If you are interested in the role of carbohydrate and your overall health read this The Diet Delusion

It goes into the papers and research that back up the currently diet advice given in the Western World.

Carbs are big business and a lot of people want to keep it that way. Just look at the breakfast cereal in a supermarket, the profit margin on that stuff puts Oakley to shame!

For the vast majority you get all the carbohydrate you need from fresh veg and low GI fruit. Pasta, bread, cereal etc is not necessary.

Yes insulin in a non-diabetic will cope with the sugar but so will your liver if you drink alcohol in excess. No-one can argue drinking in excess is good for you and eventually your liver “breaks”, same as a pancreas can if you eat a lot of unnecessary carb.

Come the low carb revolution brothers!

    iDave is right.

Low carb is the way to go.

If you read up on insulin response to glucose and how it causes fat to accumulate then it all makes sense. Tie it into watching the GI of food then weight loss is easy.

My prediction is that in 5 – 10 years time the medical profession will finally admit they were wrong and stop telling fat people to eat diets high in carbohydrate. You heard it here first.

I agree that there is no real difference between HDMI cables apart from build quality.

I tend to buy Belkin “Pure” cables, you can get them for less than a tenner and they are well made to take my ham fisted abuse.

Nah mate. I’m a North Durham, “Chesta” lad originally.

Met him once. He’s a decent guy.

He used to be a National level gymnast so he should have good balance and co-ordination. Although I;m not sure the BBC insurance would let him do.

I would recommend a Garmin Edge but they are expensive.

A dedicated GPS receiver is generally way better than any phones GPS.

I haven’t used one of these but I do have a GPS logger made by the same company and it is very well made and reliable.

    Holux Sport GPS

You can get them for about £50 if you are willing to wait for it to come from Taiwan.

Of dubious worth considering the effort expended.

I needed a 2nd one, so I got a cheap chinese one of ebay.

I wasn’t expecting much, but for the money it has been superb.

The fittings are not as good as qualtity as the branded units but you pays your money….

    I had at 21.

    Awful.

The best tip I can give you is drink loads of water, seems to keep the itching down and helps your skin so less chance of scarring.

I used to do some work at a place on the banks of Loch Goil.

There was a whole family of them there. Not that shy, would often be seen on the rocks by the water.

Apparently they came from escapees from a local mink farm. Cause a few problems with the local wildlife I believe.

The surveyor has made it a requirement for my mortgage.

I have a local company with a decent reputation, they make a charge for the survey, which is refunded if work is carried out. Feel a lot happier with that.

The estate agents recommended them, they frequently report back there are no problems.

Hopefully, all is fine, I would just like to get the purchase over.

I agree, he has done a full survey and come back with “get another surveyor”.

I have never done a full survey before, only did it because there as a deal from the bank, I’m a bit disappointed.

Saying that, if you’ve lost 10kg and you’ve got more to lose, then Im assuming you’re not the sort of person who rides their bike fast

Put on about 10kg with a job change. Not riding enough.
Would like to lose about another 5 – 10kg.

Not massively fast on a bike not a racer by any means but can happily cover 70 miles on the road bike and certainly quicker than an “average” fatty. Never been a good climber even when slimmer, more rugby player than peloton!

    Kevevs –

If I was sat on my arse all day and driving, with my diet I would be a different shape I reckon.

There is no doubt that exercise helps keep weight down, but I really believe that the way your body deals with glucose and your insulin resistance plays a massive part. Kev you probably wouldn’t put that much weight on compared to others if you got less exercise. We all know people who never seem to put on weight no matter what they eat and others who eat “well” and exercise but still get fat. Also, why do you put on weight as you get middle aged despite reducing calorie intake and getting plenty of exercise?

Are you a cyclist? If so, then I cant imagine reducing carbs would be good for you. What are you going to use for energy?

This is not correct. Your body will burn body fat directly in the absence of carbs.

I realise that this can be quite an emotive issue, as it basically recommends the opposite of what the majority of medics would recommend.

I read this (and other stuff) The Diet Delusionand have come to the conclusion that I do not need to eat any significant quantity of starchy carb. I eat loads of veg, meat, fish, eggs and in 3 weeks I have lost 10kg. This is despite having to work away for most of that period and not getting my regular bike rides.
Don’t feel hungry but I really miss the beer and steak sandwiches!

However, the weight loss could simply be from cutting out the beer!

Get a Map doesn’t let you transfer the map to a Garmin, just the route.

There is loads of free software that lets you transfer routes.

I have spent a fortune on OS products over the years and do not feel guilt in using Mobile Atlas Creator for my garmin.

OS is a Government trading fund.
It is not a private business but has a lot of self determination. It is very similar to the UK Hydrographic Office.

Both organisations are very risk adverse and totally stuck in the past. However both produce absolutely outstanding products.

It’s such a shame, I for one would happily pay a £10 – £15 annual subscription for full access to the OS50k and 25k including a transfer/download facility.

They will still have a very similar market for the paper products, I use both as a large paper map is still more useful for a lot of things than a smaller electronic version.

I think Steiner offer some excellent value. Not cheap but excellent quality.

I think I agree with what Matt said above, basically if you want a good clear, sharp image you need a lot of light, so the bigger the objective lens the better. If you can put up with the weight and size then go for 7×50.
Basically most people look at the magnification but the objective lens is more important. As the Yanks say “There is no substitute for cubic inches”.

Does the 605 work with Garmin Custom Maps?

If it does google “Mobile Atlas Creator v1.8” and you can transfer all sorts of mapping data to your GPS. You want v1.8 not the latest versions.

I use it with a Etrex 20 and it’s brilliant.

I suffered from a “habitual” dislocation of my left shoulder for about 15 years.

I must of dislocated 20 times at least.

When I first did it it would reduce itself if I just lay face down on a table or similar with my arm dangling. However, it got worse and then I needed to attend A&E to have it reduced.

I then got the surgery done and it has been fine since, I don’t have the full range of movement but I didn’t before as my shoulder could just drop out and rotated backwards!

I would strongly recommend the surgery, if it dislocates when your in a remote location and doesn’t reduce then you could be in trouble.

I used to use something similar to this which helped.

My mate has a Howdens account so I will check any quote off the builder with him – He’s in Lancs and I’m in Kent otherwise he would be doing the work.

Peter – Looks like you did a cracking job there. Do you know what brand of units you got off ABC Magnum? I’ll see if I can get a more local supplier.

Differential gps is still used and the principles haven’t changed.

What is really clever is using post processing for applying corrections.

Basically, you can collect positional info and correct it back at the office when processing it. The corrections required are known for the exact time and location.

If your sad and really care Trimble give some excellent tutorials on their site. Trimble

Just had a offer accepted on a house at about 9% less than asking. However, it had just been reduced and the offer was 15% less than the original.
This was in the SE, 50 minutes from London. Although we were cash buyers and the house was empty, so it should be quick and easy for everyone.

Remember a house is only worth want someone is willing to pay for it.

    The MOT is obviously standard.

So about £200 for isn’t bad for a full service. A big chunk of that would be just for the oil.

    Seems about standard.
