    Another BIG +1

Definitely worth taking some time afters to put into practise what you learned your first go. It took me a while to do on my own what I was doing with Tony. Some of what he says might not make sense for a few months afterwards either, but then it clicks.

He is great at aftercare and emailing you to make sure you are getting out and doing things.

Hopefully going back when I fixed following injury (from car, not bike…)

I’m relatively new to MTB and have just put a new chain on ( before cassette and chainset looked too worn ) and under load it feels like I have multiple stiff links ie sticky/snatching

I’ve checked the chain for stiff links cleaned degreased etc and it is still happening.

The jockey wheels being worn sounds very plausible – do they wear relatively quicker on MTB? Its not something I’ve had a problem with my road bike

    So, that’s what it is.

I love Interwebs as so many expert share their knowledge and experiences…

It’s the next one along heading E from the one by Flytipper.

CP6 too? Crikey! How weird do we look to them – guaranteed shag and we’d rather go off on our bikes.

I spent some time in the Windy Willows area today, but I just hadn’t realised it was more deciduous than evergreen

I fell off several times – there was more grip on the logrolls.

Headed West and it was much grippier and quite a bit of snagging in cars going on too.

It was still light so i couldnt ascertain the light situation. But the doors were closed. Im an old fart these days anyway and would rather literally ride my bike.

Local Rider has since informed me there were a couple at it with the door open in the lay-by at the top of Barrys. Now that’s proper exhibitionism.

What next? I wonder if the guys who dress up as Orcs and Beowulf etc should be introduced to them? That would be worth taking a picture…

I’m with epicyclo – long sleeve merino top with zip neck and gilet covers a lot of conditions.

if it’s really miserable then long sleeve base and a breathable waxed jacket I got from Scats. I think it’s a shooting jacket as it is loose on the shoulders but is a decent cut for biking otherwise. £50 🙂

If I had 150 quid I would get the Endura soft-shell one which does everything and is close fitting enough for roadying.

    I’ve got this coming up.

I looked at the cane creek thing and it seemed to come up about the same ££ as Hope – given hopes rep for longevity and willingness to stand behind their product and the money staying in the UK seems an easy enough choice – if I think about it too much it’s a lot for a headset but it’s cheaper than a new fork…

Initially I will be using my nominally 120mm* Rebas on it – I emailed Transition and the reply was ‘Yah dude that fork will be fine – slack head angles are overrated anyways – enjoy’

There may have been a ‘for your lame fat middleaged Surrey hills ass’ implicit in that reply 🙂 but I found it refreshing. Especially as everyone else had said ‘ you need a £££ revelation/talas ‘.

*(although I’ve measured travel on them and I am confident I get 130mm)

    Now that’s a proper roady thread 🙂

Commuter asks reasonable question and gets more sport science than will fit in Bjarne Riis ‘majic juice’ bottle.

As Dan says while Graeme/GRF may oome across as a bellend (or antiPC legend depending on POV) online, in the real world he is a genuine helpful guy who would not want you to buy the wrong bike/frame for you so I would get in touch with Surf Sales and see what he can sort out with your nearest dealer.

As a wheels on the ground midget he is innately suspiscous of bikes that weigh more than he does or with fork travel longer than his inside leg measurement so he would not want someone to buy more bike than they need then slag it off to their mates/online/etc

Ooh thats the colour mine is, it looks much better than the pix on the website. And my hunch all black on the components and finishing kit looks correct. I really must stop working and get it sent and built.

burt – what fork you using?

tamedearth – you’re round Fernhurst way arent you? It’s not clear to me what your proposition is, but it seems interesting. Can you explain?

‘derekrides’ that’s where my bro lives – drop us a line if you’re heading over.

Maybe it’s just me but I find ‘stickman’ type stuff all part of the fun.

Where I ride ( Surrey Hills ) the various Rangers are pretty tolerant – but may not appear so to angry moaning red socks and similar. Their job is about compromise.

But once a dodgy trail can no longer be ignored they deal with it properly. At least they understand us well enough to know a pile of sticks or even a trunk does **** all and just becomes a feature.

And there I was thinking how great my MTB had been over it’s first 12 months.

Broke the chain and a set of rear pads but that’s it.

Haven’t touched the front mech once and it’s only a Deore and keeps working even when completely covered in Wealden clay.

My most recent road bike (campag admittedly) has had one set of cables in 3 years and a new set of tyres.

I ride loads, bikes are great etc

On the other hand they cost the same ~ 1500 as the old mans 125 ninja electric start automatic 300 mpg scooter 🙄

Youll get over it, we all go through periods of low motivation. I know I do, (although more with windsurfing than biking as it can be a fickle pita) but every year I take a bit of time off the bike at some point because of tiredness or overdoing it or just meh…

But whatever happens – don’t sell your bike – one day you will want to ride and it won’t be there and a new one will cost 4x what you sold the old one for…

I was faffing with dropping then putting it back up then decided to leave it down and just be slow and chilled about going uphill and not bother if I was first or last in my group uphill if I was able to cane it on the fun bits.

If I want to go up hills fast then I’ll get the road bike out.

    That said, reverbs look ace

My daughter had a balance bike, hated stabilisers stopped riding then one day just got on and road because she felt like it.

I learned – don’t be pushy with your kids.

And then forgot it, hassled her into doing the biggest bombhole on Winterfold ( twice ) and have not been up there with her since – even though she did it no bother 🙁

I am reminded of what I learned – don’t be pushy with your kids.

Quite a lot of no pump etc fail in this thread but I always ask, and whenever I have a flat or whatever it always seems like loads of other riders regardless of tribe check you are ok.

Giving someone an inner tube on a ‘pay it on’ basis is one of lifes finer pleasures.

The Endura soft-shell one (Stealth) looks like convincing as a roadie jacket. If that’s what you’ve got you will be fine.

As others have said it needs to be properly cold for a full on roadie winter jacket 5C or less with mine.

A decent long sleeve jersey and gilet is fine above that – or LS and shell if it’s raining.

Hands, feet and knees are where you will feel the cold first though…

I agree njee that one ( with a RH berm nr the start and a great bombhole 1/2 way? ) was pretty soggy a few weeks ago and it hadn’t rained much then.

I think the soil there is much peatier and that is a problem for drainage.

Eg Bronson and Ewok Village were both lovely on the same ride.

If you do that then you’re kind of going backwards on the Pitch trails.

Instead go to car park 2 ( a bit west of the pub) then take the fire road that heads S up the hill. There are a few turns but there are trails running off all of them. Keep your eyes open and you will see trail beginnings and ends.

Or get a map from pedal and spoke.

the Campag thumb shifter is so vastly superior to Shimano, paricularly for the upshift when hooning it on the drops that you do wonder how people who moan about it hold their bars?

WTF??!! Bicycle gearing is a marvel of mechanical engineering and efficiency – why not make use of it?

(Unless – fashion or you are a charitable sort who like young people laughing at them)

Remember 2 save money for your SKINNY jeans, spooky dokies and pisspot… 😯

Cue all the maintenance, cadence and other BS arguments used by fakeenger wannabes :-p

    OP

Do you need a handlebar light for MTB as well?

If so get a Toro and use it on low for road riding. Well, that’s what exposure recommended to me as the beam pattern on the Strada is not ideal for offroad.

I use a joystick for road riding – don’t recall being flashed and I live right out in the sticks. It seems an ideal amount of light pattern small etc

Riding in a bunch of 4+ with everyone with a decent light on is quite amusing when we come across a car – they always pull over and stop – it either looks like a combine or a bunch of lamping nutters.

(We only see a couple of cars on an evening ride so it’s not causing a problem if it were busier it might come across as leery anarcho biker nonsense.
