I’ve got MAxxis Aspens… they’re useless in the wet..
my Mud X’s are going on today.Yah lovely and fast on summer trails but some v sketchy moments for me on the wetter peatier trails on my namesake last time out so the ‘winter’ tyres are going on.
Panaracer fire xc or something like that.
winterfoldFree Member10pmix noone could find anything from your vids if they didnt already know where they were, you’ve edited them pretty good from that point.
You could do a better run thru WW though if you included the gully section some call Trench Warfare 🙂 best bit of the network along with the logrolls – but maybe you do and have left it out or chopped the edit up and I missed
I can’t believe people need help to find that stuff – so many riders must just cruise round eyes closed…
PS good call on Plastic Dreams – happy days 😉

Average Stw’er too fat too risk using proper rodie website! “
This.
Roady threads on here are not proper roady threads.
Roadies never ask each other about bikes or clothes or upgrades. Its a sure sign of being slow and not hard enough.
These are threads about road bikes by people too gay for MTBing and who dont like it anymore cos its no longer niche.
winterfoldFree MemberElfin – no offence but not liking compromise and not liking being told what to do are not ideal qualities for a freelance designer – at times these are great qualities in a designer but you need to have tenure – or be Neville Brody
My mid 20s self would be disgusted with how much of a sellout I am at 45 but mortgages do not pay themselves and sometimes philistines and morons are the only people with money. I reconcile it by kidding myself that if I know it is a sellout job but I am aware and morally superior then it’s not a proper sellout :-~
Crikey Kate Winslet – you definitely would I think the Harvey jack off story is just about to come out…
winterfoldFree MemberI havent read this all the post so apologies if this is repetition…
You can look at this one of two ways; jobs are being cut, economy’s in this shite, freelance daily rates seem high compared to pro rata daily salaries, etc OR companies still need those skills but only on certain days, if freelance is limited company then no NI with no IR35 comeback, freelances come in and do the job without whinging, no HR/PC bollox, if they **** up can get rid there and then.
Depending on which of those half full/half empty views of the world you take, therein lies your answer.
I had the choice made for me, but havent looked back, rates for what I do have hardly moved on from 2001, but that is because the rest of world is catching up with us. I keep my rate lowish, on the basis it makes finding work much easier and there is an understanding that if the deadline is such that it doesnt matter if I work this avo or this evening, then I’m on the trails.
If companies doent let you decide when and how you work then you are effectively an employee and the IR will get them. Therefore it is to their advantage that I am bombing down Charly Bronson when the 9-5ers are in the office 🙂
Getting over the stressy will I have work next quarter/year takes a while though.
Oh – and are you any good and can take feedback? If you are a good designer who can take feedback without chucking your toys out then you will get work, there just aren’t enough about.
Good luck… whichever path you choose.
winterfoldFree MemberWith the benefit of hindsight I am now possibly annoyed I gave this a serious answer
OP redeem yourself
else
🙁
winterfoldFree Membernjee – my scepticometer kicked in but I can avg 22-23 over 13 miles on my steel bike coming back from Guildford Stn down the A283. That feels like a full 10 effort though and not something I would do every day.
So if it’s like that – why not?
He should still do some racing or TTs though 😉
winterfoldFree MemberI think that’s quite high. Typical track is mid-high 80s” so something like 48:16 or 49:15 – are you riding as fast as you would on the track? I doubt it.
Most people who ride singlespeed/fixed in the winter do it to keep their cadence up and get a nice smooth peddling action, be kind to your knees (particularly in the cold) and develop a nice fluid style so you can sneer at obvious MTB peddle-mashers when you are commuting.
winterfoldFree Memberpractice – a bunch of lawyers
practise = lame
sessioning a feature/section/trail = rad to the power gnarr😉
I ‘practise’ my favourite bits of trail in the way the first beer or glass of nice red is ‘practise’ for the next one.
Gary Player said it best ‘the more I practise the luckier I get’ and MTB is the new golf after all…
winterfoldFree MemberCynic-al was in the lead but Tops 5 shiteometer wins hands down.
It really doesn’t matter – it’s bike riding not **** Strictly – whatever is warmest and you find most comfortable.
I wear padded baggies over waterproof tights or gore long trousers ( can be 3/4s) with padded endura boxers. Either way the old chap is nice and snug, with no chance of upsetting anyone with the Linford effect 😉

winterfoldFree MemberIt’s disgraceful that someone so ready to give out a lecture on the rules can make such a beginnerish mistake. And those pedals.
RealMan – pls sell your road bikes.
winterfoldFree MemberMy strongest stance is leading with my left foot. I don’t know if that means my left or right foot is strongest but I definitely can drive out of a right handed berm better and more powerfully.
I’m thinking of trails where I’m not pedalling.
I definitely have a better side just like waveriding or well anything…
Presumably I’m thinking wrong :-p
winterfoldFree MemberOn the phone so can’t edit the bottom of rambling posts.
The skill I don’t have which I wish I did is instinctively knowing how far a given speed carries you through the air.
And being able to wheely for miles rather than yards 🙁
winterfoldFree MemberGW – Member
Left foot forward is regular, right foot forward is goofy
Yeah, on a board it might be, but lets stick to bikes please
POSTED 9 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POSTThe same principle applies. I am goofy and when I’m off the saddle ‘surfing’ singletrack I always lead with my goofy foot so right hand turns are far more instinctive because I have more power and drive with my left foot on the outside.
I am a longtime roadie and windsurfer who got into MTB because I got fed up with windsurfing depending on the British weather – I get the same thrill from MTB as I got from windsurfing it is much more like it than riding a road bike (except when descending perfectly surfaced French switchbacks at 60/70kmh).
So goofy/regular definitely applies IMO.
winterfoldFree Memberlots of good tips which I will just reiterate
dont deflate tyres as they will protect your wheels from baggage handling ruffians, if unscientific paranoia dictates you must, deflate them 1 atmosphere, but no more
remove rear mech
fork spacing things or maxles
handlebars from stem, not stem from fork
pedals off
pray
winterfoldFree Membertheyre borked – its the cracking more than the gouge.
youve had very good miles so no worries
why are you using race tyres through the Winter? They are designed to grip and go fast not do tons of winter miles.
get some lithions or krylions for the Winter and save your nice tyres and a few quid
winterfoldFree MemberAs deadkenny says “. It’s a donation, not a permit.”
Last years £25 was the best £25 I spent.
I’ll donate more this year.
For landed gentry the Brays are pretty cool – definitely cooler than the new money who’ve acquired bits of the Hurtwood and will shit all over SE England given half a chance…
winterfoldFree MemberIt’s a brilliant city to visit – it’s unique – and so much more to it than getting stoned and hookers. You don’t have to have anything to do with that.
Another thing that’s great is the rowdy singing Dutchie bars in the Jordaan area (sort of WNW of the centre)
winterfoldFree MemberOi! Exposure provide proper jobs making stuff in a bit of Sussex where otherwise the choice is working in an antique shop or er well that’s it
I appreciate not everyone has the money to buy their lights at full retail or even seconds from them direct and if that’s the case then fine – but if you can afford them…
winterfoldFree MemberThe museum with all the Rembrandts in
Touristy canal cruise
Anne Frank ( how did they get away with it for so long? )
Vondel Park – much better in summer
Even though you said not find a tardis and travel back to early 90s Ma22o :):):)
winterfoldFree MemberExcellent rant
Mostly reasonable then superb full caps explosion before returning to reason
Could only be improved by use of a few smilies, and the word ‘nipple’.
More seriously good luck sorting it out, you would hope they will stand behind a £2k+ frame.
That the design has changed says a lot IMO

I find MTB often hurts my knees but road biking doesn’t. I often wondered if this is saddle height?
POSTED 6 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POSTYep – hip for me though – not so bad that can be arsed to **** about with my saddle though.
Age comes into this – how old are the guys grinding a big gear up steep climbs who say it’s fine?
Cue: I’m 50, 63, 97 etc 🙂
Fixed is definitely hard on your knees, especially with a big gear
This post is (Opinion based on experience with zero medical qualification – like all good Interweb medical advice should be)
winterfoldFree MemberDid Pitch and Winterfold today saw no riders on Pitch and a handful on Winterfold.
It was local traffic on Winterfold though – I bet they all did the new F****er gap.
winterfoldFree MemberGood thread this.
On my tod offroad 500 lumens on a helmet light is loads and my eyesight is not great. I don’t want to see as much as I do in the day – night riding IMO is a different vibe.
But… If you ride in a group then your shadow becomes an issue so you need more power even if you don’t want it else you are just looking at your own dark outline.
On the road in Winter – we all have big lights on full chat – if for no other reason than it completely freaks out cars who think it’s a combine or tank squadron 🙂
winterfoldFree MemberLooks like the importer got banned again today
Got to love that level of being true to yourself and not sucking up to the consensus
I guess lurkers on this forum who think lots of the most vociferous posters are bellends is a lot of bikes – hopefully more than will be sold by sucking up to them…
Jedi – I can see what you mean – does the way suspension pivots and linkages are laid out make a big difference – compared to geometry?
winterfoldFree MemberThin steel tubes look cool and are fast – just takes a bit longer to get there 🙂
Arse luxury makes up for the lack of acceleration
I love my old steely – just make sure you grease your seatpost once in a while if you’re using ally
winterfoldFree MemberIf you like the way old steel bikes look that Genesis is a good choice – nice
I fecked around for ages building up an old 531 bike – only cost £80 cash – but if I charged my time at my hourly rate £££
Boardmans are great fast light vfm but lack panache even though the man himself had loads
winterfoldFree MemberNice to see the club whip round/donation for the reggae reggae sauce demo gets a mention.
That should give us some positive PR.
On balance though I’d rather we’d made the donation before as baksheesh to keep it open 🙂
Teamhurtmore – glad to see you’re getting it – the genuinely curious and adventurous will be rewarded the lazy are quite happy with what they already know – if we keep quiet some trails everyone is happy and noond loses out.
It’s a perfect example of Rumsfeldian logic 🙂
winterfoldFree Memberits an arms race like cupra said
500 is fine for me on my lid when Im on my own – but when all your mates have 6 packs and Toros etc you cant see a thing in your shadow – which means you have to let them by – which is just not on
winterfoldFree Membermy frame is sitting in GRF’s warehouse while I work out a suitable lie to avoid the wrath of mrs winterfold
posts like these make it more likely I will just take the bollocking
what fork you got in yours nimo?
winterfoldFree MemberMy bro in law owns a shop which deals Spec and I was considering a top level rockhopper at trade vs a whyte 905 from lbs with £300 off cos it was end of line 2010.
Tried both – went with the Whyte 905 ( same frame as 901 ) even though it was more and broinlaw wanted the sales volume.
I think they are different enough bikes that even an MTB novice like me can tell ( although I’ve ridden road bikes for yonks so understand geometry) – the Whyte is more laid back and can handle all the aggro I am going to put it through in Surrey Hills. I felt the Spec, while still a nice bike, just wasn’t as versatile in the rougher stuff.
And the Whyte was obviously cooler 🙂 it also had a much better fork – as far as I could tell – that is the bit I still dong quite understand as roady but for sure you can feel the difference between a £400 fork and one that is cheaper
Hope that helps – in time honoured forum tradition I recommend what I bought 🙂
winterfoldFree MemberRiding that footpath does cause issues and there is no reason to ride it so if you see someone doing it politely ask them not to.
If they ignore you not much you can do about it – except maybe start a “bellends WTF?! 👿 “Name and shame thread…
winterfoldFree Memberyes – everytime someone 40+ sees my AM41s
am starting to understand just how much you need to judge people you have never met and dont know to ‘fit in’ on this forum…
winterfoldFree Member‘njee20’ – ironic humour maybe? Can a ‘nutter’ ask if njee20 is on your birth certificate?
It is too far from the pub and cheesestraws for overcrowding to be an issue.

FWIW, I personally think the trails on W1nterf0ld are much worse than those on Pitch these days, and especially Holmbury, as the trails on w1nterf0ld are really cut up.
