel secure in it round corners, not ragging it, just driving normally.  I hasten to add I’m  not particularly thin…

Overall the seats in the Volvo were by far the most comfy IME.  This alone put me off the Audi and Merc (also the salesman at my local Audi dealer was a weapons grade twunt).

Having said that I bought something completely different… :-D

A number of years ago (late 90’s) I changed jobs and got rid of the company car.

When insuring my own car I was asked about 3 accidents which I’d allegedly had over the past 4 years.

All of these had involved member of staff at the firm I’d left who had pranged one or other of the pool cars.  The pool cars were my responsibility so I dealt with the insurance and repairs.

Once I’d explained this my insurance was unaffected.

The point of this little anecdote is that if an insurance company can connect me with accidents in which I had no involvement (other than sorting out the aftermath) then I’m absolutely sure they can link a driver who has a bump in someone else’s car.

    I’d declare it.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it, if anything it establishes a pattern of behaviour on the part of the driver.

There’s a couple of vehicles local to me which I see being driven in a borderline antisocial manner fairly frequently, I don’t know exactly where the drivers live but it can’t be far away.

I only notice them because (IMO) they drive stupidly, I’m sure there are plenty of similarly local drivers whom I don’t notice because they don’t draw attention to themselves.

    Thanks folks.

Given that the role in question is definitely not one for a new graduate and the potential applicant obtained a Desmond 25 years ago I’m of the view that varied and relevant experience in the intervening years now than makes up for any perceived shortfall in educational achievements.

As has been pointed out by some above ^, the question is, does anyone really want to work for a company which takes such a narrow view of people’s skills?

We were discussing the potential practicalities of using NV goggles for night rides instead of lights in a post ride pub stop recently.

A bit of googling suggests that “not at all suitable for use on an MTB at night” is the default position.

You know you’re probably middle-aged if you feel a sense of relief when bin collections return to the regular schedule after being altered over the Christmas break.

My initial thought was to fix the BB of the rear frame in the rear dropouts of the front frame and then secure the headtube of the rear frame by threading it onto the seat tube of the front frame but, rather inconveniently, the angles and tube lengths don’t allow this elegant bodgetastic method so I shall have to resort to doing it properly :D

Good idea IMO although by my reading of it only some of it will actually be in The North as everyone knows that The North is above a line drawn from the mouth of the Mersey to the mouth of the Humber and a fair bit of the proposed forest will therefore be in The Midlands

Chez Wombat we play a Christmas tree decorating game whereby Mrs Wombat decorates the tree and at some point before the big day Ms Wombat (18) and I select an additional decoration to add to the tree and we see how long before it remains in place before it is noticed and removed by The Authorities (Mrs W).

Last year our 29p sparkly polystyrene parcel from Yorkshire Trading made it all the way through until 12th night. :-)

Sadly this year’s contribution, a plastic pelican, lasted less than 24 hours before it was banished to the rear of the tree :-(

Walk through a crowded place, when you find a person who smells good to you, tell them you think that smell nice and ask them what scent they use.
Go to Superdrug and buy some of that.
    Good luck.

Why not just dismantle it entirely and pack all the componants individually into foam lined boxes whai have already been made specially to fit exactly the floorplan of the van’s load area?

This way nothing will scratch anything else and you’ll improve the handling of the van by lowering the centre of gravity of the vehicle….probably.

For those that know the area, how hardtail (Stanton Switchback)friendly is it? Would it make much difference compared with 160mm bike?

It’s fine on a hardtail, I ride that area every couple of weeks or so on a fully rigid Krampus and haven’t died yet.

    YMMV obvs

Are the readers tainted by association?

My father in law reads it. He has some interesting opinions which I am occasionally happy to disabuse him of.

Most of the time I like a quiet life though…

    Same here.

If he askes me to buy him a copy while I’m at the shop I hide it inside a copy of Razzle or Goat Gimp Quarterly to reduce the embarrassment.

I’ve removed the dealer sticker from the rear window of my car purely because it was positioned immediately below the central brake light.

It lit up the entire rear screen (and my rear view mirror) with red light every time I braked during the hours of darkness.

Ironically as it was stuck to the inside of the window it was virtually invisible from the outside due to the (standard factory fitted) tinted rear glass :D
