“Bikes look better with dust caps I tell you.”

Sometimes hypothetical milliseconds count more than aesthetics – this is one of those times.

epicsteve – I salute you. If you are going to go bad, go bad to excess. My LBS wont sell Roubaixs, it suggests these instead

you do have too many headset spacers but you dont have to take shit from people who leave their valve caps on pretending they know the score

The roady threads on here are definitely an MTB perspective on roadying though – very kit oriented and totally clueless on pro racing.

If you dont like them, dont click, it’s easy.

There’s quite a bit of surface water but in-between the puddles it’s quite grippy

If you keep to the original trail line rather than puddle-dodge then you will end up with a lot of sand on your brakes and drivetrain after a couple of trails which will make things sound a bit agricultural

    (was up there last night)

(I see the ranger has finally got fed up of the rooty stunt drop next to Holmbury lookout – or fed up of people moaning about it – either way it’s blocked for good now. I assume it was Ranger someone has felled a bloody great tree across it)

Northwind it would be so nice if we could get sensible about this like you lot or our Scandy cousins but in the meantime… I will try harder next time 🙂

any rider caught on footpaths I administer will get a stern talking to…

…in the course of which I will make sure they are well aware of the best cheeky features and drops on our local trails and singletrack, er, footpaths.

Seriously we have a speeding problem in our village, and even the most stuff and bureacratic members of the PC are all for encouraging permissive use of footpaths by bikes as noone wants a dead kid or dad splattered on a village road.

When it’s put in those terms people tend to see the problem in a different way, and it becomes much less of a problem – given expectations of a minimum level of courtesy to walkers, horses etc

here’s the PC filing cabinet for complaints about riding on paths

    (obvious troll must try harder)

As rights of way officer on my parish council I am disgusted by the selfish attitudes and disregard for local bureaucracy and political discourse shown in this thread.

You will give MTB a bad name.

Whether its Hurtwood, Winterfold, or Leith I think we can clearly see that in working forests the ‘mtb erodes/harms the environment’ line is utter BS. If we couldnt see that before…

I much prefer something honest like ‘its our land so if you want to ride on it please ride where we ask you to’.

    Rule #60
    / Ditch the washer-nut and valve-stem cap
    (2 violations)
    Rule #41
/ Quick-release levers are to be carefully positioned
    (front forward of fork)
    Rule #58
/ Support your local bike shop.
    Rule #73
/ Gear and brake cables should be cut to optimum length.

Cables should create a perfect arc around the headtube and, whenever possible, cross under the downtube. Right shifter cable should go to the left cable stop and vice versa.

“don’t want to be doing anything to antagonise the landowner.”

I wouldn’t worry about that. He will concrete over half of Surrey and fly in 300 747s a day given half a chance. If you are local then a fair chunk of your parish council stipend will be spent in clerk’s time writing objections to his hair-brained schemes.

Antagonising him is your civic duty.

Just remember – careless talk costs trails.

al – more annoyance can be caused by clipping your jeans into one of these – I find it adds an extra frisson of delight to making the recent roady converts blow out of their arses.

jeans, t-shirt, flouro ankle band, i even put my visor back on my helmet to liven up the commute with a bit of a hustle – does this make me a bad person?

Think you’ll find the Hitler vid will have been taken down because of infringement of copyright – nothing to do with the subject!

That’s what I assumed – but surely a link is not a copyright infringement? And while I respect STW’s desire to protect other’s copyright – I fail to see the difference between that ‘homage’ and ‘Sleepless in the Saddle’ well except the Hitler/hurtwood video is actually funny…

yep those are off Hurtwood land and shouldnt be ridden you very bad boys , the switchbacks one has been made unrideable in any case

might be worth editing a bit of the detail out that post, just a suggestion

Joolsburger – someone was trying to get something going a few months ago, but it all seems to have gone quiet. Maybe Mark (not Ranger Mark) could post a few words and let people know what is going on?

tyredbiker – perception is everything, posting about ‘new’ trails on Interwebs and using four different names for the same trail all creates a perception of more MTB among people who keep an eye on these forums who are not bikers.

Just for the avoidance of doubt, there are a vociferous group of Peaslake residents for whom:

MORE TRAILS = MORE MTB = END OF PEASLAKE AS THEY KNOW IT

Hurtwood want to keep these people sweet, or at least minimise their reasons for moaning, so it is in our interests to make the sensible amount of noise, rather than lots of it.

If you have even two or three braincells it really is very easy to find trails, work out boundaries, by looking on maps, asking people, PMing them and so on. I am happy to help people avoid trespass 😉 if they PM, but noone ever seems to bother taking the offer up.

Another way that people can help with this perception problem is, if it is possible to avoid riding at weekends. Or at least not park in the centre of the village and mince about at the bus stop.

Does anyone know why the Peaslake Hitler vid was taken down the first time it was put up?

(Dangerously close to Godwin’s law there so I’m out, scratched record by now anyway)

I didnt say you wouldn’t be wrecked 🙂 – I’d be a minute away from full bonk meltdown – if I wanted to ride longer than that then would use energy drink and eat

2 hours is probably a more sensible limit

I’ve deffo shed some timber since I’ve been using it on shorter rides, although it is not the only factor I’m sure it has helped

what t-i-m said plus a million

teamhurtmore – that’s enough now pretty pls STFU 🙂 – if you have questions of that nature then you can email me and I will help you work out which trails are ‘sanctioned’ which are rideable but best kept quiet and which are trespass (but still ride them, just be prepared to act dumb and definitely dont post about them). I am sure there are plenty of others who have participated in this thread who would extend the same courtesy.

You will also be amazed how many riders will go straight past ‘secret’ trails seemingly with their eyes closed oblivious to their presence. That is their loss, if you ride around with your eyes open then you will have more fun – but it will pay you in the long-run to keep your cards closer to chest – this doesn’t mean don’t share stuff – it just means don’t do it so publicly.

I could not find one of these for love or money but would deffo have had a ride. MIght have saved me £600!

I am a 29″ inside leg on a medium Whyte at 5’9″ tall. the seattube and cranks are OK, but on climbs it could be a bit longer in headtube.

whatever bike you get I would go for a Small with the stem adjested to suit.

There’s not one standout trail there that’s better than a lot of well known trails but I’m never happier than when I’m on the bike over there.

and then I wondered… is that blissfulness down to trails or a consequence of er other activities?

oldfart – they are just rude people, whether they are roadies or MTB is irrelevant, being a cock transcends how thick your tyres are.

    Just as a self-indulgent update.

i accepted the post 😆 and have since been working out how local cheeky can have some features built in.

However, this week I actually had to do something – a local footpath which crosses a river had an anti-cycle barrier at one end which prevented some kids cycling from one village to my village school. Our county council established that the barrier had not been built by the landowner and did qwe object to its removal? Of course not, and even the moany old nimby councillors didnt – because they see cheeky > safer to road. Now the PC will ask for permissive bike use on this path.

Boring? Maybe, however, I suggest that at a (sensible) local level the UK is pro-bike and it is worth getting off your arse and getting involved at a local level.

at the risk of being boring/repetitive.

I have ridden the trail in question a couple of times in the last week or so, and it is clear (thx to freer1denick) – but the bit where it had been trashed/logged is definitely NOT on Hurtwood land. This is the way it is over that bit of Surrey Hills so pls can we be clear about whose land we are on in future? If we are not sure, best to check before posting pretty pls.

Mark (the Ranger)’s plea about contributions is now on all the car park noticeboards Ive been to recently and aimed at all Hurtwood users, not just MTB.

They have lost grants in the cuts and need more members. We are not in a minority wrt membership % most locals arent members either – but if you value the riding and havent already contributed then please consider making a donation.

I ride that stuff plus surrey Hills and love my Whyte 905.

As they are now over £1500 I would bloody well hope so. a 901 prob delivers the same smiles for les £££

UK trail hardtail is the niche you are looking for (i believe), 120mm fork, slackish head angle ~68 +/- and lots mud clearance.

Charge do a good one, Genesis Core ( get a basic one and it is much cheaper than mine) and I dare say others…

no doubt the first bit of your post is true – So if he suggested to Pete Kennaugh or Swifty that they are good, but would be even better if they got on the sauce – you would be Ok with that?

“I think you have to know something of the ins and outs of pro bike racing to get a feel for it really. To know what goes on for the 49 weeks of the year when the TdF isn’t on.”

I agree. But it’s worse than that with pro road racing cos once fans (who dont ride) get beyond the TdF stage, many of them start wanting Giros with 12 competed MTFs on 20% climbs while insisting the sport remain clean.

Millar, was to some extent a victim of the system, but he still had a choice, even if it was extremely limited, eg Bassons

mudshark “I like Wiggo too but didn’t realise he hadn’t given appropriate credit to his team for his 2009 performance.”

To me, this point of Millar’s is moot.

Wiggo ITT’d and wheelsucked his way to that position (and why not, God made him a time-trialler), I dont recall seeing monster efforts from the Garmin massive to keep him there.

On the other hand all road-racing is a team effort;)

I think he is more pissed that Wiggo left a team he has a stake in for mega-bucks – but at the same time cannot blame him.

(btw there is a book out now called Skys the Limit – it is all about how Sky was intended to be built around Cav, but it just didnt come off – so both Sky and Wiggins are opportunists)
