Another point worth remembering is that most insurance companies will let you transfer your car NCB to use on a van insurance policy but very few, if any, will allow you to go the other way and transfer van NCB back to a car insurance policy.

a marked Volvo estate (I have the vehicle reg, time, location, etc) joins the road just behind me, me having passed the slip road, and proceeds to accelerate to a speed that would see Joe Public pulled over (I had an indictaed 74mph on the clock, which I know equals 70mph in reality). He then proceeds to tailgate other traffic to bully it out of the way so he has free run along lane 2. At this point I can see what’s coming so move back to lane 1 at the safest possible opportunity, having completed an overtake myself, and before he can get close to me.

Sounds to me like you need to concentrate more on your own driving and where you’re going rather than watching everything that’s going on behind you.

I’ve been looking for something similar, I’m wanting to run a set of Salsa Woodchipper bars but can’t with hydraulic discs 🙁
I don’t much fancy going back to road brakes/shifters and canti’s.

did a first aid course years age where the instructor spent quite a lot of time telling us about people who’d been sue’d after giving First Aid

He even talked about getting people to sign waivers before we did First Aid on them.. (assuming they were conscious!!)

Your instructor was obviously a bit of a pillock then.
Having looked into this before on behalf of a friend, we pretty much concluded that no-one in the UK’s ever been sued for administering first aid. This was a while ago so it might have changed by now but I very much doubt it.
This covers much of the law regarding rendering first aid to people:

Thanks for the link, most likely I’m going to try and keep them nice and clean then get a professional to give them a proper service in the springtime. Just hoping they stand up to a bit of UK filth better than Fox.

I’ve never had any bother with either my RS or Fox forks. I just make a point of rinsing the mud off the stanchions after a ride, give them a quick wipe to dry them then give them a quick spray with some Juice Lubes Fork Juice.
Seems to keep them working the way they’re meant to!

Do people regularly self-service Rockshox? Most likely will give them to Evans next year for a service at some stage.

As long as you’re not a complete muppet with anything mechanical, they’re pretty easy to service.
You can download the service manual here:
    http://www.sram.com/service/rockshox/7
And have a look to see what they’re like to service.

Roger Musson’s book for me too.
Easy to understand and all well described.

I’m just in the process of deciding which components to buy then I’ll be using it to help me build my first set of wheels.

Wisepranker – a student driving like that with me would be given the option of slowing down or getting out of the cab. Simple

Strangely enough, that’s exactly what happened.
It was closely followed by him being told that if he drove like a dick again when I was in the motor with him, we’d be back to station and I’d be refusing to work with him.
I think he got the idea 😀

I can assure you that there are very very few who have a ‘gung-ho’ attitude

You’ve obviously not met any of our student paramedics.

Generally with next to no driving experience, the only time they’ve driven anything bigger than a car is when they paid out a small fortune to get through their C1 test, then a three week service driving course. They have it drummed in to them by some university lecturers, who are pretty out of touch with reality, that they are going to be superheroes and must get to every job in less than the 8 minute target set by the Government.

Being on a blue light run with them can be absolutely terrifying. How more people aren’t killed or injured by them, I’ll never know 😯

Cheap and pretty easy to use.

That said i would not like to be the one with the lights making the call tbh but he made the wrong one and his cautionary speed was enough to kill him when he hit him.

Sad events and I am not sure what we can do to ever prevent this happening and i dont feel the need to lynch mob him.
It can be a difficult call to make sometimes. Things like this just go to show how severe the consequences can be if you get it wrong.
As far as I’m concerned, the driving is the most stressful part of the job in the ambulance service and not particularly enjoyable.
Speaking for myself and many of my colleagues, the only way to try and prevent things like this happening is to slow down and that’s exactly what a lot of us do now. No point in driving flat out to get to a job and either having a bump or getting stressed out by it!

It’s expected for ambulances, fire engines and police to go fast through lights and driver at speed

No it’s not. In fact they’re supposed to do anything but go fast through lights.
As someone said above, red lights are to be treated as a Give Way, nothing else. The way we were taught was that we should come to a stop to check the junction’s clear before proceeding through it.

Merlin are doing Stans Arch on Deore M525s for £120. Bargain I think as the extra weight is in the hubs and good rims that can be rehubbed when needed. I’d regrease the hubs on purchase though

That sounds like a pretty good deal.
I might have to go for a set of those with some knobbly tyres as off-road wheels for my Roadrat 🙂

Is your rear wheel central in the rear chain stays? Do you have the hub adaptors in the correct sides? Might just be the camera angle mind.

Yes, the wheel’s central. I think it’s just the camera angle.

The SLX double+bash crankset is basically a modified triple isn’t it? If so your front ring is already in the right place. I’m running 1×10 on a Soul and although the chainline looks quite extreme on the biggest (36t) sprocket it works just fine.

As far as I’m aware it’s just a modified triple so in theory it should be ok, I might try a coupe of spacers to see if it helps.
I’ll grab a picture of it and post it up. Can you let me know how it looks compared to yours?

I’ve just had a play with it and swapped the BB spacer from the DS to the NDS, it doesn’t make a huge difference.
Just to clarify, the chainline is ok when I’m in the 11t sprocket but when I change up to the 36t it’s terrible!

I find it really interesting what they’re trying (and succeeeding IMHO) to do. Other publications seem to be in a race to the bottom. Make it digital only? Make it free? Fund it purely through advertising? Its been disastrous for standards of journalism, with a lot of it nowadays being barely disguised advatorials.

Have you read IMB Magazine? It’s all of the above, digital only, free and funded through advertising. It’s still, in my opinion, a far better read than MBR or MBUK and is easily as good, if not better than, Singletrack.

The BFe uses a standard HT2 bottom bracket, like the one that’ll come with your new SLX crankset. It’s a 73mm BB and the spacers should come with the cranks as well.

The only obvious thing I’d do to save a few quid is not bother with the XTR cables and use the standard ones which will come with the SLX shifters.

I still read many, but just don’t buy any. Mainly read them in airport lounges and on aeroplanes. I’ve taken a real liking to reading Superyachtworld before a flight, as it happens!

You need to try and find an airport where you can pick up free copies of the Red Bull magazine, Red Bulletin.
Probably the best free airport magazine you can get 😀

I’m a digital subscriber but find that I never actually read the PDF mag.
I use the forum and the rest of the site but I don’t actually enjoy reading the magazine on an iPad.

I’m trying to decide whether to go back to a print subscription, at least that way I’ll be reading the mag!

If it’s an alloy Hope freehub body, it will be worth whipping the cassette off every couple of months to see if the cassette is eating into the freehub body splines.

It’s already started to chew up the freehub a little. I think I’ll be getting a steel one next time round.

From Greenwich, get to Tower Bridge, go over the bridge and aim for Kingsland Road, the A10. Keep following it north until you get to the A406, follow this westbound round to the A41, A41 north and follow the signs for Stanmore then park at the station.
Shouldn’t take much more than 45 minutes this time of day.
One word of warning though, with the NFL game at Wembley today, people will start to do the same thing and go sight seeing before heading to the game. The car park might get busy quickly today.

I reported pushironwill a couple of times for being a scammer and he’s still trading. Another trader I reported is still on the go as well. It seems that it was a waste of time and effort even bothering to report it.

I was lucky that I paid him by Paypal. He claimed it was his girlfriends Paypal account he was using but it turned out to be a friend of his who most definitely wasn’t his girlfriend!
I put a Paypal claim in when I got sick of the excuses, spoke to the woman who’s Paypal account it was and it all started to unfold then.
I got my money back off the woman who’s Paypal account it was, she ended up having all sorts of problems with him in the end.
If you’re interested, he buys and sells on eBay as intense.ern

Like I say, I reported him to the STW mods more than once as they say they’ll deal with scammers but they appear to have ignored me.

Had the same problem with him over a frame a while back. Reported him to the mods on here but nothing was done about it!
    Definitely one to avoid.
