Thanks folks, will check out my local army surplus emporium.

Unfortunately changing out of the suit trousers isn’t really practical as I’m doing a number of short (1 to 2 mile) journeys between sites/offices during the day so just want something I can quickly pull on over my regular clothes if its raining so I don’t have to spend much of the day in wet trousers.

I run an Alfine 11 on my Krampus and my mate runs a Rohloff on a BFe.

I don’t feel the need to go back to derailleurs on the Krampus.

I do run derailleurs on my road & pub bikes and they do feel different.

I’ve worked out that any perceived additional drag in the Alfine can easily be overcome by getting fitter ;-)

    Just back from the dealer.

I have now seen what needs to be done as coincidentally they had another car (same manufacturer but different model) in the workshop with similar issue (not caused by the garage on that occasion).

They’re going to get the necessary replacement fitting which fortunately is bolted to the structure of the roof so should be less than an hour to fix. Their challenge for the garage will be getting the repair done before the end of this week as I’ve told them I need the roofrack fully useable before the weekend.

I did ask if I could watch and was told that I was welcome to view them carrying out the works if I wanted to but it would need to be from an office overlooking the repair bay (no issue with that for me).

Repairs have been certified by the manufacturer as its the main dealer’s bodyshop.

Bit of an update for anyone interested.

Got the car back a couple of weeks ago and the repairs looked really good although the dealer was waiting for the replacement bike carriers, roof bars and a trim strip to cover the roofrack mounting points.

Bike carriers and roof bars arrived last week.

Trim strip was fitted today so I thought I’d make sure the new roof bars would fit as I didn’t want to fit them without the trim strip in place..

Unfortunately the threaded sockets into which the front roof bar fits have been put in about 1mm too high so I can’t tighten up the front roof bar.

Back to the dealer in the morning I go.

Have been very calm so far. That may well change tomorrow…

    Thanks for the replies.
Will be emailing the garage over the weekend with a list of requirements.
Independent certification sounds like a good plan.
If they won’t do that I’ll tell them they can fit me a towbar instead and I’ll switch to a rear mounted carrier.

The front mounting points are bent. They are threaded sockets under the roof trim strips.
Agree about structural concerns, not sure how to check the integrity of the repair.
There’s no way they’ll replace the whole car, it’s under 2 years old and has just (yesterday) had its 36k service.

I think the valleter was probably dealers own staff.

    @wrightyson
yes, I think it’ll be a swine of a job, they said they need the car for 3 days (courtesy car provided). So a couple of bike carriers for £100 each is a drop in the ocean, particularly as they’ll probably be OEM kit (rebadged Thule) so effectively at cost price.

I’ll certainly be inspecting the car very closely before amd after. Have already got pics of the damage.

The manufacturer’s OEM carriers are rebadged Thule ones (as are the roof bars) so I suspect that those would be what was offered.
Don’t have an issue with that.

I’ve got the 3rd set of bottle bosses under the downtube of my road/tourer (Dawes Galaxy FTW).

I’ve got one of the plastic Lezyne Flow cage with a Decathlon plastic tool caddy/bottle in it, seems to be solid enough.

It holds 2x inner tubes (28×1.24), 2x Pedros tyre levers, patches, multitool, spare chainlink, C02 canister and a tiny inflator plus a few examination gloves jammed in there for oily repairs at the roadside and to stop everything from rattling. I also have a small pump attached to the frame.

The cage grips the bottle well although I have wrapped a couple of turns of black insulating tape around it to keep it in place just to be safe. It looks alright as the whole assembly is black.

Only gets used on road/cycleway so doesn’t get shaken about as much as an MTB would.

In the traditional “recommend what you have” styleeee.

Krampus with 120mm shocks (huge fun when rigid but IMO absolutely brilliant with a bit of front sus) would be my choice. Very capable, fast and comfy for a long day in the saddle.

The only bike I’ve ever owed which I’d not consider selling.

Create a minor mechanical issue (deflate one of your tyres/un-index gears), take bike to LBS for repair.
    Leave bike, go for lunch.
Return to to LBS, pay for the repair.
Bike is secure for the day.

(Not intended as a particularly serious suggestion…)

a gallon of cold water weighs 10 pounds

Hey grandad, we went metric decades ago!

    1 litre = 1 Kg

Under your new-fangled metric system do you still need to allow for the weight of the bucket? ;-)

If you need to calibrate your bathroom scales a gallon of cold water weighs 10 pounds.

Remember to allow for the weight of the bucket

Using the traditional principle of recommend what you own…Osprey Flapjack.

Mine is 5 years old and has be used/abused on pretty much a daily basis and is still looking good.

Comfy to carry, has a waist strap for stability on the bike, zipped bottle pocket which will take a 500ml Sigg. Padded laptop section etc, etc….

In the loft I have a Technics CD player, Yamaha Amp and a pair of Acoustic Research speakers dating from 1988, a JVC turntable from early 1989 and a Kenwood cassette deck from later 1989 all neatly packed away in their original boxes and polystyrene.

They will be redeployed later this year…..

@Rickos, I;ve not mounted mine on my helmet but I did with an old Hope Vision 2. I just cable tied the battery to the vents at the back of the helmet.

The weight wasn’t much of an issue after a ride or 2 as i just got used to it.

I did need to secure the cable to the top of the helmet with a couple of velcro straps to stop it rattling though.

We’re looking to be within a couple of miles (walking distance) of the station/city centre for easy access to transport/theatre/gigs/pubs/restaurants so nothing outside the ringroad really.
Also really want to be on the Northern half of the City as I need to be able to get to Teesside/Tyneside by car relatively easily (accepting the limitations of the ring road).

I can get to pretty much wherever I need to be for work mostly by train (with the assistance of an as yet un-purchased folding bike).

We’re only moving from Northallerton so I already know the NY Moors pretty well for riding, perhaps a future STW ride out is in order….
We’re looking to be within a couple of miles (walking distance) of the station/city centre for east access to transport/theatre/gigs/pubs/restaurants so nothing outside the ringroad for us.

I bought a set of these on the back of this PSA and am very impressed.

Well made, good clamp, plenty bright enough and the individually adjustable height of the 2 light barrels means that you can fine tune the lighting.

IMO these would be decent value at full price but for £46 they’re an absolute bargain..

Your Plan B looks like a winner to me.

If the ride is flat(tish) both ends then a singlespeed folder (Kansi or similar) would be ideal.

Leaving a bike out in all weathers and with very limited maintenance opportunities at the office end would, IMO, end up very quickly with a pretty much unserviceable bike.

Also, what would you do if you get to the office station and find some scrote has nicked your ride?

Anyone who says “Can I get…” in any establishment which isn’t self service should be slapped.

I was in a non-chain coffee shop recently and the youth in front of me in the queue said to the barista.
“Can I get a hot chocolate and a cookie please?”
    The barista replied
“No, I have to pass them to you”.

I grinned heartily and tipped him well.

Having spotted a typo now its too late to edit the original post I;d like to point out the the date should read 1980s, not 1908s.

    I’m not quite that old…..
