When I last changed my car I drove the 520d,, Audi A6 Avant, Merc E Class Estate, Volvo V70, Mazda 6 and ended up getting a Superb Hatch (well, it’s a sort of saloon/hatch fancy boot lid thing but you get the idea).

All the above were between 2 and 4 years old and had Auto boxes.

The BMW and Audi were OK but I found the ride to be very harsh round town, was OK at motorway speeds though. The salesmen were a utter tools (different people, both at main dealers).

Merc was very nice, quiet, smooth, salesman was OK. Car wasn’t worth (to me) the running costs or the higher initial purchase price.

The Volvo was nice but didn’t do it for me.

Mazda was OK, felt rather choppy on the road but lacked rear legroom.

Superb was half the price of the Merc, BMW or Audi to buy and around 40% cheaper to insure, is quiet, has loads of room inside, is comfortable and I can easily get around 48mpg (calculated on Fuelly), servicing at my local independent VAG garage is reasonably priced, I really like the DSG box and I also like that most people simply don’t get what a good car it is.

EDIT, have done 28k miles in 15 months in it and still would choose it over the others that I test drove it against

I find the seats really comfy, can easily do 150 miles without a stop (unless I need a wee or some coffee or a Ginsters  ) and still feel fine when I arrive.

It did take a bit of fiddling to get them just right though.

I nearly bought an E-Class instead but it was twice the price and I found the Merc seats were too wide, I felt as though I was sitting in the middle of a sofa rather than in an armchair.

    EDIT

Also the Superb has a proper spare wheel rather than runflats or a pram wheel spare

Skoda Superb, comfy, surprisingly quick, inexpensive to buy and run, acres of rear legroom, massive boot, quiet on motorways.

I’ve got a 60 plate diesel and get 48/50 mpg. I gather petrol versions get high 30s/40 mpg

    Wot whyme said…

Open the jaws of the chuck fully, put an appropriately sized hex key into the socket and unscrew whilst using a spanner on the flats to prevent the motor spindle from turning HTH

I get really confused by 24 hour clock times.

I’ve looked at a meeting start time of, say, 15-30 and thought “who the hell has a meeting at half past 5?” 8O

    I’m 46

    My name is Tom.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti had a pet wombat called Tom.

Based on the above, it seemed appropriate.

I bought a simple waterproof pouch from my local(ish) RNLI shop.

Used it a few times and hasn’t leaked. Cost £3.50 IIRC.

I have a waterproof phone so it’s more about keeping clag off that actual waterproofing for me but it hasn’t leaked yet.

I’ve just recently got a set on my Skoda Superb.

Done about 1.5k miles on them so far. They’re very quiet, almost disconcertingly so.

They grip very well, no wheel spin pulling away from the lights on wet and greasy roads. Seem to grip very well in mud. Very smooth round corners on tarmac.

I’m doing around 18-20k miles a year so would expect to get a year’s motoring out of a set of fronts, time (and miles) will tell how well they wear in the longer term.

I did need all 4 tyres replacing anyway so putting a full set on wasn’t an issue, they cost IIRC £7 more per tyre than a mid-range summer tyre. Well worth every penny IMO

Good point on the fluid ration, hadn’t thought of that.
Wasn’t intending on having a rear axle, was going for independent rear wheels (with no suspension) so we can use standard bike wheels if at all possible.

IME it is actually illegal to install or use (or possibly even possess) jamming equipment.

I was asked a similar question by a client in relation to a new build office building about 18 months ago, took legal advice and was told it’s covered in the (IIRC) wireless and telegraphy act.

For some reason quite a lot of steelwork was used in the final design, including a fair bit of foil backed plasterboard….can’t think why.
